Day 23 - Holden to Montreal Today we completed our East Coast segment of the trip. Traveling through the northern part of Maine was beautiful but a bit barren, with towns few and far between. We made sure to stop for gas anytime we hit less than 1/2 a tank, so we don't repeat our mistake in Wyoming from 4 years ago. The one thing Maine does have is vistas: Beautiful, sweeping valleys, majestic mountains in the distance, quiet river villages. By mid morning we arrived at the beginning of Hwy 1, which reaches from Key West in Florida all the way to Fort Kent in Maine. A total of 2390 miles. We didn't travel the whole way on Hwy 1 but crossed and drove it many times. The locals call the northernmost stretch of Hwy ... read more

Montreal with a baby So, here comes a new experience. Traveling with a 2 month old surely brings a different vibe. Accomplishing 1-2 things a day is an achievement. Sitting through an hour long lunch or dinner would be a gift. It's all about how to calm your baby, so let us say - we appreciated cobblestone streets of old Montreal. Honestly, it felt like we were torturing her, but it we rolled nice and slow and it worked like a charm! For one reason or the other, our little ones falls asleep on seconds! A few things to note: - air bnb rocks especially when travelling with a baby. We stayed a couple of blocks from Notre Dam cathedral. Great location. - we planned 1 to 2 things a day. First day, we quickly visited ... read more

I am sitting here with a nice glass of Italian red wine and I have about 6 tabs open in my internet browser. I am planning my trip to Iceland - solo. Where to start? I have been wanting to go to Iceland ever since Wow Airhas announced their super cheap flights from Montreal or Toronto to Reykjavik, capital of Iceland. For under 400$ Canadian, you can fly from Montreal to Reykjavik, round trip, tax included! Why pass on an opportunity like that!? That's what I thought. I started doing some research about a couple of months ago, watching the flight prices to see if they would change, browsing the multiple blogs about travelling to Iceland and trying to gather as much truthful information as I can find. First of all, don't be tricked with Wow ... read more

Day 1 - 1er avril - Grand départ : Vendredi 1er avril, jour du grand départ ! Je suis ... read more

Jerry slept in a bit so I went down to breakfast by myself, while he finished getting ready. It has been snowing on and off today, which didn’t matter because we were only above ground for maybe a total of 15 minutes today. Spent most of our time in the museum, metro or underground. The only thing we did today was go to the Museum de Beaux Arts. It was an easy metro ride, but we really could have used the underground and walked there, hindsight is 20/20. The museum was in three separate building all connected by underground passages. The first section had a special exhibit that we did not see. We did get a pleasant surprise as there was no entry fee, for whatever reason all regular exhibits were free admission. The rest of ... read more

After wine-thirty in the room, we got ready for New Year’s Eve Dinner and toasting in the New Year. We have never been out of the country, or the city we live for that matter, on New Year’s so it would be a new experience. For the last two New Year’s Eve we have avoided Time Square like the plaque. We just have no desire to deal with the drunken crowds and cold weather, all to see the ball drop, then fight the crowds to go home. Sure when I was in my 20’s I wanted to do that, but once I grew up, I realized that there wasn’t any real fun in just standing around watching a ball drop, I can do that from the warms of my living room and watching Dick Clark’s Rocking ... read more

This would be my 2nd destination New Years trip. Last years in New York was so good I decided to make it a tradition. Coming with me this would be my girlfriend Tamara. We have been dating for 3 months and this would be our first trip together. She is a wonderful lady and we have a lot of fun together. It would also be a good test for our relationship because we would only have each other for 2 days+. I chose Montreal partly for geography and partly because the Montreal people I spoke to heavily recommending it for New Years. We would be staying at the Chateau Versailles which is a hotel located in Old Montreal. Thursday morning I found myself at Tamara's house. After a greeting with her dog Buffy we packed up ... read more

The snow storm seems to have passed and it is currently a balmy 16 degrees outside. Jerry is feeling better this morning and trying to avert the head cold. We will be spending the day in Old Town the same area as our hotel. The church and the archeological museum are on the agenda as well as one of the best boulangerie in the city. I clearly need an attitude adjustment, everything seems to be pissing me off. Traveling use to be so easy now it all just seems hard, maybe it is because we did zero pre-planning so everything has been plan as you go. Not that we don’t always go off itinerary, but we at least have a general idea of what we are going to do each day, or at least one part ... read more

I woke up around 4:30 am, as I do most every night, looked out the winter and saw nothing but white, the snow storm had begun. Later at around 7 am Jerry got up and took a few pictures of the city below. Our room has a river view, but today you wouldn’t know it is really there. We stayed in the warmth of our king size bed for about another hour, then got up to go down to our buffet breakfast. For a hotel buffet, it was actually good, Jerry even said that the breakfast potatoes were some of the best restaurant potatoes he had ever had, and that is saying a lot, since he is very persnickety when it comes to breakfast potatoes. No pictures of the food, it was just your normal breakfast ... read more
