When we were approached on the street in Bangkok & asked to be english teachers, that really got me thinking. I knew at the time that I would not have any idea on how to begin to teach english as a foreign language, but I thought I might look into learning. As it turns out there are lots of schools offering certificates for teaching English. I decided to get my feet wet before diving in, so in Feb. 2008 I enrolled in as online class for teaching ESL (English as a Second Language). That class went pretty good, I finished it in Feb. 2009 & felt I learned some good information. The next step in the process was a surpervised teaching practice with real ESL students. That brought me to Guadalajara. One option that a lot ... read more

My first day in Guadalajara I found out about the Sunday recre-active event. The main street in town, which most of the time is FULL of traffic, is shut down to all motor vehicles, & open to bicycles, skaters, skateboarders, wheelchairs and walkers. There are volunteers monitoring the traffic at all the intersections and it is a big, citywide cycling party! Loads of fun with other groups sponsering events along the way.... read more

They say that getting sick or injured while traveling is inevitable, and I am not one to argue. I have seen the evidence of it. Consider please, kind reader, the following: 1.) While on a mission trip in Costa Rica, my mother fell in a pothole and had to have stiches above her eye. (Strike one against karma?) 2.) When I was a child the family decided to have a reunion in Florida. Being from Oklahoma, the beach was a huge deal. After driving the requisite 20 hours plus to arrive to the beach, I stepped out of the van and stubbed my toe so violently that it was left raw and unable to enter any kind of salty water for the entire week. 3.) For every time I have visited/lived in Latin America, there has ... read more

Tlaquepaque and Tonala are the younger, crazier twin sisters of Guadalajara. Lying equidistant from Guadalajara at 45 minutes in opposite directions, they share one main commonality: they are both known for being quite large market towns that specialize in handmade crafts from this region of Mexico. This is where there similarities end, however. Tlaquepaque is the snobbier of the two. If you were to peek into her closet, you would observe that her clothes are organized not only by article, but by color as well. You might even take note of the fact that the smell is quite pleasant. This fact would draw your eyes to a small lavender sachet attached to the coat hanger of her best dress, which would surely involve some sort of lace made in France. Tonala's closet, however, would consist of ... read more

You always remember your first. This was my first time ever in Mexico. My roommate from college, who is like a brother to me, invited me to his family home in San Miguel el Alto. The Orozco are some, if not the kind group of human beings that I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Sometimes I fear that they would realize that I'm not even on the level and disconnect from me. But even then, it would still have been a pleasure to have shared all these experiences with them. This little town doesn't get too many Asian tourist, so I was treating somewhat like a celebrity. It didn't do much, but inflated my already big ego. The town itself felt as though it had been frozen in time. The people were so kind! The ... read more

To a mosquito, I have always been the holy grail, the Mecca, the Wailing Wall. To a mosquito, taking a chunk of my forearm or calf is akin to the feeling one gets upon scaling their first mountain, puckering up for the first time, or meeting their red-haired piano-playing idol. If two mosquitos were having a conversation, one would most likely say to the other: "She's the cat's meow." Mosquitos love antiquated idioms. Upon my arrival in Guadalajara, the mosquitos had a giant fiesta. This is Mexico afterall, so they threw their sombrero'd heads back in hearty guffaws as shots of tequila were passed 'round and female mosquitos were grabbed by their mosquito waists and pulled tight to dance to the tunes played by talented mosquito mariachis. Against my wishes, and without an RSVP, I attended ... read more

Hola, We have returned from Guadalajara with some wonderful memories of a beautiful countryside and good people met along the way. The purpose of this trip was to move our daughter, Annie, down to Guadalajara to join her husband, Chad, who is enrolled in a medical internship there. Annie will be teaching 3rd grade in a private school there. Thus, the loaded pick-up truck and 30 hrs of driving (one way) in two days with three adults in the front seat was actually fun but exhausting :) Chad did take us around to see the sights the first day we were there, but the rest of the time we spent helping Annie get her new home cleaned and set up. I did attempt to post a blog at a very swanky Starbucks but had muy technical ... read more

So the stress is over! We had exams yesterday (Thursday)...not sure what my "notas" are, but I will soon find out. We are trying to "live it up" our last couple of days in Guadalajara...after exams, we took a long siesta and then headed out to the clubs! The scene last night was similar to east Atlanta...alternative-ish...lots of music lovers, etc. We went to Wingston's, a place that only sells hot wings and beer, then to a club on top of a roof of a building, then to a bar called Bali Bar. Bali Bar had this amazing cover band...a girl and a guy singer...they could sing ANYTHING...Queen, Reggaeton music, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and on and on...Crystal and I especially loved the band...they'd alternate a few songs of the band and then discotheque music. We stayed ... read more

Hola Familia y amigos, Time is short but I'll write more in a couple of days. We had a great adventure getting over the border but luckily it did not involve any jail time or taking any tarps & ropes off. :) Guadalajara is a city of 6 million people and it took us roughly 30 hours to drive from Las Vegas to here. Tomorrow Brent and I are leaving to drive back home. We plan to stop at Mazatlan and find some giant shrimp for Brent. Hope you are all well. Adios, Patty... read more

I'd say the best part about going to Mexico has been, besides the sights and attractions, besides the new experiences, besides learning Spanish....has been simply hanging out with the people I'm rooming with and the other GSU students that are living down the street. Yesterday, after classes ended, we decided to go to the San Juan de Dios market near downtown Guadalajara. I had heard that it was a really big market, but I had no idea exactly to what extent. This place was actually an indoor market, and it would have taken 3 or 4 hours to shop the whole thing. It was a cramped, crowded, and hot, giant multiple-floor warehouse. If you wanted a watch, they had 'em. If you wanted sunglasses, they had 'em. If you wanted a microwave, they had 'em too. ... read more
