With our clocks set back one hour to Eastern Daylight Savings time, we awoke to begin our first and only sea day of this leg of our Collector’s Voyage. My day started in the gym looking out at the expanse of water in front of us. I could see the shoreline in the far distance and can only imagine the enormity of the task for early explorers seeking to find that elusive Northwest Passage. This being Thursday, I concentrated my anaerobic workout on the legs after thirty minutes on the treadmill. The Maasdam has three machines for the legs, so I also spent some time on their crunch machine and one for the arms. Sharon was about to leave for mass when I returned to the cabin. The plan was for me to work on the ... read more

Maasdam was scheduled to dock in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island about 9:00 AM this morning, about the time we were waking up. This tour-free day for us is certainly starting out at a leisurely pace. As I checked the booty that Sharon’s raffle ticket had won in the casino the night before, I was happy to see that the T-Shirt was an XL-size, and the hat was a nice one too. That’s when I couldn’t find the baseball hat from Niagara Falls that I’d been wearing. We had to rush to get up to the Lido to get there in time for the open buffet breakfast. Sharon had her French toast and bacon and I waited quite a while in the omelet line, as the gentleman at the front ordered up not just one, but ... read more

This morning, we kindred spirits arrived in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island before 8 AM. I had managed to drag myself out of bed in time for my first work-out in the gym on the Lido Deck, and enjoyed seeing the red soil of Prince Edward Island approaching on our left. The island drew ever closer as I worked out on the treadmill with quite a few others, who were all running at a blistering pace; while, I walked along at 3.6 MPH enjoying the outside view, not minding that reception for the channel covering Wimbledon was no better here than in our cabin. We had breakfast in the dining room, and again I enjoyed the Swiss Muesli, along with the Frittata Italiano and I added some link sausage and toast. Sharon ordered one slice of ... read more

Monday morning started our first and only “sea day” on this leg of the cruise as we make the passage from Quebec City to Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. And it began with a late start, after setting the clocks ahead one hour for the next time zone, with Sharon exclaiming “Is it really eight o’clock.” The importance of 8 AM is that on sea days mass is held at… you guessed it: 8 AM! It was ten minutes before eight actually, and Sharon rushed to get herself presentable, rushing off to find about twenty others had also gotten up for mass. Every priest that we’ve had on HAL cruises has been memorable, special and even a little quirky sometimes in their own special way. Father Dan is no exception. Yesterday he told of how he ... read more

Ever since taking two hiking trips to Newfoundland (affectionately known as “The Rock” to locals) a few years ago, I vowed to explore more of the Canadian Maritime provinces, which boast stunning scenery, a fascinating brew of cultures and very warm and welcoming people. This summer I returned to this wonderful part of the world with my wife Jacqueline and our 11-year-old son Jackson. We made the long car ride across the endless forests of Maine and New Brunswick to spend a memorable sojourn on Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) and Cape Breton Island (which is part of Nova Scotia). Like many young girls, Jacqueline became enamored with the novels (and subsequent public television adaptations) of Lucy Maud Montgomery, who created the memorable heroine Anne Shirley of Green Gables. Make no mistake, the province of P.E.I. couldn’t ... read more

Another sailing day this time through the inner passage. Seems a lot of the inner passage is open sea or done at night. We do get a fair bit of time between 2 lots of land and there are numerous sightings of whales and porpoise during the day. Plenty of time spent looking out to sea or at the eyelids. Need to have our bags packed and at our door by midnight. Forms to fill in for Canadian immigration and special bag tags that identifies our disembarkation group and time. Way too much to take in after weeks of no paper work. Off to our last dinner. All the waiters are dressed with chef type hats and we are treated to a massive pass by from the entire food crew - chefs, waiters, officers, etc. All ... read more

Hi, All – It’s Monday night, Sept. 30th, and I’m writing this message for the next time we hit a WiFi connection. Right now it’s around 8:30 PM, September 30th, and we’ll be spending the night parked at the bottom of the East Point Lighthouse on the very eastern tip of Prince Edward Island. Because of Bob’s curiosity and internet explorations, tomorrow we’re heading off to a place we’d never heard of – Isles de la Madeleine, a string of islands about 100 from this lighthouse in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Tomorrow afternoon, after driving about a half hour from this lighthouse, we’ll catch the ferry for a five-hour trip to reach the main island of the Madeleine archipelago. If you want to look it up, it’s midway between the Gaspe Peninsula, ... read more

Boarded the ship - Holland America Lines - the Eurodam at around lunchtime. Some confusion when going through the customs area - when we were misdirected by one young man - several times but eventually got to where we had to be and did all the things we had to do. Dropped into our cabin and then met Ken & Noveen to show them around the important parts of the ship. Of course this meant Bar by Bar and stopping in at the Crow's Nest for our first drink..s. Later we had dinner and then stopped at the BB King band in the Queens lounge and sang and danced along with the music - was really good! The ship wasn't leaving until the next day at 4pm so we stayed up late. Today we had a ... read more

We were on the road by 06:05. We made our way to the confederation bridge and accidently went to the toll booth that took only credit cards. A 2 second transaction later and we were on our way across. I’ve heard people say that you can’t see anything from the bridge, but even in the dim light and slight fog we could see the ocean below. I’m sure it would have been pretty in the daylight. When you’re in the middle you really feel like your high up and flashes went through my mind of the possible accident sending you over the side and a hundred feet down. With my mind more intently on the road ahead, we hit land without incident. On we went, through the weather worn Appalachian mountains towards Ontario. The gps gives ... read more

It was a rainy day. It lightly sideways rained all day. But that’s ok. This is the day we set aside for my vacation. I insisted that at least one day is spent doing nothing. No driving, no sightseeing. Just sit and read a book. It would have been nice to read a book by the sea, on the rock in front of the cottage that juts out into the water even at low tide. But that would have treacherous at best today. We did pick up a couple of geocaches near the cottage in the rain and got pretty wet doing it. One we had tried yesterday but couldn’t get to it because a bunch of trees blocked our path at high tide. Today we tried at low tide and were successful, walking right out ... read more
