We have a red eye flight back tonight so we still had some time today. The Museum of History and Industry was just around the block from our hotel and today Microsoft was hosting an event there which had the museum open free to the public. Paul Allen and Bill Gates of Microsoft fame made this museum a reality. All types of history items about Seattle and a quirky exhibit on Chocolate (Mary Ann's personal favorite) on 2 filled floors with a lot of interactive exhibits. Walked along the waterfront and decided to ride the Great Wheel during the day to watch the activity on the bay. Navy vessels, pleasure boats, sailboats, kayaks, ferries, container ships, and Coast Guard vessels were all out on the water and again we watched the Blue Angels fly overhead. Fairwell ... read more

The boys kicked off the day with their first attempt at paddle boarding on Lake Union just across from our hotel. Sean caught on first and then Drew got his legs under him. Dean gave it a try but you really need to have limber knees to manuever on one of these things. Great weather and conditions on the lake. They each enjoyed their maiden voyage. We've seen a lot of Seattle over the last 2 weeks but we decided that taking a Duck Tour that would also go out on Lake Union would be fun. So we did and we had a great tour guide and we had a lot of fun. Boys capped off our last night in Seattle with a swim at the pool. And we witnessed a beautiful sunset over Lake Union ... read more

Started the day off at the Space Needle climbing 520 ft to the top in an elevator. Skies were bright and clear so many great views. Blue Angels gave us a real show with a 4 team formation and a 2 team formation buzzing near us for a long time. Then headed over to the Chihuly Exhibit which is an incredible array of blown glass sculptures - hard to imagine the skill and talent required to make these. Headed to an Underground Tour in the Pioneer Square area to see the city that lived below the streets for a time after the great fire in the 1880s - creepy and cool at the same time. Topped the day off with a night visit to the Space Needle to see the beautiful lights of the city and ... read more

As it turns out today started Seafair in Seattle which includes Navy vessels at the harbor and Marine equipment at the Museum of Flight. The Museum of Flight is on Boeing Field and includes an incredible number of exhibits from the Wright Brothers to World War I and II to Air Force One and a space shuttle training vehicle. The Marine equipment included tanks, helicopters, and a special showing by the Blue Angels. At sunset we headed back to town and the harbor to go sea kayaking in Elliot Bay. We got to maneuver around 2 Navy vessels and headed north toward the large grain silos along the shore. We watched the sun set over the Olympic Mountains and then cast an orange glow over Seattle and Mt Rainier. Really a great day to be out ... read more

We stayed in town today to do a couple of our City Pass tours. Headed out on the Argosy cruise of the harbor seeing the waterfront area, learning a bit more about the history of cruise ship tourism which is relatively new to Seattle, the 1962 World Fair which brought the Space Needle to life, the massive amount of grain that is exported from this area to the Pacific, the Coast Guard and Navy presence, the massive ferry system which can take up to 2000 cars each way to Bainbridge Island, and the advent of the Pikes Place Market when produce prices were soaring. After our boat tour we headed to the Seattle Aquarium where they had many varieties of fish, jellyfish, squid, sharks, seals, sea otters, and the cute puffin. Boys went for a swim ... read more

First time for us to explore Bainbridge Island. Took the ferry from Seattle - about 30 minute ride in a large car ferry. We decided that we would do some biking while we were there and rented bikes as soon as we got off of the ferry. With our map and advice from the bike store we headed out. This is not a trip for the non-bicyclist. There are many hills, curves, and you have to ride with traffic. The first 9 miles weren't too bad and we got to see great views of Mt Rainier and some beautiful homes. Stopped at the Treehouse Cafe for lunch and then headed off for another 8 miles. This part of the trip had more hills than we anticipated but we all made it. We only got to see ... read more

Today we traveled nearly 400 miles round trip to see both Mt St Helens and Mt Rainier. We traveled 36 miles over the winding Routes 25 and 99 to the Windy Ridge lookout. Not for the faint of heart. Mt St Helens peak is just about 2.5 miles from the lookout and there are great views of Spirit Lake along the route. After 30 years you can still see the path taken by the blast as the trees fell in the direction they were blown. We got to the lookout in time to hear a Park Ranger talk about the events leading up to the blast in 1980 and the transformation since that time. An incredible story and an incredible sight. We headed back down the mountain and north to the west entrance of Mt Rainier ... read more

Todays adventure was heading south to Mt Rainier - a sleepy volcano about 70 miles south of Seattle. We went far enough into the park to get a great view of the snow covered mountain peak and then headed back out of the park to catch our train trip and BBQ on the Mt Rainier Scenic RR. Beautiful sunny day with just enough breeze. The RR trip was a bit different than the one we took with them 10 years ago ending at a different spot with food, music, some train engines and other units to walk around, and a mock up of a logging camp. Boys topped the day with swimming in the pool.... read more

We took the Amtrak Coast Starlight train from Seattle to Portland, OR today. This train goes from Vancouver, B.C. to California which includes bi-level coaches and sleeping cars if you are making the journey to CA. Travel speeds are slow compared to the Northeast Corridor. The scenery along the coast was beautiful and we crossed over the Columbia River along the way. Both Union Stations were quite pretty and very clean as compared to what we are used to on the East Coast. We've not been to Portland before and we were pleasantly surprised at the vibrance of the town. We took one of those hop on hop off trolleys for a 2 hour tour of the town, the expansive parks, and the waterfront area where there was a Brewfest event. On the way back to ... read more

Sean has truly enjoyed the last 2 days filled with baseball. Today we did a tour of Safeco field in the morning seeing all of the behind the scenes stuff including the press box, the owners box, and the field. After the tour we headed back into town to the EMP (Experience Music Project) Museum - wow. This is really an eclectic place - Jimi Hendrix tribute, Nirvana tribute, Sci Fi and Horror film tributes, an enormous tower of guitars, an enormous screen showing all sorts of music videos and highlights, and a floor where you can experiment with instruments, vocals, and mixing music. And the topper for the day was our second baseball game - Mariners vs. Orioles with an unfortunate loss of 4-0. Sean got Chris Davis of the Orioles to throw him a ... read more
