Hello again everybody, Almost a week away from phones and computers has suited me just fine. It was last Thursday that Matt and I arrived at the Ixtapa-Zihautenejo airport to meet our Dad and Stepmom, Peter and Beth. As I travelled across Canada last fall, me and my Dad joked all the time about meeting in Mexico for Christmas. We missed Christmas, but its been a swell little family reunion on the Pacific Coast... Denny and Maribel, the couple that owns the Casa del Brisas del Mar met the four of us at the airport. From there, it was about an hours´ drive south to Brisas del Mar. The community consists of about fifteen people, thirty goats, five pigs, and five kilometers of beach. Denny and Maribel have spent the last three years buying their property, ... read more

For reasons that are perhaps only comprehensible to the Mexican mind, they built Acapulco´s airport at least an hour away from the city itself (Jean Drapeau would be proud). Having been greeted warmly and persistently by about a hundred taxi drivers upon exiting the airport, I decided we would try our luck on a local bus (our mission being to get into Acapulco and find a bus terminal to extract us from that hell hole). About an hour of traffic jam later, we had succeeded in finding a tiny bus station on the outskirts of Acapulco that would take us back North towards Mexico City, but in no other direction. Darkness having fallen, and with no sign of a bus to take us into the center of town, I caved and we got in a taxi ... read more

While in Cuernavaca we took a weekend trip to Acapulco in 2003. We arrived late on a Friday evening and stayed until Sunday. It was rainy much of the time that we were there but that did not stop us from enjoying the beach. Our hotel was in perfect position to take advantage of the city. The hotel was literaly on the beach as one of its exits lead straight to the sand. Acapulco was more of a relaxing tip than a cultural trip as I would imagine it is for most people. Saturday we did go to see cliff divers which were real amazing. Otherwise it was night clubs, watching my roomate bungie jump, going out to eat and of course the revenge of Montezuma! ... read more

Yes, I am now in Acapulco, Mexico. It is very much like Rio de Janeiro in many ways - sun, sand, beach volleyball, lifesavers, concerts on the beach...I love it! We are hoping to move to somewhere more tranquil and paradise-like soon, but are not sure where. We are doing the stupid thing of travelling without a guide book ( we were too stingy to buy one for only two weeks) so it is a challenge! Hoping to make friends with some nice backpackers with a Lonely Planet soon! Last night we went to a restaurant with a real life Manuel from “Fawlty Towers” (I apologise to those of you who are not British and have no idea what I am going on about!). It was uncanny though. He had everything - the black trousers and ... read more

Taxco is known as the Silver City of Mexico. The city is located in the state of Guerrero, 106 miles (170 km) from Mexico City. Silver has been mined in the area since pre-Colombian times. The Spanish picked up the mining pace during the colonial era. The city preserved its Spanish colonial look with its narrow cobblestone streets and Baroque church. The city is known to visitors today for its craftsmanship in silversmithing and fashioning of silver jewelry. Shops selling articles of silver line the main street. My mother and I stayed overnight in Taxco before returning to Mexico City and our Mexicana flight back to Los Angeles. Mr. Stadleman had arranged with a tour company to provide a guide and car for us for the two-day overnight visit to Taxco. However, there appeared to have ... read more

In 1965, the port of Acapulco was not deep enough to accommodate a ship of Oriana's size (albeit Oriana was smaller than the popular cruise ships of today). Instead, Oriana anchored in Acapulco Bay. Passengers needed to use tenders to reach the dock, as is still the custom at many island ports today. Two long accommodation ladders were rigged at the side of ship to lead down from the Promenade Deck to the waiting tenders. The tenders in use were open cargo lighters. Once on the dock in Acapulco, we teamed up with two young teachers we'd met on board to share a taxi for sightseeing. They were from New Jersey and replied "We teach" when my mother asked them what they did. The taxi driver took us on a sightseeing drive up to an overlook ... read more
