If it’s Tuesday, this must be Prince Edward Island I see passing by through the outside window of our Lanai Cabin. The deep reddish orange earth of the coast touching the water along the south coast of the island is unmistakable, from viewing “Anne of Green Gables” or watching DVDs from one of my favorite series “Road to Avonlea”. I spot one of the square towered lighthouses on a promontory and decide it’s time for some pictures as we make our way to port. A brisk breeze is blowing and the iron-rich soil makes colorful contrast to the many shades of green. We grab a quick bite in the Lido and make our way to Deck 3 to disembark and meet up with our tour group in the terminal at Charollottetown. Did I mention that we ... read more

De zee was ... read more

... just a continuation of our earlier blog from Maine. We crossed the border pretty late at night into ST. ANDREWS BY-THE-SEA VILLAGE. As mentioned in an earlier blog we are on our way to Prince Edward Island from Connecticut, but there is no timetable so we are literally just going with the flow. Earlier that night we found a pretty good deal on the FAIRMONT ALGONQUIN HOTEL IN ST. ANDREWS. It's a beautiful old hotel with beautiful rooms. We really liked it. Well it's just an hotel (unfortunately there is too much to see and do in general so we generally spend very little time in hotels) and the next day we were on our way again. We cruised around town in St. Andrews and were really impressed by it's coziness. Reminded us of a ... read more

Manically trying to recall to Brad the details of the first Anne of Green Gables novels, then the subsequent 7 sequels, we headed towards Prince Edward Island over the controversial Confederation Bridge. And what a bridge it is! Twelve kilometres of concrete over the Northumberland Strait, high in the air too; we were left in awe wondering how it is possible to have that kind of bridge operational in the icy cold winter. Our first introduction to the ‘potato province’ was a trip through agricultural land (ok- really the whole island is a giant potato farm!) from Summerside to the north-west part of the island. We made it as far as West Point and Cedar Dunes Provincial Park. Somehow in the years since reading Anne of Green Gables, I forgot that PEI is also almost completely ... read more

Ahh, I almost forgot the Lobster and Chardonnay story! So many months ago when we were visiting Kylee and Riley in the Okanagan, we went out for a picnic and wine tasting. We ended up at this winery called Cedar Creek. Now, I’m not a big fan of chardonnay. In fact, the taste of chardonnay tends to turn my stomach! But the Chardonnay at Cedar Creek blew my mind and I bought a bottle. Our resident sommelier suggested we save it until we reach the east coast and enjoy it with some lobster..... Long story short, we’ve been carrying the bottle of chard, tucked away in a cool corner of the car, protecting it from the blasting prairie heat or inquisitive customs inspection officers. Finally in PEI we hunted for Lobster, going into a lobster shop ... read more

We left Moncton today and headed for the Hopewell Rocks! Google it if you don't know what it is! Basically it's the only place in the world you can walk on the Ocean floor because of the quick tides. As we were walking there...which was about a 15 min hike down the paths Jen and I both had to go to the bathroom. As we approached Jen reminded me of how she hated outhouses..."It will be fine!!" I tried reassuring her. Well Jen walked in two seconds and came out saying "I can't do it!!!" HAHAH What was even funnier was that a cub scout tried using the public outhouse at the Hopewell Rocks and came out gagging and said "That's just wrong!".Lol. His mom said if a cub scout can't handle it than it must ... read more

It's a rainy miserable day but we're still heading off to visit Anne of Green Gables in Cavendish which is about a 40 min drive from downtown Charlottetown. This has always been a dream of mine to visit the quaint house that inspired many of Lucy Maud Montgomery's much beloved novlels like Anne of Green Gables. It was the first time I drove in pouring rain in my Kia Soul but it has essential things that make you feel safe like good windshield wipers and traction there were no worries at all! We arrived in Cavendish and pulled into the visitors parking lot. There were tonnes of tourists many of which were from Asian countries because over there it is part of their curriculum. They study L.M's books and read Anne of Green Gables as part ... read more

Ah, a whole day and nowhere to go! well, nowhere in the car anyway. Slept in a bit and had a nice free breakfast at the hotel and headed out for a walk to downtown Charlottetown. Very cool old buildings and houses and churches. Saw a place called Beaton's Wholesale, so we stopped in to look around (since Janet's ancestors that lived in Iris were the Beaton's). Not much there so we moved on. Well, wouldn't you know, we found a local brewery! The Gahon House Brewery. So, we stopped in for a bite to eat (and a beer or two). Yes, Patsy, the Canadian Pub Crawl continues! We liked the stout so much we bought a growler (a 64 oz. jug). It is resting comfortably in our hotel fridge. After taking it easy and lounging ... read more

Had a nice breakfast at the McDonald Country Inn and hit the road. But, first we stopped to chat with Ann Marie at the visitor center in St. Peter's Nova Scotia. We stopped there the previous day, so I feel we are now on a first name basis (plus she shares the same name as my little sister). She gave us some information on the ferry to PEI (Prince Edward Island) and off we went. We drove a little out of the way up the west coast of Cape Breton Island to enjoy some nice scenery. We then drove on to Pictou to catch the ferry and missed the 2:45 ferry by 5 minutes! But, that gave us an opportunity to walk around the docks and look at all the fishing boats. We even met a ... read more
