Sharon: We're in Jasper! We rolled in (actually, cycled up) to the town of Jasper this morning (Day 6). We went extra far yesterday to make it to Snaring River campground, which to our great relief, as we were cycling down a less used mountain road as night set in, was an actual campsite. Unfortunately, despite our best attempts at being honest, we couldn't find any way to pay this morning so we're officially freeloading hippies. Things have been great so far! Highway noise is the new silence and wind is my new biggest pet peeve, as it is ALWAYS in the wrong direction. We've cycled over 400km so far (plus 10km of cheating when it was getting dark and we got a ride to the next campground near Hinton from a nice man named Larry). ... read more

We were lucky enough to have another visit from Mum this month. She was in Washington DC for a conference and decided that if she was that close to Canada she couldn't pass up another visit. Yay for us! After an eventful flight and bus trip (including a police escort), mum arrived in Jasper on Saturday morning. Jay and I had to work that weekend, which gave mum an opportunity to get such much needed rest, and then we hired a car and took off to explore the Rockies for a few days. Driving down the Icefields Parkway was so much fun. We stopped at every available layby to soak in the surroundings, including Tangle Creek Falls, Peyto Lake, Num Ti Jah, Lake Louise, Morraine Lake and Banff. Morraine Lake was probably the highlight of Day ... read more

Geo: 52.8736, -118.083Wow!! What a great day!! We started in Lake Louise where we went to the Gondola ride up the hillside behind Lake Louise. It cost $25 for the ride but only an extra $2-50 for breakfast which was a huge bonus!! After we had filled ourselves with cereal and bacon, sausages, toast etc we headed to the Chairlift. It is amazing how many young Australians are working here. There were two or three Aussies operating the chairlift and more at the top. We rode on the T-Bar rather than the enclosed gondolas. We were told there was a chance to see Grizzly bears so we kept a keen lookout. We were rewarded when half way up we saw 2 large bears out in the grassy areas foraging for food and another on the other ... read more

G'day, We went white water rafting today on the Athabasca River in Jasper. It was the best fun! It was classed as a Grade 2 which is only beginner level, but we got quite a few good rapids and got a little wet. We were lucky enough to be the only ones on that trip, so we went on the smaller 6 person raft, which apparently gets you a bit wetter than the bigger rafts. Just after we had got back, out of our wet suits and back in the bus, the heavens opened and it poured - a real fairdinkum thunderstorm with thunder and lightning and the works. We were so lucky, because it would have been a little miserable on the river if it was pouring. Anyway, it was well worth it. So, tomorrow, ... read more

Hi everybody, well I certainly haven't been doing this blog as much as I anticipated. We have had no internet access for the last 5 days, and even this connection is very slow, so we'll see how it goes. We are currently in Hinton, which is about 45 mins north of Jasper. We have been having a wonderful time. Scenery has been absolutely amazing and weather on the whole has been pretty good. The RV we rented is big and rather luxurious. Certainly big enough for us all. We travelled towards the Rocky Mountains via Hope and a orchard town called Kelowna. We then headed to Golden and Banff. Gorgeous town Banff. I imagine it would be beautiful to see in Winter. So we have done all the Lakes - Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Peyto Lake ... read more

Squawking crows and pouring rain greeted us at the crack of dawn. We stayed in our tents to see if the weather would improve but to no avail. Around mid morning we headed into check out Jasper and its shops. It was pretty tourist focused so after a while we jumped in the car and headed to Medicine Lake. I was fascinated by one of the stories I read about it. Firstly I’ll let you read the following that I grabbed from Wikipedia: Medicine lake is a geologic anomaly in the sense that it is not actually a lake but rather an area in which the Maligne River backs up and suddenly disappears underground. During the summer months during intensified meltwater runoff the lake (which during the winter months is a meandering frozen river) fills to ... read more

Happy Canada Day everyone...frequently referred to as "Canada's birthday," the occasion marks the joining of the British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces on July 1, 1867. When I broke camp this morning I had to pack everything wet. Not an issue if you can dry it out within a reasonable time. It was cooler this morning since I was at a higher elevation but very comfortable traveling especially with my Transitions textile riding jacket...well worth the investment vs. leather. Oh by the way, the electric bear fence worked as I'm still here and typing...see the photo. My dad used an electric fence for years and it seemed to work very well. Wonder how much a jolt I would get if I touched it? I ... read more

Today we got up and headed to the bus at 10:15 for our optional excursion to Maligne Lake/Spirit Island. On the way out we stopped at Maligne Canyon for a short hike and photos and then on to Maligne lake where we had lunch before the cruise. Our guide said that even the toughest bikey guys he has had on tour said he loved the cruise and thought Spirit Island was really pretty. The sky was a bit bla and weather overcast but it was still a clear day and didn't rain. The boat took us out and around spirit island and then docked where you would walk around and get some nice photos. When we got back it was time for an afternoon nap and then to dinner for Pizza. There was supposed to be ... read more

So this ended up best day of tour so far. Ok so its early days. Today we traveled out of British Columbia and into Alberta. The morning started off with an included breakfast at Denny's (Denny's became a lifesaver on my various travels around USA and Canada. Open 24 hrs - love it). The breakfast included bacon, pancakes, scrambled egg and sausage. I remember I only ate half of it but unsure if that is because I wasn't hungry or if because it was bad. We headed into Jasper with a few stops along the way. One of them was wells gray park where there is a life size statue of a moose. Let me tell you those things are huge.! Think Clydesdale horse big. If i ran into it is would breath into my face ... read more
