OK, maybe this seems totally normal to you but... I kept seeing folks selling these paper-looking sheets with holes cut in them but didn't really know what they were. Sandra informed me that they are "snacks" that you put chile and lime on and then eat. But that isn't the creepy part. The "holes" were Catholic Church communion wafers. The Church then sells the remaining sheets via folks hawking all kinds of things at city intersections. Is that a little weird or is it just me? To think about it another way, one centimeter inside or outside the cutting circles is the difference between being the blessed body of Christ or a roadside snack. In a sense we are like those wafer sheets. Although all created in the image of God, some are destined for noble ... read more

A thought for Independence Day. As I mentioned in my last blog, the woman who was going to rent us a house decided not only not to rent it to us unless we paid her more money but then also to not return our deposit when we refused the higher price. The problem is, she can do just that because the wheels of Mexican justice turn so slow (if at all) that she knows I can't fight her. Likewise, anyone who has driven a car in Latin America can testify how chaotic the driving is. And why not drive like a maniac when two dollars can buy off nearly any police officer? Society will fall to the level the law permits and here the lack of law permits quite a lot. Our society was founded on ... read more

So we roll into Guadalajara... Our accommodations have been taken care of long ago and a deposit paid. Well, the woman renting the house asked for more money (despite our written contract!) and then decided she wasn't going to rent us the place when we didn't pay the higher amount. Nice. (See my next post about the rule of law) Oh it wasn't just that, she also decided not to give us our deposit back. It was too late by that time to rent any other place Friday evening so we would have to wait for Saturday. On Saturday, after a fruitless search we finally found a place that was more expensive (read: not in our budget), was not as well located, and was smaller than the one we paid the deposit on (and so far ... read more

One ungodly early morning bus ride later and back to Guadalajara it was. The plan was to show Trevor my life for the past 5 weeks and hopefully introduce him to some of the wonderful people and places I had gotten to know. I also really, really wanted to share with him the fabulous nightclub scene I had spent so much time enjoying to my bad tequila lovin’ self. We also hoped to take a trip out to Tequila town and catch Mexico in the first World Cup Soccer match. It was a grand plan; one meticulously executed... well, except for when it wasn’t. Stumbling block numero uno: We Had No Where to Sleep. Neither of us realized that Guadalajara offered very little in the way of affordable places to sleep and as I had just ... read more

I have met my future latin lover. His name is Salvador, he’s 47, has 3 sons, divorced for 10 years, lives Mexico City, doesn’t speak English and managed to fall in love with me in 5 minutes. Best story ever: I went to the nearby town of Tlaquepaque, which is known for it’s charm and upscale artisan galleries, to explore for an afternoon by myself. After watching mariachis in the plaza for an hour, I wandered off in search of something refreshing, and found myself at a cart which sells snow cone ice covered in lime juice and sugar. Salvador was standing there with one of his many sons, who had ordered something interesting that I was curious about. I asked them what it was, they insisted I try it, it was nasty, I made a ... read more

Experiences to add to my life repertoire and/or highlights of the last two weeks: I met Jack Daniels; but we've decided it's not going to work out. I have learned that it only takes four shots of tequila to knock me down. It's an improvement of sorts - in weeks one and two of being here, it only took three. Also, much like salsa, I have learned that tequila goes well with anything (soda, orange juice, cranberry juice, etc). No one has ever told me this; I feel like I've been misguided for a significant portion of my adult years. I turned 27; officially my late twenties!! Oooh myyy goddd! I have conquered my fear of motorcycles and speed! Joshua and I rode out to a nearby town and reached speeds of 170km on the ... read more

1. Tacos can be eaten for breakfast, and definitely are. There is a line up at every street taco cart I pass when I walk to school at 8:30am. And there are dozens of different kinds: frijoles, papas, beef, chicken, tongue, throat... (--- definite EWW for those last two!) 2. Siestas are real and practiced every day in my house, possibly because we eat so much food. 3. There is ALWAYS a fiesta somewhere! 4. Tequila is glorious. Especially when mixed with a grapefruit flavoured pop to make a "paloma" and really is enjoyed in copious amounts. The cheapest bottle we could find cost 24 pesos and tasted a little like battery acid, but was still definitely drinkable. 5. I've yet to see a donkey or wear a sombrero. 6. Salsa goes on everything. Literally, except ... read more

"Um, thank you senor ... Where is Walmart?" "Cuatro o cinco blocks that way." (Points straight down the road) "That way? Muchas gracias!" And so I walk. For four or five blocks that way. I am lost. For hours. It's 36 degrees outside. I don't have sunscreen. Not smart Kristena. I am not happy. Not even a little bit. My mission was to find a Walmart because I am having some sort of reaction to my fancy smancy Lancome face cream and just want to go with something simple that I know. Walmart seems logical. I had gone there with Humberto and Ale a few days before to buy groceries. It's near, I know it is. I can do it. I set out. It's probably only a 30 minute walk I think. Somehow I get lost, ... read more
