DAY 4: Friday 16th April 2010 - EDMONTON / JASPER (by Darryl) We were up late last night packing and finishing arrangements, finally hitting the hay around 1:30 and had to rise at 5:15 to be ready for the taxi - so only had 3.5 hours sleep! It was a beautiful clear day but quite cold - still, quite refreshing though as I couldn’t seem to get the temperature down to a comfortable level in the hotel room! Got chatting to an interesting Negro guy in the train station - who came from Montreal and looked curious with his great height, graying dreadlocks & long beard, with large round dark rimmed glasses. Travelling by train was brilliant, with lots of space and the gentle rocking motion - after a few photos of typical Edmonton rural scenery ... read more

So, after 3 months into our working holiday in Banff, we decided to rent a car and take some time out to drive one of the most scenic drives in the world - The Icefields Parkway. The Icefields Parkway is 230 kms of pristine scenery, even though we went in August which is the height of summer there were still some mountains which were dotted with white, little pockets where glaciers have formed over many years. Ordinarily, it would only take about 3 hours for the drive, but we took our time and spent 9 hours on the road. We stopped at several waterfalls and canyons and hiked around admiring the scenery, flora and fauna. Our first pit stop was the Bow Lake.(pictured to the right) Then after a few pictures we headed to our next ... read more

Day 119 (Monday 17/08/09, NJJ) Both had a good snug, bug, rug sleep. Saw fantastic scenery once again on the way to Maligne Lake. The lake was pretty but we were disappointed that the sun wasn't right for taking photographs - there is something wrong with us that we can't just appreciate the beauty of the experience in the moment. We walked around the lake shore and saw a lovely wild deer. We were desperate to see bears but at the same time for safety sake were hoping that we wouldn't and especially not near any of our campsites. Drove back to Jasper. Met Laura (aka Fish, from our Africa In Focus tour) at 'The Other Bear Paw' cafe. We chatted there for an hour or so before moving on to 'Earls' for food - had ... read more

Day 118 (Sunday 16/08/09, NJJ) Started our drive to Jasper. Spent the majority of the day driving along the Icefield Parkway and stopping at various viewpoints along the way. The scenery was big and very impressive. Checked into the Whistlers National Park campground around 3.30pm. Tent up then drove into Jasper town. Had a drink and baguette at a bakery then took a walk around town. Back to camp in the evening. Pasta dinner. Shower. Bed. ... read more

This morning we watched a number of trains pass our hotel before we headed to the Jasper tramway. We spent most of the day at the top of the mountain after taking the 7 minute tramway ride. It is the highest and longest aerial tramway in Canada. We saw 1 marmot, watched clouds rise up and over us on the mountain, and got some glimpses of the town of Jasper, the surrounding mountains, and a freight train leaving the station in Jasper. While hanging out at the station waiting for our train, we took some shots of the trains in the yard. We board the train tonight, so it may be some time before we are able to post again. Hoping to get access in Winnepeg evening of July 12.... read more

Geo: 52.8736, -118.083Well, we made it to Jasper National Park. What a beautiful drive. Snow capped peaks on either side of the road. We stopped at the Colombia Icefields visitors center and decided to come back another day to do the glacier trip. We did a little hiking on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday it was a sunny day, so we decided to go to the Athabasca Glacier and do the bus tour out onto it. It was really cool! Not cold, even though we were standing on ice a thousand feet thick. We also stopped at Athabasca Falls and Sunwapta Falls. We saw more elk and bears, too. On Monday, we hiked around Lake Annette and had a picinic lunch. We saw 2 eagles in the tress right above us. They both took off across the ... read more

Jasper, Alberta, Canada Today was a declared laundry day so we took a very leisurely morning, went for a late breakfast, and dealt with the tasks at hand. We purchased laundry supplies at the local grocery store, continuing to be surprised at the cost of things here in Canada. We met some people from Switzerland who had rented an RV. They were having a wonderful time but felt paying the price they were paying for an RV site was not fair given a train came through every half hour through the night. So, they too, felt pricing in Canada was high. We finished the laundry and repacked clean clothes. We had a couple of highlights after the laundry was done. First, we stopped at a local pub and had some very interesting conversation with the bartender ... read more

Well, the summer is over. It's hard to believe since we never really felt like it got started! We can't complain too much - we've still got to do lots of great things these last few months, but I think there were maybe two weeks so far this year where I haven't had to wear a jumper! It's not right! So to update on the last few months, here are our highlights: McGilivray Slabs Our first multi-pitch climb. Jamie was so hyped up, I was so nervous, but we made it to the top! All four pitches! Exciting enough for it to have its very own blog. Ha Ling Peak So this mountain totally kicked our ass, but we learnt a lot from it. It was 10 pitches, ranging from 5.5 to 5.6, but for some ... read more
