Back in December, when a group of us went to Isla Ixtapa, we passed by a waterpark in Ixtapa. It looked like fun. Since then, we’ve talked about going. Today, we finally did. Jazzy and I headed out first. We tendered ashore, got a taxi, rode from Zihautanejo to Ixtapa and walked into the waterpark. Then we were confused. There was no gate, no ticket booth, just a walkway leading into the park. We walked around and saw nobody. The wave pool was still but the slides had water running. We wondered if it was closed. Eventually we found somebody and they told us that yes, it was open and we paid our ticket fee. We got ourselves a couple of beach chairs and laid out for a bit. It was hot! We had to keep ... read more

Pacific Dreams So, once again I find myself including a few too many photos... Sorry everyone - I tend to think they tell a story of their own, as I’m not actually expecting anyone to struggle through my longwinded stories :) I’ll try to keep it short this time... Maruata I guess I should’ve learned by now that anywhere described in the Lonely Planet isn’t actually going to be anything like what I imagine. This also turned out to be true for the first stop on our search for the Pacific Dream: Long white-sanded beaches with palm trees and cabanas with ocean views. Maruata is described just like that; a secluded little Oceanside village (with potentially no electricity, we read online) known only for the sea turtles that come here and lay their eggs at night ... read more

We had our last three quiet, beautiful days of sun and waves in Pie de la Cuesta... It is surprising that Pie de la Cuesta is not more touristy. It started out as a fishing village, which then became a place to eat a fresh fish dinner in palapas on the beach. Inexpensive hotels were added, but the main attraction is still the fish dinners. Since you can't swim or surf, those crowds don't come. People come from Acapulco, and Mexico City (and smaller cities), for the weekend or holidays. Canadians come for longer. There are no tourist shops in town, except for one selling beach toys and bathing suits. It is really wonderful! If you go, stay at Villa Nirvana, and ask for Room 16, unless of course, we are there! We are now back ... read more

About a month before my family came to cruise with me, I’d emailed them options for what we could do in the ports of call. The one thing my cousin Kelsey had to do was swim with dolphins. I’d never done this before, though it’s been offered on most ships I’ve worked on. Crew rarely get passes to do this tour and I’d never wanted to do it badly enough to spend the money on it. But I still had some money left over from Christmas presents, which I’d been told was to use on excursions from the ship, so it seemed like the time for me to swim with the dolphins as well. It was an early morning for me and I sure looked and felt rough when I met the family. We took the ... read more

One of the “must see” things in Acapulco are the Cliff Divers. For generations, local men have been diving off a cliff from a height of up to 120 feet into a narrow channel where the water is only 18-25 feet deep. I hadn’t been to see the divers on my own yet, as it was something I wanted to bring my family to see. So tonight was the night to see the divers. We had a quick room service dinner in their cabin, then Uncle Allan, Aunt Renee, Kelsey and I got off the ship and took a taxi to the cliffs. There are a couple of spots where you can take in the show. We decided to go to the comfortable option of sitting in an open-air lounge on top of the cliff. We ... read more

I have family onboard and we’re in port - an excellent combination! Today’s port was Acapulco. We don’t arrive in port until noon which considering I work so late at night, I love. I get to sleep in and still have a full port day. Uncle Allan, Aunt Renee and Kelsey watched the ship sail into Acapulco Bay and up to the pier while I still slept. But then we met up and headed out into the city. We actually split up today for our day time tours. Uncle Allan and Aunt Renee did a walking and shopping tour of the city. Kelsey and I went snorkeling. The two of us boarded a dive boat right at the end of the cruise pier. The snorkel tour, “Captain’s Choice” takes you to two of many different snorkel ... read more

Saturday: It seems that Acapulco is a magnet of sorts for mistakes in our Mexico travels. Some of you may remember that we ended up in Aca last time after having made the mistake of skipping it on our way between Zihuateneo and Taxco. (We decided that Taxco was too noisy and turned around the next day and came back to Aca.) Well, this time we have now decided that we should have stayed in Pie de la Cuesta and made a a day trip or two into Aca. So, here we are, at the Acamar for just one night, and planning to return to Pie tomorrow! We just couldn’t find the charm we’d seen the first time here….especially compared to the Villa Nirvana and Pie itself. It didn’t help that we arrived on Saturday afternoon, ... read more

Well....it is cool and rainy today. The storm came in with high winds around 2:00 am, waking Bill (who was getting wet) and not me. The hotel doesn't have any real indoor spaces: our room has screens but no way to close off the windows. The covered patio gives us quite a bit of protection, but the wind was blowing hard enough to push rain into the room. It calmed down after about 30 minutes, but has been raining most of the day since then. We made it to the cash machine in the OXXO (like a 7/11) on the main road, but are waiting for a break to go eat dinner! I saw some bright orange and yellow birds today, but don't know what they are....There are many long-tailed grackles here: black with yellow eyes ... read more

We're figuring out more of the rhythms here. We were eating around 7:00, after sunset, and most places seemed to be closing up then. So we went earlier, before sunset. The same problem; we were the only ones eating. We asked the hotel owners who told us most Mexicans eat their big meal around 3:00.....so that's what we did yesterday. But we were hungry by 8:00pm, and went out to hunt for food. We found a great place by the lagoon, filled with Europeans eating....we had a snack there in a beautiful setting.... Yesterday we went down to beach and sat just above the surf, to watch the sun set. There were many people on the beach, and everyone was turned towards the horizon....as the sun disappeared, clapping broke out.... The waves are a bit smaller ... read more
