Hola, so we have gone off our planned course of heading to Acapulco since we had not heard great things about it and going to Tequila was just way more cooler. After a pit stop in Mexico city, thankfully only 12 hours in the smelliest room, we headed to Gaudalajara. This is Mexico's second largest city but you wouldnt know it looking at it. There are no big high rises and people are more chilled out. They have some fantastic old buildings. One thing we noticed is there are Chinese buffet restaurants everywhwere. They were always full of locals and we were craving a change from Mexican so we had to try it. The food was amazing and Daz was very happy to get some vegies. We are still a little confused as to whether the ... read more

We bought our glasses this morning and will pick them up tomorrow before leaving for Ajijic.... We next walked to the old bus station in the middle of the city to get a bus to Amatitan, a tequila town on the way to Tequila. It took us awhile to find the station, but when we did, we were told there was a bus in about 15 minutes....in Mexican second class bus time, it was 30 minutes and a change of busses half way through the wait. It took the bus over an hour to just get out of the city, and another hour to get to Amatitan.... only the last 15 minutes were pretty: agave fields and forested mountains. The little town was hot and deserted....and while the UNESCO listed plaza was interesting, the church was ... read more

We had to move from our lovely Casa Colorin yesterday...they are normally booked out 3 months, so we were lucky to get any time there... We are now staying in small hotel about half way between the house and the central plaza...it's quiet and friendly, but very basic...we have a two room suite with a small patio...flat screen TV with cable (so we've seen a bit of the Olympics), and breakfast on weekday mornings... Today we walked to the center of the city and took a public bus to the village of Tonala, which has a giant craft market on Sundays... there were few interesting booths among the thousands we passed...most of the good stuff is too big or heavy to carry home: glass, pottery, wood... Many of the booths sold garish/cutsey stuff, but we found ... read more

If it's true that walking on uneven surfaces is good for your brain synapses, then jogging here must have added years to my mental acuity! Besides the usual urban dangers of uneven pavement and dog poop, I've had dodge many other obstacles. The sidewalks can change from cement to tile to stone to dirt all in one short block. Each household or business constructs and maintains their bit of pavement. Some of the tilework is slippery, especially when freshly washed. There are occasionally holes deep enough to break one's leg...Add to this mix fallen oranges and the occasional business that sticks out into the sidewalk! The streets are better, but there one finds cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles, all of which have the right of way. Fortunately, all the streets are one way except for the ... read more

We got a fairly good night's sleep (but we did change out the fleece sheet for a regular one this morning...! A bit too cozy..) and woke refreshed this morning. I went for run after coffee and saw a few other joggers, but they were all male... We had an omelet made from ingredients I picked up at the street market yesterday, along with fresh papaya and avocados...and then we walked about 3 miles to the old historic district, through streets lined with interesting one and two story buildings of all colors and kinds. We got to what we thought was the main cathedral and went inside to look and rest...as we read the guide book, nothing inside matched and we realized we were not where we thought we were....another 5-6 blocks to go! Once arrived ... read more

We arrived at the house we've rented for a few days by taxi in the dark, around 6:30am...the driver had a hard time finding the tiny street. The housekeeper hadn't arrived yet to let us in, so we watched the dawn arrive and were greeted by several hummingbirds who appear to hang out around the front door. After the housekeeper arrived and gave us a quick tour, we climbed into bed and slept as the sun streamed through the amazing glass windows....the house is beautiful, with much colored glass, bright paint, and ceramics. The garden is tropical and shaded, and there's a sunny rooftop area too. I love how it smells here: like the best spring day.... I've made coffee...and the hammock beckons...Bill's still asleep, but a new place always feels like Christmas morning to me...so ... read more

Thursday, January 30 The Lake Chapala Society had a bus going to the Guadalajara Zoo today on which we had booked seats. It was a large tourist bus with very comfortable seats but with the very long wheel base of the bus we could really feel the side to side roll on the highways. Guadalajara has very soft soil which results in a sinking of the pavement here and there, resulting in a motion that resembles a boat in rolling seas. A long trip would definitely required sea sickness pills. The Guadalajara Zoo is the largest in Latin America and well worth a visit. It would take days to really see and experience the whole place. Since we were only spending one day there we had to pick and choose. The entrance has a huge waterfall ... read more

2013, unlucky for some... but not for US! The title of this journal is was the first thing Max said to me this year before giving me a confident new year kiss, and so far it has been true, apart from losing the first detailed written two months of our travels! So I am afraid my story starts half way through until I can recount some of the previous events, but with the amount of tequila that was drunk the hand written book was supposed to be my saving grace, funny being a child of technology I preferred to use the perishable pen and paper instead of limitless indestructible cyber storage! But there are many lessons like these learned along the way. Certainly building up my tolerance against sentimentality of material possessions. Hopefully I will be ... read more

Dont let the title fool you...for the birthplace of mariachi and one of the only 4 states legally allowed to produce tequila in Mexico I have seen very little tequila and no mariachi at all. A bit disapointing but maybe its because Ive been pretty lazy in Guadalajara. I got here from Veracruz after taking a cheap flight with Vivaaerobus (if you come to Mexico and want internal flights this airline usually has very cheap flights, even cheaper than the bus in some cases, though obviously considerably worse for the environment). Another tip if you come to Guadalajara and dont want to use the taxi monopoly the government has set up at the airport (300 pesos into town) is to turn right out of terminal one and follow the signs for a bus to terminal terreste. ... read more

Und ZACK - da bin ich nach 2 Jahren wieder in Guadalajara, Mexico! Dort wo ich 2010 den groessten Spass meines Lebens hatte! Liebe Menschen, tolle Partys, Sonnenschein und Palmen - was will man mehr?!
