An hour taxi ride took us over the mountains and down to Lake Chapala, and into another world... We saw very few non-Mexicans in Guadalajara (maybe 8 at the most) and here it seems like there only non-Mexicans! This is one of the larger ex-pat areas of Mexico.... We are staying at a beautiful hotel...an exquisite tropical paradise complete with swimming pool, elegant resident dog, and flowers everywhere...It's not quite twice what we paid for our hotel in Guadalajara....and is an expanded version of the lovely house we rented... there are only 4 rooms, and not all are occupied, so it's very peaceful. We had lunch on the lake front, at a place that advertised an all-you-can-eat buffet (which we resisted and had veggie quesadillas instead). The only other customers were groups of straw-hatted gringos, well ... read more

Friday, January 17 The new golf cart arrived today, it’s now painted bright red, has two speeds, a windscreen, lights, turn indicators and a horn. With this cart we can go places after dark which we couldn’t really do with the old one. I was anxious to take it for a test drive but it needed to be charged. Instead we borrowed the old cart (Mary Anne’s) and went to the ATM for some cash then stopped and picked up some chicken and ribs for lunch. We were back in less than an hour. In the evening, we went with Jorge to pick up Alejandra at work in Chapala then drove to Enrique’s Restaurant, “Merendero” in Ajijic. Paul and Mary Anne were already there. We joined them and enjoyed our appetizers while we waited for Yvonne, ... read more

Friday, January 24 It was my birthday and Rick tried to pamper me in the morning before we were to leave for the hot springs. Jorge knocked on our door before I was even dressed to give me a lovely flower arrangement. With bathing suit on under our clothes, we walked outside to go to the hot springs but disaster..... the sky was cloudy and the air was cool. According to Jorge, it was going to remain like this all day and was not a good day to go to the spa. Plan B, we decided to relax and go to see the movie Jack Ryan which was playing at the theatre. Not too exciting, no dinner out, bottom line, this birthday was a write off. I get to remain the same age until birthday celebrations ... read more

Saturday, February 1 It was nice to be able to sleep a little later this morning, no tour planned and no bus or van to meet this day. We had a relaxing day until late afternoon. Jorge was going to Guadalajara and couldn’t be our taxi this evening. Instead he offered us his little red car which we have borrowed/rented from him before. It was about 3PM when Rick went to get the keys from Jorge but he wasn’t home. Since we planned to leave at 4 pm, I phoned Jorge to see where he was and when he would be back. Oops... he was in Guadalajara and had forgotten to leave the keys. No Problem! Mary Anne was coming with us to Piano Rojo so we left a little early and took the bus. The ... read more

Wednesday, January 29 We had quite a few errands to run today so we made it a golf cart day. First on the agenda was to stop and have some food from the Lady that cooks tortillas on the wheel barrel. There is no name on the building so I didn’t know what to call her. A Mexican lady we met who was also eating there suggested that I call her la señora de las tortillas. So that’s what we have named her and her little hole in the wall restaurant. We drove through Ajijic, stopping here and there with our last stop being Granos Coffee where we sat and enjoyed a cappuccino and latte before heading home.... read more

Monday, January 20 Well it had to happen, we have already purchased so many souvenirs and gifts that we know they will not fit in our existing suitcases so we have to buy a spare suitcase just to get them home. I had already checked Walmart and their large suit cases were over $100 CAD. There are so many thrift and second hand shops around, I was sure we would find one a lot less expensive. We went for a walk to a large “Bazaar” out on the main street. Sure enough, they had a nice large one that look almost new and even came with a key and lock. Total cost $25 CAD. Sold!! Tuesday, January 21 Spa Day, I went for another facial and Rick had a pedicure while waiting for me. It was ... read more

Sunday, February 2 Super Bowl Sunday! Almost every restaurant in town was advertising a big screen TV and special Super Bowl dinner. Paul, our only American neighbour, and a true Seattle Seahawk fan was anxious to see the game but in the end, we all decided to have our own Super Bowl party by the pool. Jorge took one of the large screen TV’s out of an empty unit and set it up by the palapa hut. We gathered the tables and chairs around the TV. Everyone prepared food. Maryanne and Linda brought enough appetizers that we didn’t really need any additional food. However, Phina (Paul’s friend) made frijoles soup, Paul barbecued hamburgers, I made potato salad and brought a few racks of pork ribs, Jorge (who got the baby Jesus in the Three Kings cake ... read more

Wednesday, January 15 Although today was market day we purposely avoided going. We did the same on Monday, avoided the market. The availability for fresh food and produce is so tempting here that I find I am continually buying food. Our fridge and freezer are bulging at the seams so I want to make sure that we eat what we have before I buy any more. The Canadian Club monthly meeting was held in the Nueva Posada and this month, the guest speaker was Robert Reid. Robert is a travel journalist and the spokesperson for the Lonely Planet Travel Guide. He is an extremely good speaker and he had us all in stitches with the hilarious stories he share. The stories were as much about his life and family as they were about travel. He was ... read more

Wednesday, January 8 This was a busy day. Our cleaning lady comes on Mondays to clean but on Wednesday she does our laundry. So we are normally up, showered and dressed by 8:30am when the knock on the door announces her arrival. Wednesday is also Tienda (Market) day in Ajijic. We don’t usually take the camera with us to the Market because we have enough to carry with all of our purchases. This week we didn’t need much of anything so the camera was not a problem. Most people in the Ajijic Market like to have their picture taken and some even approached us and asked us to take their picture. Others however avoid the camera. We had fun with those who we have gotten to know in the couple of months we have been here. ... read more

Thursday, January 2, The sun was shining and the forecast was that each day going forward will be warmer and sunnier. It was time to come out of hibernation. Mary Anne asked if either of us would like to go cruising in the golf cart with her. I was anxious to get out and go anywhere so the two women took off down the back streets of San Antonio to Ajijic. As we neared Centro Ajijic the golf cart got slower and slower. Mary Anne had been counting the number of times it had been used since the last charge and although Jorge had told her it would make about 4 trips to and from Ajijic on a single charge, we now determined it will really make 3 ½ trips. We parked the cart near the ... read more
