The hostel in Golden was awesome. The hostel in Banff was awesome. The hostel in Lake Louise was awesome. The hostel in Jasper was a hell hole. We pull up to the parking lot. Everything looks normal. We're halfway up a mountain and a decent drive into the town centre. "It's okay" we all think, "this is what budget roadtripping is all about." It's the cheapest place in town. We unload our stuff and make our way around the back of the building. Things are broken down, it looks a little rough. Gone are the manicured lawns, flower pots, and updated buildings of hostels past. We open a creaky screen door and stand inside on a dark and musty porch, waiting to check in. Sonja's face starts to fall. The grimace sets in. She mutters "Uh, ... read more

Well today was spent around the vicinity of Jasper and after sleeping in, I went to Bears Paw bakery for a fresh Apple Danish and coffee. Danish was superb, the coffee not so. This place is very popular with locals and there are 2 branches only 3 blocks from each other! I made my way to the site of the Jasper Tramway and contemplated going up but the Aussie working there advised me not to as the clouds were rolling in and I wouldn't be able to see much. I actually got a decent view of Jasper township from the base station. Next I decided to check out Fairmont Jasper Lodge and saw that it was a rich person's bungalow accommodation. Lots of older wealthy people was all I saw and it was certainly quiet and ... read more

So I have arrived in Jasper, a much smaller and less touristy town than Banff. Jasper township is the hub for the Jasper national park which seems a little out of the way for most tourists who come out to Banff from Calgary and disappear back out of the rockies. Jasper is only about 250km from Banff and it is a very rewarding drive up the Icefields Parkway. There are many spectacular scenic viewpoints and mini hikes along the way. I have to say that there are much more vantage points if you drove south from Jasper to Banff. The majority of the lakes are still frozen and won't be melted for at least another 2 months. So if you like seeing water instead of ice, then July and August would be the time to visit ... read more

Like the train to Jasper, the schedule is designed so that the most spectacular part is traveled in the day. So this time we left in the afternoon. And I was gratefully assigned a seat to myself, as were most other single travelers in the car. There was also an incredible amount of leg room between the seats. But no amount of leg room can make for a comfortable night’s sleep. The night was spent at uncomfortable angles, trying to squeeze into the small space created by two seats, and mentally inventorying all the places that would hurt the next morning. I focused on reminding myself that I would soon be home and in my own bed. Traveling in economy was quieter than I imagined. I and most other travelers occupied ourselves with taking pictures from ... read more

75% off Via rail tickets. Who could resist? I drove through the Rockies in the fall of 2008; while seeing the Rockies in all four season is on my wish list this trip was entirely about the rail journey. But, having driven from Vancouver to Jasper and Banff to Vancouver, I departed well aware that this isn’t the iconic route - only traveled by the much more expensive Rocky Mountaineer. The train from Vancouver to Jasper leaves in the evening, but doesn’t seen to move beyond Kamloops (~300 km from Vancouver) until the next morning. On the trip to Jasper, I bought a cabin for 1 ticket as the economy seats were sold out. My first impression of the single sleeper cabin was that it would be an isolated journey. So I happily took the first ... read more

Part 3 Before I begin... it's been brought to my attention that I am writing far too much in this blog about the minute details. So, I am going to try and trim a bit of the fat and give you just the chewy middle bits, instead. We'll see how well I do? The final day at Miette Hot Springs Resort started with a late snooze, a quick dip in the swimming pool of love with six-other travelers all in their 70's and then we checked out at the front desk. Two-hundred and ten dollars later, we were off to the Soft Rock Cafe in Jasper to eat breakfast and use the internet. We'd been off the internet for three-glorious days but needed a bit of reality check, to be certain that life was going ... read more

DAY 55, MAY 8 I finally am able to get to a computer to add to the travel blog and catch up with e-mails. We left Golden, British Columbia and had the most magnificient drive to Banff. We drove through Kicking Horse Pass and into Yoho National Park and our first stop took us to Emerald Lake. In the summer this lake is the most wonderful shade of emerald green hence it's name. But in early May it is still snow and ice covered. We had a wonderful lunch over looking the lake and the magestic mountains surrounding the lake. We wanted to get into Moraine Lake but the roads were still closed with snow. Every turn in the road took our breath away. The next vista seemed more beautiful than the last. What a beautiful ... read more

... read more
