This year marks Thrivent's 10th year in partnership with Habitat. Amazing things happen when thirteen people with heart commit a week of their lives to help a family become home owners. The thirteen of us from Thrivent partnering with the local Habitat Affiliate, Don (the best construction manager who not only directs us but is also teaching us valuable construction skills), Travis (a local student who is studying to become a machinist), Pascal (an exchange student from Quebec here to sharpen his English speaking skills), and technical contractors doing electrical and plumbing have made some amazing progress this week. Today we finished the framing for front and back decks, finished the inside to be ready for sheet rock, and completed the roof prep to be ready for shingles. Most of us have not had much construction ... read more

It's amazing what can be accomplished with 26 hands and feet, 13 great brains and willing hearts. We started from just a wooden shell. In two days we can now see how it will become a home. The insulation team, inside wall team. roofers, skirting to prep for the siding, electricians, plumbers, doors and windows.....such a coordinated effort and all directed by our amazing construction manager Don. We hear he is the best in the Western Hemisphere having built around the world, including sky scrapers and the Toronto Sky Dome. His warm demeanor, patient heart, and willingness to field a bazillion questions has sped our progress to be ready for siding, roof shingles and prepping for sheet rock. Besides the build, we have enjoyed amazing meals and fellowship. Tonight we met Sadat, an Afghani refugee restaurant ... read more

After a full day of work on the home site, the Habitat affiliate treated us to a fantastic lobster dinner . For many of us, it was our first experience working our way through a whole lobster. Overwhelming number of "thumbs up" and left us wanting more. Mike Paulson won the award for the most enthusiastic lobster eater and earned the coveted nickname of "Lobster Man".... read more

Gary arrived 1am, Patti at 1:20pm, Bruce and Mike just arrived. The rest of the group of 13 is en route. So good to be here after flying overnight from 11pm out of Portland, Oregon. The red-eye is brutal, hardly slept on the plane. When I arrived, Monic from the Habitat Affiliate on Prince Edward Island (PEI) picked me up at the airport in the Habitat van. We picked Gary up from the Hostel he stayed at last night, and then to the Southport Hotel in Charlottetown for our overnight stay tonight. Tomorrow we head to do some sight seeing in Charlottetown, to Belfast to Rachel's Cottages where we will stay for the balance of the trip. Monday we start on the build site in Orwell. Hopefully we'll figure out how to post some pictures with ... read more

Today’s destination was Charlottetown, the capitol of Prince Edward Island. The bridge here is the Confederation Bridge and we’ve seen signs for the Birthplace of Confederation, but really had no idea what that meant. To remedy that situation, we started at Founders’ Hall. It is a multimedia history lesson framed as a time machine. I usually don’t do the audio tour things, but this was well designed. Marks on the floor showed where to stand, and it all flowed easily. While there, we learned that twenty-three representatives from Canada East, Canada West, PEI, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia met in Charlottetown in 1864 and ultimately decided to unite as one country. They, as well as representatives from Newfoundland, met again in Quebec a month later to draft a constitution. Canada as a country was officially created ... read more

Prince Edward Island has nearly 8000 caches, so I devised a drive around the island to find lots of them. I didn't count on park and grabs being down embankments into the woods or mosquitoes worse than at home or our GPSr not being very accurate. I also had planned on visiting a few things yesterday. Our day started with toast and jam from the Preserve Company (Blueberry Lemon and Very Berry Cherry). We found a few caches without too much difficulty before stopping at the Acadian Museum of Prince Edward Island. It started with a video describing their life, emigration, the forced exodus. We then walked around reading about individuals, before looking at artifacts found during archaeological digs. We took a circuitous route south (by going north to find a needed cache) to stop at ... read more

Know we are back but updating blog any ways. Had a real problem with it crashing but i think it was my I-Pad, so giving it a go here. We left Charlottetown, and drove to the ferry at the tip of Wood island. When we got there we found out one of the 2 ferries was not working and it happened to be the bigger of the two. We had stopped to tour the lighthouse that was there. It was a really great experience, they are not as tall as I thought they would be. After touring and watching the ferry come in we decided to see if we would be able to get on the four o'clock ferry, which was four hour wait. Told chances were slim but could reserve the eight o'clock one, we ... read more

Well we made it to Charoletetown, yippee :) found a nice motel just outside of the city, quiet yet close to everything. Tom saw 3 tall ships in the harbour and snapped aflew photos. Tom did enjoy taking the confederation bridge, although was a little disappointed that it was only single lane, and me was good going over not at all like the skyway. But I was kept busy with camera and video camera lol. I also paid 9:95 for a plastic drinking cup that says island girl, and got a lot of attitude from the lady in the LCBO here about paying that for a dollar store glass ( but I say whatever it says PEI, so bite me lol). We are not sure what the plans are for tomorrow, drive around PEI or take ... read more
