After leaving the ferry at North Sydney, we drove down Cape Breton, crossed the causeway, and picked up Highway 104 heading east. At Westville, we turned north and drove to Caribou where we drove aboard the MV Holiday Island. It takes about an hour and a half to make the crossing over to Wood Islands on Prince Edward Island. After leaving the ferry, we drove to Charlottetown. Charlottetown is the largest city on the island and an attractive one at that. With a population of around 60,000, it's the provincial capital of Prince Edward Island. It was named for Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III. The good king gained fame in history as being on the throne when the American colonies revolted. This led to the Revolutionary War and independence for the colonies and eventually ... read more

Prince Edward Island Driving Tour Our 2010 Driving Tour of Prince Edward Island was the perfect escape from the urbanization of Canada's East and West Coasts. There was a peaceful tranquility that washed over us when we crossed one of the world's longest bridges that connects New Brunswick to PEI, the tiniest province in Canada. The Travelling Canucks loved the charming and relaxing lifestyle on the Island, which only proved that we are getting old! Join us on our journey touring around the Gentle Island! PEI is known for its potatoes, its sienna-coloured soil and golden/white sand beaches that line its shores. Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series of books has brought its fans from around the world to visit the author's birthplace and setting for Anne Shirley's adventures that delightfully described growing up ... read more

PEI is a Canadian province consisting of an island of the same name, as well as other islands. The maritime province is the smallest in the nation in both land area and population (excluding the territories). The island has a few other names: "Garden of the Gulf" referring to the pastoral scenery and lush agricultural lands throughout the province; and "Birthplace of Confederation", referring to the Charlottetown Conference in 1864. tt is the 104th largest island in the world, and Canada's 23rd largest island. The island was named for Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (1767-1820), the fourth son of King George III and the father of Queen Victoria.... read more

Hi all! Sorry it's been awhile since last entry. Takes a bit of time which we don"t always have. We have since been to Truro NS, Halifax, Wolfville and last nite was Charlottetown PEI. I should do this more often because it is starting t o become a blur! Thank God for pictures! Halifax was beautiful. We had an awesome seafood dinner at the 5 Fishermen downtown overlooking the Celebration site. This was a huge party. Hank and I went for a long walk down the main drag. Very pretty at nite. We left Halifax the next day. On to Wolfville. Arrived in New Minas where our room was. A far cry from the Delta in Halifax, but people were great and we are having fun regardless. Ian, Paul, Hank and I took a cab into ... read more

In Which I Leave My Mark on Prince Edward Island I am volunteering on a farm that makes soap from goats milk, which sounded interesting. The family I am staying with are ... somewhat different to my previous experiences. The mother - Em - runs the soap making business, the father is a freelance homeworker, and the two children are homeschooled, and so are like precocious little adults with limited social skills. Or perhaps they're just being normal teenagers, I am ill-equipped to judge. There is also a foreign exchange student from Hong Kong living here, and two very loud chinese toddlers the family have recently adopted, that are allowed to run riot. I sense some 'modern parenting' at work here. At meal times, they do not say grace - they sing it, while everybody holds ... read more

We had been looking forward to this for a long time - a true holiday, not the crazy kind we had become used to where you stay in a different city every night. (I guess we have Dahlia to thank for that change in approach!). We had booked tickets with Anth’s frequent flyer points nearly a year ago, but had actually wanted to come since we first visited Canada in 2005. We loved it back then in Spring, but everywhere we went people told us ‘you should have been here in the Fall’. So we came in the Fall, to the eastern Atlantic provinces that we didn’t visit before; Prince Edward Island (PEI) and Nova Scotia. Unfortunately, everywhere we went in the Fall, was closed for the season! ‘You should have come in the summer’ they ... read more

We went into a tourist information centre in Nova Scotia just across the border of New Brunswick where one of the lady’s told us we should go to PEI ( Prince Edward Island ) via The Confederation Bridge as it is an experience you wouldn’t want to miss. So we jumped in the vehicle and headed towards the 12 mile long bridge. The bridge is actually the largest bridge in the world that runs over ice. It still has mixed emotions with the locals who live on the island as now it opens up their little island for everyone where prior to the bridge the only way over was via plane or car ferryl It took us over 10 minutes to cross and cost us $47 for the pleasure. Once we got to the island ... read more

Today was the big day, we were finally going to Prince Edward Island and I was so excited. I was also excited about having to pay to take a shower, NOT ! This was going to be a new experience for us but I was anxious to see how it worked. We gathered our bath buckets and quarters and we made our way on over to the bath house. We started investigating the situation and soon figured out that there was a box right outside the shower that you had to put the money into in order to get water. Once you put a quarter into the box, the water would come on and it would last for 5 minutes so every 5 minutes you had to step out and add another quarter. Let me tell ... read more

Charlottetown, capital of Prince Edward Island (PEI) is a charming little city of around 35,000 folks. PEI consists of rolling, seemingly manicured green fields, rich brown red soil and even red beaches. Anna enjoyed visiting Green Gables where Lucy Maud Montgomery drew inspiration for her famous books. In the evening we sat outside in balmy weather at a local pub, and were balladeered by a local guitar player who enjoyed playing my songs as we are of about the same vintage (21+). Kevin is an entertainer by night, remote IBM worker by day (the only one on PEI he told us). We also visited Cows, supposedly the #1 ice cream shop in Canada, if not the world. Alas the jury's out on that.... read more
