We had nothing planned for the day other than to pick up tickets at the Ajijic auditorium. Molly Johnson with the Guido Basso Quartet is performing here in January. We have secured second row centre seats. We took the bus to the auditorium and decided to walk back. We had not gone very far when we came to the Pranzo Bistro. It was very busy place for 10:30 in the morning and since we had only had a little fresh fruit and yogurt we decided it was a good time for brunch. Everyone in the restaurant was entertained by a small mariachi band. It was great fun so we will try and come to this place for a Saturday brunch more often. The service and food were both good. We stopped at a pottery shop as ... read more

November 15, 2013 It was warmer today but still jacket temperatures. We returned to Chapala and after yesterday’s trip we knew exactly where we were going. There was already a line up along the street to get into the Yacht Club. The art show is called The Feria Maestros del Arte. Select artists and artisans from many areas throughout Mexico display and sell their work at this show. The workmanship is amazing. I bought a gourd that is transformed into a shallow bowl with intricate beadwork. This is traditional art of the Huichol of Mexico. They are best known to the larger world as the Huichol, however, they refer to themselves as Wixáritari ("the people") in their native Huchol language. I also purchased a little vase made of Pine needles from the Oaxaca area of Mexico. ... read more

Well it felt like early spring today. We headed out with a sweater and nylon jacket but by the afternoon we were able to remove the sweaters. We thought we were going to have to make a trip into Guadalajara for a visit to immigration however our next door neighbour not only had the address of their office in Chapala, she drove us there and provided a quick tour around town at the same time. I had a quick question for immigration which took all of 5 minutes and then we were then free to spend the rest of the day in Chapala. We walked along the Malecón where there are still some Catrinas in very good condition from Day of the Dead. Although the English translation of Malecón is Jetty, in both Ajijic and Chapala ... read more

Winter has arrived in Ajijic!!! Hopefully it won’t last long. A person who has lived here for 40 years said that they have never experienced cold weather like this even in January, never mind November. We became members of the Canadian Club in Mexico today. The speaker this day was Wayne Palfrey who is the person that I mentioned who has live here for 40 years. He is the principle at a local school in Ajijic and spoke to us about the Mexican revolution which will be celebrated throughout Mexico next week. He is an excellent speaker and if my history teachers in school had been more like him, history would have been my favourite subject. The club had a very good turnout considering that everyone was freezing. The meetings are regularily held at the Nueva ... read more

We have been laying low for a couple of days. Last Friday (November 8th) we walked out to the Super Lake Store rather than Walmart, which is the other large grocery store near us. We really like Super Lake although many of the locals complain about the prices there. We found that the local products were about the same price as anywhere else. The imported goods were expensive but we are ok with that. They have an amazing selection and variety of products. It seems that the other stores in the same little strip mall are family run, maybe all by the same family. We shopped at the butcher shop and the wine shop. There is also a little fish market that looks good. Tony’s Restaurant which is definitely the same owner as the butcher shop ... read more

In the afternoon, our friends Wendy and Lorne picked us up and we went to a nearby clubhouse in El Parque. The clubhouse is part of the housing complex where our other friends live. It was really walking distance from us if we had known where we were going. There we had a nice reunion with Dona and Michael and played Mexican Train dominoes with them, Wendy and Lorne, and a few of their friends. Donna, who volunteers at the Lakeside Little Theatre had a couple of free tickets for that evening which was a pre-opening night performance of The Heiress. She offered them to us and we gratefully accepted. After dominoes, Wendy and Lorne took us to their house for a pre-dinner drink and then to a little seafood restaurant in San Antonio for dinner. ... read more

Wednesday is market day in Ajijic. There are baked goods, fresh vegetables, fish, chicken, handicrafts and clothing all available in this market. The vegetables are much fresher looking than those in the grocery stores. Our friends in Carriacou will understand my excitement when I saw the stacks of celery on the stands. Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are in season so along with the regular papaya and bananas and other fruit, I had to buy some seasonal fruit to make use of our new immersion blender. I also purchased some corn on the cob. A local street food here is steamed corn on the cob smothered with sour cream and the piled high with a cheese that looks similar to parmesan cheese, it isn’t and I don’t know what it’s called, but I bought some. The last ... read more

Wow!!! There was amazing thunder and lightning last night just before we fell asleep. What was more amazing however was our morning wake-up. I can’t believe we have found a place that is so quiet, no dogs barking, no roosters crowing, no cars or vehicles, just the sound of song birds in the morning. We have not experienced this anywhere in our travels. We will spend a few days getting to know our new neighbours and exploring the area.... read more

Moving day!! We packed our bags before breakfast and had a nice last visit with Eleanor and her husband Richard before Jorge picked us up. As promised he helped us transfer all of our things into our little place. He was excited to show us all of the purchases he had made according to my list. I thought of a few other items but didn’t mention them. Now that we knew what he provided we could decide what things we would purchase for the place. We walked to Walmart again, this time from the opposite direction and it was a shorter walk. As expected we found everything we wanted there. Since we had two grocery carts over flowing we returned home in a taxi with the trunk and back seat full. Now, we had to unpack, ... read more

In the morning we went for a nice walk along residential streets of La Foresta . The streets are lovely but it’s not possible to see very much of the actual houses. The high Mexican walls keep each house very private and secure. We came out to the main street, Carretera just before Walmart so of course we wandered up and down the aisles in Walmart and checked things out. I think we will be able to purchase just about everything here that we would buy back home in Canada. On our stroll back to Ajijic, we found and stopped at a nice little cafe where we had a cappuccino and watched the girl make old fashioned homemade ice cream. We arrived in the Plaza just in time for a light lunch. Light, because we are ... read more
