"The Destination matters less than the Journey!" "C'est pas tant la destination que le parcours qui compte!" This being said, our Ajijic destination makes us revisit that statement for a little while... Very nice break! We enjoyed a little Mexican immersion at the local Chapala market. To prevent any swine contamination, we made sure to absorb the right amount of liquid as prescribed by DrScotch. No problema... pas encore. Nous avons ... read more

Well, here we are in Ajijic (pronounce “Hahihic”), at Luc & France’s, our most southern destination (this time…). Ajijic is a small town along lake Chapala, south east of Guadalajara, where Luc retired a few years ago with France. The location, on mountain side, with a stunning view of the lake and the Mount Garcia, “The Sleeping Giant”, is simply superb. We will abuse their hospitality a few more days then back on the saddle riding north-east for a change. Our next destination: New Orleans. After which, the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky, then home, first stop Toronto, then Quebec and Lac Bowker. Nous avons atteint notre destination la plus au sud, Ajijic (que l’on prononce “Hahihic”), une petite ville au sud de Guadalajara ou Luc et France apprecient une retraite sedentaire bien meritee. The day begins at 0642 when the alarm first goes off. It's quickly turned back off again and one of us drags ourself out of bed, searches for the keys, goes out, unlocks the gate to the girls' dorm (so that Antonia, the one high school student at the Hogar can leave for school which starts at 7am) knocks on the two dorm doors and shouts 'Buenos Dias' into each one, then blunders back into bed, resetting the alarm for 7 o'clock and goes back to sleep for 15 minutes! At 7 o'clock we both drag ourselves out of bed to go and get the girls up properly and start them doing their chores. If we're really lucky a few girls will already be up and ready when we come out of our room but it ... read more

Yes we are still alive and well! The number of Lattitude volunteers here in Mexico is now down from 8 to 4 since some went home last week. Lattitude are still keeping in touch with us really well to make sure we're healthy and give us the latest advice. So far they are still not advising us to go home but of course if we decide it would be better for us then they will support us on that. The other volunteers who have gone home were all working a lot closer to Mexico City where the risk was a lot higher. We just found out today that there are now about 15 confirmed cases of swine flu here in Jalisco, almost all of which are in Guadalajara and that they have decided to keep schools ... read more

Dearest Friends and Family, This is just a quick message to let anyone worrying back at home know that I'm fine, safe in Guadalajara (away from mexico city and other infected areas) and am sitting tight. Its been a pretty surreal week to be honest and its kind of left my head spinning at how fast its taken off. On friday I had no idea what was happening and by Monday you could see facemasks and things in Guadalajara. I was planning on traveling this week and next week but have put that off til things calm down. For now I'm just hanging around home, catching up on t.v. and staying away from crowds and pigs. :) From what mum and dad have been telling me, the Aus media is going pretty nuts over there, but ... read more

Hello Again, Thought I'd put some photos up to show you the lighter side of the swine flu! The kids were excited to have face masks, even though they're barely wearing them buuuuuut never mind! Its not so important unless you're out in the street and since they never wash their hands and are permanantly very close together anyway, I dont think they'll really make any difference!! ... read more

Hey everyone!! Just thought I'd give you a little update on how this whole swine flu thing is going for the country of origin! I hope no-ones worrying about it too much, the situation isnt quite as bad as the UK news seems to be making out. All of the schools in Jalisco state have been closed which means that the children have nothing to do all afternoon. They are all suspended until May 6th so that might mean that a lot of them go back to their houses...if not we're gonna have a lot of extra work to do over the next week! As it is Jalisco hasnt actually had any confirmed cases of swine flu at all so it's purely precautionary. We've recieved messages from lattitude with advise from the embassy and council advising ... read more

Bienvenida a Guadalajara, home of Tequila, Mariachi and Chivas! We arrived here after a painful bus journey from Puerto Vallarta. The bus itself was very comfortable but the road was very twisty and we got stuck in traffic for a large part of the journey. After four feature length movies we were still nowhere near Guadalajara! After checking in late to our hotel we grabbed some food in the hotel where I ended up having a conversation with a drunk Chivas fan, who was in town to see the classico, Chivas Guadalajara v Club America (the biggest match in the Mexican football season). He was boasting about his teams unique recruitment policy (Chivas only play Mexican nationals). However, as I pointed out Athletic Bilbao also apply this policy (in this case only Basque players are eligible ... read more

First thing's first, Happy Easter Everyone!!! P.S. you may want to grab a snack, maybe a coffee, orange juice, I know I would. This entry is gonna be long and even split into two entries. Ahh, finally Vacation week, Semana Santa. Well to start of this blog lets go to the planning steps of this trip. So as I had started planning this trip it was originally supposed to be in Chiapas with Steve, Amy, and whoever else wanted to come. But that got changed because Amy couldn't go due to the danger in the area of southeastern Chiapas. So we changed it to a Tabasco journey. In Tabasco we were going to go to some caves, travel a little of the ocean, and visit one of the Guimond family members, a sister in law to ... read more

Hello there everyone! Sorry it's been so long since I last wrote - not feeling quite so angry about everything anymore!! SO!! after several weeks of saying to each other that we need to go away for a weekend, and stay away overnight we finally decided that it we would go and stay in Chapala, a small town about an hour south of Guadalajara on the shore of a massive lake! We had planned to leave the Hogar at about 10 o clock on Saturday morning so we would have the whole day to spend there and not have to come back too late on Sunday. Mexican time overruled us however and we didnt actually leave the Hogar until at least 11. We thought we'd just be getting the buses by ourselves but we were offered ... read more
