Had we known it was such a long drive from Halifax airport to Charlottetown we would never have dreamed of asking our friend Mitch to drive up to meet us and chauffeur us back down. After almost an hour and a half in the car I enquired as to how much further it was to Charlettetown and Mitch replied we were almost half way there. "Yeah, right! When are we really gonna be there?" I scoffed. "No, really. We're about half way there." "Your kidding?" "No, I'm not." He wasn't. Well, we'd look on the map and there'd barely been an inch in it. It didn't LOOK that far... My, my didn't we feel silly...and mean! Poor Mitch had driven - in the end - a round trip of 6 hours to retrieve us, after a ... read more

Off to meet Horty! I've taken the bus to Moncton where Horty will meet me (late as usual I am sure) and then head over the Confederation Bridge into Prince Edward Island mostly just to say I was there. I entertained myself by watching the Chocolate River once again and walked in the rain with all of my luggage. Still its Canada and its a wonderful place so I refuse to complain....out loud! Horty finally showed up and we went to PEI and saw some of the sights. A storm was coming in so it got dark and murky really fast but I still liked it. I can tell its a beautiful place to be in once you actually spend some sunny days there. One of my favorite phrases ever is ,"I'm a Toad" whenever I ... read more

June 19, 2006 This is an organization day, with this many days of the road it is time to clean the Bothan, shop, etc. We got to the Art Museum in the PM, a small but interesting collection. We discovered the Gahan House Brewery and, of course, had a sample. Tonight is the premier performance of Anne of Green Gables. Although most of the seats were sold out, we managed to get two balcony seats. Bob was a good sport, with his long legs bent up he managed to get through the performance, I just had to unpretzel him at the end. June 20, 2006 We biked into Charlottetown and yeah! our mail arrived. When you are on the road for a long time, little things make you happy. The University of Prince Edward Island is ... read more

Up early and on our bike over the bridge to Charlottetown we go. The Basilica of St. Dunstan had an 8:30 mass, which we attended. The basilica is known for twin gothic spires, and impressive altar and fine Italian murals. The atmosphere was formal and conservative, oh well. Charlottetown is where Canada began. In 1864 the colonial capital hosted a Charlottetown Conference, which led to the establishment of the Dominion of Canada. We visited Province House National Historic Site and saw a video recounting the conference of 1864. Charlottetown is the largest city on Prince Edward Island and the smallest Provincial Capital. On a lighter note, we took the Harbor Hippo, an amphibious vehicle the traveled through town and then into the Hillsboro River. It was a fun way to get a feel for this city. ... read more

We were up early and took a long walk along the beach before breakfast. Each beach seems to have unique features, this one has less rocks and more white sand, with the red cliffs as a backdrop and then lush green fields, just lovely. We returned to Souris harbor to see a huge sailboat that came in yesterday. It is from NJ and is used to teach women sailing skills and teamwork. While checking out the marina we noticed a ferry coming in from Madeleine. We decided to check out what is at Madeleine and is it worth a trip? Georgetown is the next stop another small harbor town. Bob met a “fisherman”, he will talk to anyone or anything. We enjoyed a nice lunch at Montague overlooking the river. Charlottetown is our destination, but we ... read more

Today we explored the trails at the National Park. Our first stop was Brackley Beach, where we came upon a school fieldtrip, where the kids were having a fun time. School will be out in another week, academic year is longer here than in the states. At Stanhope Beach we walked the nature trail “Reeds and Rushes”, well maintained and informative. Our final stop was a grand Victoria hotel Dalway-by-the-Sea, they were in the process of getting ready to open next week. I could just picture ladies in long dresses playing tennis and relaxing in the beach chairs with lemonade. Very posh. Due to the sea and erosion, the National Park is divided into basically three parts, and one needs to travel round about to get to the different sections. This brought us around St. ... read more

The folks of Prince Edward Island are extremely friendly. While biking, I stopped to read a plaque, and a woman came up and asked if she could help. Well we got to talking and I heard a lot about the island and her life. The sun was out early as we left to travel to the North Cape. This is the tip of the north/west point of the island; this wind farm generates 5% of the electricity for Prince Edward Island. The interpretative center had lots of information on one of the “windy-est” area on Prince Edward Island. We drove the scenic drive to Tignish, the start of the famous Confederation Bike Trail. We bike out for about 6 miles and then returned, the weather is warm and sunny. Mill River Provincial Park is our choice ... read more

It rained last night but just some drizzle this a.m. We are off to Summerside to bike some of the Confederation Bike Trail. This bike trail runs on the old abandoned railway, 350 kilometers of excellent rolled stone dust surface. We did a small section, but plan to do more. The weather is wonderful today. We found the infamous Bottle House. Bob having worked in a bottle corporation for his career, was fascinated by this house built of bottles! There was also a church and a building with a bar, entirely constructed of glass bottles ... read more

We made it home just before a major blizzard hit. Thank you, Belinda, for giving us a heads-up and meeting us half way with Tuck. It was so refreshing to feel the wind-blown snow on my face. I don't know how many times over the last month I had been dreaming of the sensation, given the dry 90+ heat of SE Asia. Last night was the Snow Moon. There was enough snow on the ground that the light reflecting from the sun on the full moon bouncing off the snow made interesting shadows of the bare branches. Almost enough light to read by. ... read more

I look out the window and see snow drifts while thinking that soon enough I will be broiling in the heat, in a place where people don't know about snow. There are still a few tenatious apples clinging to the tree. The sun is setting, orange against a bright blue sky. The snow on the underside of the drifts is an almost blue, flecked with the red clay blown in from the potato field across the road. Though we don't leave Canada until Jan. 10th, we bid the Island adieu on Thursday for our annual Christmas in Québec . After celebrating both our mother's birthdays early in the New Year, we driveback to Middle Ohio, Nova Scotia to drop off the dog at his buddy Byron's place.
