Nelson was inderdaad gezellig. We konden ... read more

Day 66 – July. 26 Winlaw, BC (Near Nelson) Today is Tuesday, July 26. We had a change of plans and ended up going straight to Victoria before going to a farm in Winlaw BC where I’m writing this now. Tofino apparently has a bad reputation in the summer because of expensive food and $50 camping, and since we’ve been hearing this since Saskatchewan we went straight into Victoria and stayed a couple of nights. We actually played tourist for an afternoon and got lost in the city centre. Made it back to the car 20 minutes late but didn’t get a ticket. We actually spent a lot of time just looking at the city from the marina because you can see massive ships and sea planes taking off simultaneously. The busker festival was going on ... read more

As a continuation from my last blog entry, riding along the Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) trail to the so-called Mile 0 in Midway, British Columbia, then picking up its sister railway, the Columbia & Western (C&W) which runs another 175 kilometres to Castlegar in the Kootenay region of the province, and finally, a short section of the old Great Northern railway which traveled between Salmo and Nelson. Although there are very few bikers this time of the year, there were plenty of fantastic people to share the experience with along the way, resulting in the usual pleasantries and share of odd but wonderful encounters you often have while traveling. One delight greeted me on the last stretch to Midway, where a handmade replica of a caboose lies at the side of the trail, south of the ... read more

I think its time for another blog. I've been writing too many emails all with the same content, so I guess an update is due. I've been living in Nelson for 6 months now. Wow. Typing that out is scary. How time flies. But then a lot has happened since I last wrote. Most of what I dreamt about hasn't happened and stuff I never dreamed would happen has. Life has a wonderful way of keeping you on your toes like that. I had planned to work a little bit, snowboard a lot and dance as often as possible. But life had some very different lessons in store for me this winter. I think most of you know I was in a head on car collision in December (this is the reason for the blog, to ... read more

People have been bugging me for another blog ....... so here goes....... They say Nelson either accepts you and good things happen, or it chews you up and spits you out. On the day that I arrived back in Nelson ready to WWOOF I had an email sitting in my inbox offering me a job fundraising for a Natural Therapy for Huntington's Disease in Nelson. On the same day my WWOOFer hosts said they had a room coming up for rent in 3 weeks if I wanted it. A week or so later I had 2 freelance grant writing gigs for 2 really interesting projects. One is for a film that a local guy has made revealing the dirty truth behind the Canadian oil industry (White Water Black Gold, it will be released in the new ... read more

Destination Ft. Nelson... Success!!!! We made it to Ft. Nelson!!! Today was a much better day than yesterday!! We got on the road after getting breakfast at Tim Hortons. The weather was mostly rain in the morning. It was sunny off and on, but for the most part when it wasn't raining, it was snowing! We saw a lot of beautiful country today. It was more scenic than yesterday for sure!!! As you can see from the pictures, the kids have been doing a lot of sleeping when they aren't arguing and fighting with each other! Jamie and I have decided that we are going to have to put Reggie into rehab when we get to Maryland because he has to stay drugged constantly!! There was this one river that I thought would never end. It ... read more

After the Dempster Highway trip, I spent a couple of nights partying in Dawson City. Then, with hangover in full effect, I hitched back to Whitehorse. This didn't go at all smoothly, and after two lifts I was still only about 20km south of Dawson City. To improve my chances, I created a sign with the materials I had available, namely a piece of A4 and a biro. Took me half an hour to complete, and I had to abbreviate since there wasn't enough space. It was only when I had finished, and proudly surveyed my handiwork, that I realised - from the point of view of a motorist speeding past - it might look like I was attempting to start an unlikely new career as a pimp. Needless to say, I abandoned the sign. Whitehorse ... read more

On Saturday we had to go to the hospital after I spent a lovely night, shivering, then burning up, throwing up and generally just having a good time. We had discovered that Cranbrooks doctors and walk in clinics didn’t open on Saturdays or Sundays (cos people obviously don’t get sick on the weekends). So instead had to go check in at emergency where we spent 3 hours and after a few blood samples and an IV we finally got out of there. The next 2 days were spent watching movies, catching up on gossip girl and the office and sleeping in one of Cranbrooks finest motel rooms (thanks ma and pa) and eventually I was feeling better. The time finally came after spending so far all of our trip in Cranbrook to say goodbye. It was ... read more

It felt weird doing a travel blog for South America without filling in the gap between now and my last trip. The last 2-3 years have been full of mini adventures around BC and getting my diploma in as a Recreation, Fish and Wildlife Technician. ... read more
