I am officially in Mexico!! It's a little bit strange and I was initially a lot of bit freaked out, but I made it!! In all the planning and anticipation for this trip, I don't think it ever really hit me what exactly I was about to do. That is, take on Guadalajara all by myself for 6 weeks!!! The moment of clarity came after clearing security in the airport ... all of the sudden I was fully aware that: A) I was in Mexico B) ALL BY MYSELF C) That my spanish is pretty crappy!!! I'm not going to lie ... it took a lot for me not to cry upon realizing this!! I beelined past all the "Senorita! Taxi?!!" and headed for the bathroom so I could regroup and come up with a game ... read more

“Las Sabilas” is the name of the hotel where we stayed in Guadalajara, which means “the succulents”. Garden designer Robert Clark won an award for his design of this place, which, true to the name, contains many different varieties of succulents (succulents you may be familiar with are jade plants and sansaveria that we have at home as house plants). There are also many vines covering the walls - some that bloom are varieties of thumbergina - like the brown-eyed susan hanging vines that we can grow in the summer - but many different colors and shapes that we have never seen before. Palms, bougainvillea, even a pomegranate tree. We stayed in the original building that was on the property when Robert took it over - 200 years old with foot-thick walls and 15 foot ... read more

We were able to take a first-class bus from Bucerias to Guadalajara, which was nice since it had air conditioning, a bathroom, a movie (in Spanish of course), and comfortable seats. We were even given a bag with a ham and cheese sandwich, a cookie, and a Pepsi. If we had known, we wouldn’t have packed our own sandwiches! Oh well. We had assigned seats, but when we got on the bus, there was a young man sleeping in one of our seats. Several people tried to wake him up, talking louder and louder to him and shaking him. The alcohol fumes rolling off him told the story - he was passed out cold and even shaking him couldn’t wake him up. We sat in the seats behind him, and luckily, nobody else wanted those seats, ... read more

We moved into our apartment at 1118 Juan Manuel on Friday the 29th. It's in Colonia Americana which is a great location within walking distance to Mercado Centenario, grocery stores, lavanderia, an organic bakery that sells home made veggie burgers and excellent Neveria's. and we're close to the bus stop. Our apartment is old and seems to have been abandoned for awhile but we are making the best of it. The guy we are renting it from, Jose, whom we found on Craigslist isn't the best landlord but he gave us some of his furniture so our apt is 1/3 furnished. Guadalajara has been an interesting last stop for us in Mexico. One of the best things about it (that we noticed right away) was the outness and openness of so many lesbians that we saw ... read more

As time aproaches for our return to the states, we return to Guadalajara for a few more days. We stay at the Hostel de Maria in the beautiful, central, old neighborhood of "Barrio de Mexicaltingo". This Neighborhood has beautiful old buildings and fountains that could just as easily be set in Buenos Aires or Havana. It is a magnet for filmmakers, it seems. We watch a documentary being made one evening. It is about the sculptor, Alejandro Colunga. We saw some of his work, the surrealistic chairs in the plaza in front of the Cultural Institute Cabanas. The next evening they are filming a scene for a scary movie, right up the street. The following morning they are filming right in front of our hostel. There is a fountain there, & the secne involves a street ... read more

¡Buenas noches!

Staying in the Historic Center of Guadalajara has really been a treat. There is always something going on. The Fiestas Octubre has events going on all over town & I was able to catch some wonderful music acts for free on the Plaza de la Liberation or at the stage set up behind the Teatro Degollado. Also wonderful street musicians. We visited the Instituto Cultural Cabanas, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for Orozco's Murals in the main chapel. They were stunning and worth the trip there, but we also got to see the Russian Imperial Crown Jewels (Fabrage Eggs & such) which were on display as part of their traveling exibit. Guadalajara has a sentimental soul & a hard side. Watching Mariachi musicians hustle for work from passing cars in front ... read more
