I got to Taxco and it pissed down with rain, very soon and for the next hour I was to discover how difficult it is to get a taxi in Taxco in the rain. NOBODY walks in the rain here, so I stood in the rain for an hour (at least) I stopped checking the time after that, whilst waiting, hoping, preying for a taxi to stop. In the end I had to do as the Romans were doing and fight people off for a taxi. Soaking wet I got to the hotel and boy oh boy what a treat was in store for me. By now I had the beginnings of a stinking cold, which is in fact still with me; I'm at the thick mucus stage whilst writing this. The hotel Melendez had two ... read more

Drove down from Tejupilco with Javier and Arlen, via the amazing, huge Cacahuamilpa caves, and Taxco - a pretty old colonial town in the hills, with lots of silver shops. Have just spent 2 days on the beach in Pie de la Cuesta.. a quiet place about 10km west of Acapulco.. so we´re no longer at altitude... and the temperature difference is huge,, it´s HOT here! Explored Acapulco on day one, but is full of bars, clubs, McDonalds, Starbucks etc... so we visited Walmart to get supplies and headed back to our little beach! We did see the Quebrada cliff divers though.... amazing Javier and Arlen have headed back on the 8 hour drive back to the mountains.. and Cheryl and I have found a little paradise (Hotel Rozana) so have decided to stay another 2 ... read more

We found the heat! Acapulco is as you can imagine; more of a holiday maker resort than a cultural experience. The beach is lined with high-rise hotels and whilst you can envisage why the likes of Elizabeth Taylor would have retreated here in the 60´s, the old parts to Acapulco have become over ruled by the more modern and commercial "new" Acapulco. We met some cool people and experienced a beach massage from Tony Macoroni Mahoney and his "healing hands" (we didn´t have any choice in the matter, he was so insistent!) but our favourite moments here are of watching the Cliff Divers in the evening. The Divers jump from a maximum of 35 feet into a cove of crashing waves, a misjudge of the currents can cause injury and even loss of life (apparently). Above ... read more

Mariner anchors in Acapulco Bay this morning and the city of one million inhabitants surrounds us. Buildings, in various stages of construction, are scattered down the hillside. Some of these buildings have probably had the same construction going on for many years, a Mexican tax strategy to avoid paying taxes. Two large Celebrity ships are docked in the harbor. Soon, thousands of cruise passengers join the Good Friday crowd. Considering that this is Easter week and there are many locals enjoying the area too, Alan and I opt to stay onboard. Since bodyguard duty precludes us from taking excursions, we aren’t interested in walking around a shopping area in a crowd of tourists fighting off vendors on a hot day. Our fellow passengers have many choices though. They can visit the city highlights and watch famous ... read more

Despite having heard less than brilliant reports of Acapulco we decided we would still go and were pleasantly surprised, we thought it was a cool place. Most of our time was spent on the beach, working on our suntans and enjoying a bit of chill-out time. The sea was much warmer than Rio. We also swam in the hotel pool most days as, for once, we were staying in a nice hotel. We spent a couple of nights at Senor Frogs, a themed American style restaurant, the theme being Mr Frog! We loved it there, it had a great atmosphere and a brilliant view of Acapulco bay. Obviously we ate fajitas but instead of Corona we drank yards of Pina Coladas and Daiquiris.... read more

This was one of those trips that I only had 2 sort of days off so I had to make them worth it! The weather was gorgeous when I arrived so as soon as I got off the plane I headed straight for the pool. I wandered down to the beach but I was unimpressed with the murky grey of the water. And the stories about the armed guards at the beach entrance are all true! The beach is federally controlled so there was a guy all in black with an uzi just watching the touristas going down to the beach. I would've taken a picture but he was kinda intimidating. So I spent most of my free time hanging around the resort but considering I was working until 8pm most nights, there was much free ... read more

Here are a few pictures from my trip to Ixtapa, Mexico. This was truly a treat because it was an annual event put on by a company I work with. 2 words come to mind: ALL INCLUSIVE. This meant hotel room over looking the ocean, food at the 5 restaurants on premise, drinks-Corona and Margaritas, a snorkeling, fishing or dolphin trip and after partys at the discothèque. I must admit, I was a bit spoiled!... read more
