This will be my last blog entry for Mexico. The rest of March was busy with another trip to the San Juan Cosala Termal Hot Springs and Spa. We joined 16 other ex-sailors for a pot luck dinner at our friends Wendy and Lorne’s house. It was great fun; everyone brought a picture and gave a description of their boat. Then before dinner each couple narrated a sailing experience. Some of course were of harrowing experiences. We attended a fashion show and lunch at Roberto’s restaurant. Our friend Wendy was a model in the show. Maryanne, Rick and I took a local bus into the town Jocotepec on market day. We wandered through town, found the market, roamed and shopped, then found a nice restaurant for lunch. As we moved from March into April we jointly ... read more

Saturday, March 1 The month of March began with an evening at Piano Rojo. We have definitely become regulars there. It is a small but very fun place. Here we can experience the same shows that are much more expensive in other cities. Tonight we attended the Forever Elvis Show. Rob Knight who is a Canadian is Elvis. Sitting in our front row centre seats we had a great time. Sunday, March 2 You would think we have attended enough Zayacas for our visit to Mexico but this is the last Zayacas this year before carnival. It is becoming very familiar. We recognise the people in the parade and they recognise us. As we become familiar we are much more likely to be attacked with flour. The parties at the Malecon after the parade are becoming ... read more

Friday, February 28 Wednesday was Alejandra’s birthday but since she works we all planned a surprise birthday party for her tonight (Friday) after work. Jorge invited her friends and family as well as his family. His aunt Maria made Posole for dinner, Alejandra’s favourite (mine too). He rented tables and chairs for the evening, decorated the pool area with lights and even had flowers for every table. In the afternoon we went to the bakery and picked up a couple of birthday cakes. Just before 7 pm the Mariachi band arrived so that they would be there to perform when Alejandra and Jorge arrived just after 7 pm. The party was a great success. Alejandra was surprised, the Mariachi band stayed and played all night, and everyone danced and had a good time. A congo line ... read more

Saturday, February 22 We went to Superlake for a few groceries in the morning for both us and for Dubi and Esti who were to arrive later in the day. Jorge had a villa available and offered to let them rent it for just a week. We left with Jorge for the drive to Guadalajara bus station where we were to pick up Dubi and Esti at 5 pm. Their bus was a little early so they were waiting for us when we arrived. On the drive home Jorge took the route through Chapala so they could see the beautiful view of the lake from the highway. Once Dubi and Esti had settled into their villa we had an easy meal of take out ribs, chicken and coleslaw that I had picked up earlier in the ... read more

Sunday, February 16 Rick and I took the bus into Ajijic in time for the Sunday Zayacas parade. There were a few more costumed men/boys in the parade then before and they were all having a great time. I think there was more flour and confetti being thrown this Sunday over last Sunday. When we had watched the parade go by us in both directions, we went for lunch rather than follow the crowd to the bullring. We chose the Peacock restaurant which is right in the centre of town. Once you go through the archway into the restaurant you would never imagine that you were anywhere near town it is so peaceful and serene with a large grassy area and beautiful gardens. That’s the first impression, then, the parrot starts calling to you and the ... read more

Saturday, February 15 We went to the Ajijic Chili Cook-off. Jorge and Alejandra drove us to the water park which was where it was to take place. We missed the parade but that was probably because I never imagined that there would be a parade for a Chili Cook-off. The water park was busy with many families enjoying the many pools and water slides. We walked by all of the pools and the saw row after row of vendor stalls. Maryanne and I were in our element. Rick was patient as usual while we shopped in the clothing and jewelry stalls. Eventually, hunger and thirst led us to the food area. We thought it would be all chili but instead we found everything from ribs, Chinese food, chili dogs and even a section of Mexican favourites. ... read more

Jorge suggested that we come with his family into town for the festival of Zayacas. This is a pre-carnival festival which now takes place every Sunday leading up to Carnival. Young men dress as women and run around the streets throwing flour and confetti on anyone that happens to be within reach. It is actually a parade that begins with the younger boys running ahead to avoid the flour. It’s all a ruse because they love getting coated with it. As in every other parade that we have experienced in Ajijic, there are also bands and the cowboys, some with their dancing horses. We first watched the parade as it went by the plaza in town then we and everyone else moved a couple of blocks south and watched it come back the other direction. I ... read more

Thursday, February 13 Rick suggested that we go into Chapala today. A few weeks ago we had looked at jewelry in the Ajijic Plaza during a jewelry show and there was one of the stands that I found many unique pieces that I liked. He was ready to buy me a valentine’s gift that I could wear during the Valentine’s dinner he has planned for tomorrow. (He is really trying to make up for my disappointment on my birthday. He is doing a great job.) I found a necklace I liked but I wanted a different stone. The jeweler told us to go for a walk and come back in an hour. He replaced the colourful stone in the necklace with a large obsidian stone. I was very pleased with this stone as when we visited ... read more

Thursday, February 6 Adelita’s Bar and Restaurant where we had eaten before and enjoyed it, has half price wing and Margarita night on Thursday’s. With nothing else to do, we had to give it a try. It was a fun evening with Maryanne and Paul. Adelita’s is a great location for us because we can walk there. Friday, February 7 Johnny Mama’s Restaurant and Bar has Karaoke night every Friday. This is another place within walking distance however Paul wanted to drive. It was another fun evening and we watched rather than participated. Saturday, February 8 It was BBQ day at Villas Marie José (our little complex). It began unplanned but quickly transformed into a party. We had purchased some steaks, potatoes, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and even sour cream for our dinner and although we did ... read more

We were awakened Wednesday night about 2:00 am by a small party going on in the patio....I finally put earplugs in and got back to sleep....but Bill said it went on til 4:00am. We asked about the noise this morning and I think I understood that the people had been asked to leave, even though they were booked for the next night too...We were given a bottle of Champagne as an apology from the hotel...so Valentine's Day is now taken care of! We took a bus to the town of Chapala yesterday, and explored this bigger and more active town down the lakeshore from Ajijic. There are fewer ex-pats there, and older, elegant buildings from the 1930s, when it was a destination for wealthy Mexicans and Europeans. It has a beautiful malecon (walkway) along the lake. ... read more
