Very quiet at the hotel last night. Went out this morning to get fruit. So oranges, bananas, pastries and coffee for breakfast on the patio. Bob makes good coffee. A hummingbird flew in closeby to visit. Cool in the mornings, but it starts to really heat up about 9:00am. Lots of activity on the street in the morning...vendors setting up their stalls, shops opening, etc. Lots of cats on the sidewalks this morning. Heard many doves cooing. Walked down to the beach and pier this morning. Bought boat tickets to go to the beach, Playa Las Gatas. Tickets very cheap, 50 cents total for two round trip tickets. A short (about 10 minutes), pleasant ride. The beach is lined with restaurants, tables, and lounge chairs. Each restaurant has their own welcomer, urging you to stop and ... read more

Left home before 5am to catch our 6:50 flight. No problems, very short lines at security. Flight left on time, and arrived in Zihuatanejo about 11:30. We only had carry-on, got a green light at customs inspection, so we got through very quickly. First stop was the ATM, which gave us 21.4 pesos per dollar, even after the conversion fee. You buy a taxi ticket at the airport, then pick up your ride outside. The 20 dollar taxi ride to the hotel was higher than we expected. You can find cheaper taxis away from the airport, but it is a very long walk with luggage. Our cab took us to the door of Hotel Zihua Express, which we had reserved through Booking.com. Hotel was clean and quiet, very friendly and helpful host. Balcony looked over the ... read more

The whole point of going to an all-inclusive resort was to avoid getting sick if at all possible. If you read the previous blog you'll know that we headed back to the room on about night 5 and found that Kyla had a fever. The next morning she tested at 102 degrees. After another bout of baby paracetamol we headed out to breakfast. Being paranoid first-time parents, we took the thermometer along with us and it seemed that she was getting hotter and hotter. We threw some food down our throats as quickly as possible and then rushed back to the air-conditioned room where she quickly tested cooler. We decided that the best course of action at that point was to get her into bathers and put her in a cool shower and head to the ... read more

There's nothing like the first day of a vacation. Everything is still new and exciting and you have the satisfaction of knowing that you have it all ahead of you. We headed down to breakfast on our first morning and was able to sit outside to eat this time, now that the pesky mosquitoes were tucked up safely in bed. After a leisurely and rather hearty meal (damn those breakfast buffets!) we strolled down to find a good spot by the pool to spend the day. Eeek, what the heck! It was only 9:30am and it appeared that all of the sunbeds were taken, each one being occupied by a coral-colored Club Med towel but only about 10% occupied by people. We quickly learned that you had to rush down before breakfast and reserve your lounge ... read more

Well, this weekend was certainly eventful. Where to start? I was invited by a friend, Paula, to her house for the weekend for her birthday party. Her family lives in Chilpancingo, which is the capital of the state of Guerrero. We went by bus from Cuernavaca to Chilpancingo, a trip of about 3 hours. We left Friday night. When we got there, it was around eight, and Anthony (an American, from New York) and I mentioned that we would like to eat :). Paula and her family brought us to a church event. Quick explanation, September 15 is the Independence Day of Mexico. The entire weekend, there were parties and general rowdyness. So, we were at this church sponsored Independence Day event, and there was dancing and music and free food. This is, I was told, ... read more

We left Maruata on Monday, February 25th and settled in at El Mangler RV Park in my favorite Mexican city, Zihuatanejo. The park is about two thirds full. Some regulars have left already but others arrived after we did. Situated behind a high wall, we don't get much breeze. Its hot and humid. Temps are in the upper 80s but weather reports say "it feels like 93". Power for air conditioning is excellent so the cats can stay cool during the day. The temperature cools down after the sun sets. GiGi and AnGi enjoy sitting out at night. Internet service here is ok. The cold showers are not. We have to shower in the camper. The only real drawback is that we can't get enough exercise here. It takes only half an hour to walk the ... read more

***Disclaimer- this probably isn't worth reading if you want to find out anything about travel in Mexico. It's just about our very pedestrian, non-adventurous trip to Club Med. But, if you are one of the friends/family or reader just checking in- here goes... Where is the taxi? We are waiting outside in suburban Miami having rung for a taxi at 4, it's now 0430 and I'm mildly anxious. Call the company- yep they're on the way. 0445 still waiting but the phone rings- the taxi guy is lost. Luckily he's only 3 mins around the corner. Board AeroMexico on time and have a really great flight, the terrain is fascinating- mountainous and green. As we approach Mexico City the density becomes higher, higher, higher.... Wow- it's huge, but interesting and colourful. I love the splashes and ... read more

Wednesday 12/09/12 – After a rough night spent on the floor of the lounge, the ferry arrived in the large port city of Mazatlan (in the state of Sinaloa) this morning. The ferry had 4 car decks (our bikes were on level 1), and despite our best efforts we couldn’t understand the messages over the dodgy PA system. After a while one of the ferry workers came in to the lounge talking about ‘numero uno’ so after checking he was definitely talking about us, we grabbed our gear and headed down the almost vertical stairs. They did have an elevator; it was the size of a shower unit and was limited to only 3 passengers at a time. We got down to level one where there was only about 5 cars and our bikes left – ... read more
