We left Zihuatanejo Saturday morning to go to Acapulco. Acapulco was Mexico's first resort town and still serves as such. We do not really enjoy resort towns; if we did we would vacation in Florida or Missouri or maybe Hawaii. We travel to Mexico to experience the culture, the history, the nuances of everyday life, to escape the rat race of home and to survive without it. And, Acapulco is just another big city like Minneapolis, Chicago, whichever, where ever. But, it does not offer much for taking in local culture, traditions, history, customs. You can shop, eat, spend time at a hotel beach/or pool. Many people enjoy this type of vacation. We find it to be unsettling. Regardless, we went to Acapulco hoping to attend a bullfight; there's some culture and history! Many people condemn ... read more

Buenos dias! Estamos aqui!! Que Magnifico!!! Yesterday, March 1st, we made it to MSP ontime, 430 in the morning. Our plane left on time, 630 in the morning. And, you guessed it, we made it to Zihuatanejo on time, 11am. We made it through immigration and customs without having to be searched, yay! We got our rental car, it was a manual transmission, Leila did a happy dance - love driving manuals. Chuck thought, oh boy. Chuck was right. Zihuatanejo is like Duluth on steroids! The foothills from the Sierra Madre come right to the water. The town is filled with steep, steep , steep, steep hilly roads that are vey, very, very narrow - Leila thought about crying, but perservered with Chucks support instead. Looking back, we made it to our hotel, probably, in record ... read more

Valentines Day, Today, marks the midway point in our winter vacation. It was a relatively short drive from Playa Azul to Zihuatanejo on Sunday. There was only one spot available at El Mangler RV Park where we had spent three or four glorious days three years ago - but what to do with Ed and Michelle. While we were down here negotiating with this campground’s proprietors, they found a lovely campsite behind a home owned by Dave and Nancy from Sand Point, Idaho. This arrangement worked out well. Dave and Nancy have lived a very interesting life, too much to go into here but the RV space behind their beautiful home was perfect for Ed and Michelle’s dog Red to run and play so it was an easy decision – they stay up there – we ... read more

We left Maruata Beach and stopped for an ill fated trip to Playa Azul. During an arduous day of driving, we had stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. Marsha and I had Shrimp Soup, which was served with the whole shrimp. We pulled out the shrimp, removed the heads and the shells and enjoyed our soup. I think I have finally learned my lesson with Shrimp. That night, we all went to a great Restaurant just down the street from the campground and pigged out on mole, chile rellenos, quesillas and beans and rice. Oh Yeah, cold beer too… It was raining all day, all night and still raining the next morning. The campground was a big mud pit, but we decided to stay rather than drive again on slick wet roads. Good thing! No ... read more

Early arrival in Acapulco. We met the rest of our tour group at our cabin, got off and found Arturo right away. my friends Steve and Barbara recommended him and he was great. We first went to fort San diego which is a great stone ediface complete with moat. The spanish built it to defend the bay and in 1776 the dutch fought for it and won. Later the spanish were able to recapture it. Beautiful view from the hill. Next was a beautiful drive past the Hollywood hills of Acapulco. Georgeous homes and we visted the peach chapel at the top of the highest hill in Aca. Built by a rich businessman in honor of his two sons who died in a plane crash. Very tall cross and beautifully simple chapel. Went thru town to ... read more

I just got back from spending 6 weeks in Acapulco. Most of July and august 2011 I found myself heading to Acapulco again. I could not wait to get back to that unique climate I missed so much. I figured that I would stay in Caleta. That is the traditional area of Acapulco made famous by Hollywood actors like the "rat pack". I really like the Caleta area for its proximity to the ocean and its beautiful rock formations. I decided to stay at a house on the ocean named the Casa del Puente. A house that was built in the 1940s in true mexican architecture. A place where I could find real tranquility. Something I needed after being out on the streets being subject to all the traffic noise. I finally made it up ... read more

David here... We got up early and both had showers and a quick breakfast of cereal and juice before jumping into a collectivo and making it to the bus station for our 09:00 bus to the coastal town of Zihuatanejo (pronounced see-what-a-nay-ho, yes the place mentioned in The Shawshank Redemption). The bus journey took 5 hours, so it gave us time to enjoy the films Reign of Fire, Sister Act and Jump In (a made for TV Disney film about skipping), all in Spanish of course, though we could follow what was happening. We arrived at 14:00 and immediately booked our tickets to Mexico City before leaving the bus station, crossing over the main road and jumping into a collectivo right into the centre of town. Our first choice hostel, Angelas Hotel, had a room free ... read more

Today we went to the Silver mining town of Taxco. It was beautiful. The houses are on the mountain and it reminds you of homes in Spain, or Italy or Greece. Absolutely stunning. But with life on the mountain comes the need to walk up that mountain and we did a lot of that today! You can get a lot of silver items for cheap in this town so it was worth all the walking. After walking up one particularly steep hill we just made a decision that the first restaurant we saw we would eat at and we did. Even the restaurant had a terrific view. We ended up in the centro where the big catedral is located and some guy, who claimed he worked for the government, wanted to give us a tour. It ... read more

Acapulco is nothing to write home about. It's kind of like a Mexican Surfers Paradise with more spring break type bars, beach hawkers, and a higher crime rate. We stayed our first night in a place called Hostel K3 which provided us with a room about the size of a standard New Zealand closet. It did, however, have air conditioning which we were very appreciative of. The next day we moved down to a Hotel near the Zocolo, just around the corner from the world famous Acapulco cliff divers. That night we walked up and watched a number of adolescents throw themselves off a 33metre cliff into a churning pool of water below. I have jumped off a number of cliffs and diving boards in my time but nothing even remotely close to 33 metres. Needless ... read more
