We decided to take a short road trip to British Columbia, a western province of Canada. Upon a friend's recommendation, we headed to the turn of the century town of Nelson. We drove from LaConner across Steven's Pass (the North Cascades Highway is still closed due to snow), and then north through Coulee City and Grand Coulee. The basalt cliffs along Banks Lake were spectacular! We then cut across the Colville Indian Reservation (on a mountain road that the GPS pretended not to recognize for several miles) and then north, this time to the Canadian border, crossing at Danville, a very small town. The US and Canadian houses were only several yards apart, but one cannot walk across the invisible border without being arrested! This was a very unpleasant start to the Canadian part of the ... read more

Hi Everyone, Wanted to update you with our discovery of a new favourite (local) vacation spot. We went for snowboarding but fell in love with Nelson's charm and scenery. Locals are super friendly and there are so many neat little boutique shops and a variety of interesting restaurants. Our favourite spot was a diner called 'The Outer Clove,' where they feature -- you guessed it -- a garlic inspired menu. All I can say is, this joint is so far off the hook it's fantastic. We went twice. Jenny had a delectable curry dish one time and a falafel wrap the next, while I had a sinfully tasty cannelloni one time and the aptly-named 'Yum Burger' the other. Best of all, Nelson had the best powder Jenny had seen yet! The snowboarding conditions at Whitewater were ... read more

I have postponed writing so many times during this current adventure due to my complete lack of commitment to spending time on the computer. A dearth of high-speed internet has certainly contributed to this less than diligent approach to recounting my travels, but I must admit that I have been more attracted to living, than writing about it. This being said, I am now in a perfectly banal suburb of Vancouver, with high-speed wireless (drool) and am finding myself reminiscing on some of the life-changing experiences fortune has delivered to me, and thought I'd might share a few here. Where to begin.... from somewhere near the beginning seems appropriate. After five days on the road, Yotam and I landed in the craziest festival in the Kootaneys; Shambhala. We entered this wonderland outside of Salmo, BC by ... read more

As I make my plans to head south, I have been asked a few times "Why are you going by train? It would be much faster to go by plane." Yes, it would be faster, but getting there fast is not what I want. Once I don my pack and head out the door, I am officially on my journey. Isn't there some kind of saying that goes..."it's not the destination that's important, it is the journey itself." After these last few years of working hard and going to school, I really crave the experience of sitting back and watching the scenery change from one end of the continent to the other. I envision the stress just dropping off with each mile that rolls by under my feet. I have travelled by plane before. It feels ... read more

Hello to all of the people in the workforce, what's it like? haha! So, where were we! We left Calgary for Waterton Lakes National Park. We arrived nice and early which allowed us to explore the town and some walks. Lots of the hikes were still snow-covered so we opted out of many of them. The one we did was only 1 foot of snow or so. We sang songs and made noise during our walk to avoid an encounter with Mr. G (aka Grizzly). Altho the forecast for the area was for 15 C, the gale force winds that blew thru the park made it rather chilly. Nonetheless, this park and village is by far one of the most beautiful places I've seen (see pics). We saw many deer and they make no notice of ... read more

I've been hanging out in Nelson, spending most of the day at the beach meeting some cool cats. Theres a festival here in about a week called Shambhala, I've heard from a lot of people that it's a really good festival so I've spent the last few days trying to wriggle my way into working there and I've had success. So for the next week I'll be volunteering out there getting the party ready, eating good food and getting a free ticket, sweet! So I'll be gone for a while, will update on how good the party was when I get back to civilization. ... read more

Hitched out of Kamloops after getting a ride to the highway early in the morning, took me 3 hours to get a ride but eventually got picked up by a cool guy who was with his wife, listened to some metal. He gave me some bad advice on how to get to Nelson and I didn't have a map so I trusted him, turned out he gave me really bad advice and I ended up having to stay the night in a town called Invermere. It was a very snooty town, apparently it's the closest town to a REALLY REALLY big ski field that just got the go ahead. I saw a poster there for this peace music evening called "Pinestock" so I went along, figured I'd meet some cool people and find somewhere to stay. ... read more
