After a long train ride from Trondheim, we finally arrived in Oslo late Monday night. We managed to find a hotel for the night, but had to get up early the next morning to find another hotel for the rest of the week since so many of the local hotels didn’t have rooms available on Wednesday night. While Jill & I repacked our things, Keith and Ben scouted out the city for a way to make the American laptop plug work in Norway (the adapter we brought with us was only for 2 prong plugs). We got checked into our home for the next few days, Hotel Savoy, then headed out for a tour of Oslo while Keith worked on his presentation for the JavaZone conference on Thursday. Jill, Ben, and I walked along Karl Johans ... read more

“Its like Iraq; no war,…but war….” Yes, that’s right, we are in the Republic of Makedonija (the ‘Former Yugoslav’ one, though officially that title doesn’t exist inside the country…) - to the west of Bulgaria and therefore nowhere near Turkey or Istanbul! Home of the second best flag in Europe. Provocatively Bulgarians regard this place as ‘Western Bulgaria’ so no tour of Bulgaria would have seemed complete without coming here, also we had to get a package sent somewhere and Poste Restante doesn’t seem to exist in Bulgaria so Skopje seemed like a good bet. Confounded by a lack of roads and armed Albanian rebels we have finally made it to Ohrid, on the shores of the lake by the same name, a beautiful city and former capital of the old Bulgarian kingdom, though also the ... read more

I arrived a week ago today and have already decided that I'm going o try to move out of my NHS accommodations. Not because I don't like only being able to take a bath or the beautiful paper thin, dark brown carpet, but because I'll have to be out within 3 months anyway so I might as well go ahead and do it now. I signed my contract with the housing people yesterday and they informed me that it was in fact NOT sorted that I remain there for the year like Sheila, my recruiter lady, told me it was. Argh!!!!!! I am going to look for a room in a place called Bush Hill Park. (The borough of Enfield is made up of many neighborhoods: Enfield Town, Winchmore Hill, Freezywater, Ponder's End, Hadley Wood, Southgate, ... read more

ahhhhhhh! i am soooo hot right now. and sooo sunburned. my feet are falling off of my ankles and i am very tired. I've been walking around rome since 8:00 this morning. (its 5 right now). so what is that? like 9 hours walking around in the very hot sun. ouch. I dont even remember anything that davide and francesco told us. i couldnt concentrate on anything but the agonizing heat and tiredness. This morning we woke up and went to the Capitoline museum, the one with the marcus aurelius statue in the middle of the piazza. Then davide took us around the forum. lots and lots of old stuff i'm not interested in going into right now. The forum is a big place. i can only remember a little bit of this morning anyway. jeez. ... read more

Abends bin ich ... read more

Salut tout le monde! Well this is one tired and stressed out girl. This is a HARD program. This week has been a mix of work and play that was really tough. Monday I had an exam in my language class, which felt fine but took a bunch of time to prep for because it was on all the little things (there are so many little things!!!!). Tuesday I had a paper and then Wednesday I had to read 60 some odd pages by Foucault on Nietzsche, Freud, and Marx. Fun? We had a seminar on the Foucault packet, which was amazing and was the beginning of one of my classes The Theory and Method of Critical Studies. We are meeting in this seminar weekly until courses actually begin the second week of October. I was ... read more

hey everyone!! i'm finally able to update. i tried in italy twice. the first time, the page wouldn't load and the second time it wouldn't recognize the @ sign on the foreign keyboard. but, i am staying at a hostel that has a US keyboard. my back hurts from carrying my pack, which we decided to name (my packs name is jerome) since they were the weight of midgets. i have blisters on my feet, bug bites EVERYWHERE, and sunburn, but i couldn't be having more fun!! so...so much has happened since i left a little less than a week ago. because sarah (the friend i am traveling with) and i are crazy, we decided as soon as we landed at rome that we were going to take a train directly down to naples so we ... read more

today i endured 8 gristling hours of sight seeing. this is a lot tougher than it sounds. i'm sure i walked well over 10 miles. that both astounds me and makes me feel proud of myself. man, i'm hardcore. so i saw the forum, the capitoline hill, the palantine hill, the circus maximus, the coleseo , and a lot of other stuff. it was pretty hot, and all the pale kids got sunburns. thankfully, i fake-baked hardcore style last spring, and i've still got enough tan to prevent any sort of skin injury . eh, i'm afraid this entry will not be very lively. i'm soo tired. last night i made dinner again. i cooked some stuffed pasta stuff, and homemade mashed potatoes and deviled eggs. this was my first time making the second two things, ... read more

I have been here for 2 weeks and have fallen in love with the Spanish way of life. Madird is such a beautiful city with plenty of galleries, museums and other interesting places to visit. The Museo del Prado for example is the art gallery where you can admire the works of Goya and El Greco to name but two. The city is vibrant and great for young people. There are several parks where you can hang out,or if thats not your scene then there are plenty of coffee shops and the like where you can watch the world go by and chat with friends. At night the city really comes to life. The madrilenos, like vampires, are creatures of the night. They pack into bares and discotecas, which incidentally stay open until 5 or 6am!! ... read more

i was told that seville is the ole capital of spain - and i reckon they're right!! it's a pretty cool place. i'll go back to granada though - that was pretty good too. we did end up getting to the alhambra - much easier than we thought it would be. we got up at 7ish and wandered up to stand in line to get in early. we got up there at 8ish and only had to wait for 20 mins before we were in!! much better than expected. we'd heard horror stories of people having to wait for 4 hours, then being told that the palace had already taken the maximum capacity for the day. lucky that didn't happen to us. well.... the alhambra is an amazing building. it is soooo intricately carved - it's ... read more
