Bar Hopping in La Ciudad Dorada Europe » Spain » Salamanca By Addy and JaneApril 27th 2007Adam and Jane So the plan was to head to Lisbon, Portugal from Sevilla. As many travellers can relate to, sometimes when you are relying on public transport, things often do not go to plan. But these little detours quite often reveal a place that will pleasantly suprise you, and Salamanca was one of these places. It is a truly beautiful city, and thanks to the huge university is home to many great bars and is always buzzing. One of the highlights for me (suprise, suprise) was visiting the Cathedral Nuevo, finished in 1733 and took 220 years to build. I am sometimes a li... read more

UntitledAndrea Istanbul! I love the Grand Bazaar! So many things to see, bargain, and buy. I wandered the city with Ryan looking for outfits for a wedding. Yup, we did a mock wedding. Everyone got a role. I had to look for a mother of the bride dress, and did I find one? You should see it! Pictures to come... Bought some apple tea and turkish delight and not much else. The apple tea is amazing and the turkish delight has gone AWOL. Hmmm... Everyone there would just yell out Aussie? Kiwi? as it seems everyone who went to Gallipoli then goes to Istanbul. I just quit saying no after awhile. There were so many entrances and street type passages that you never knew where you had been and hadn't. A lot of the places sold ... read more

Europe April 27th 2007

I just wanted to start out by giving an overview of places I have been: Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas with roots in Afghanistan and Germany. Where have I gone? A few trips to Germany to visit aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents with travels in the car and train to France, Austria, and Venice, Italy. It is always an adventure to be driving in a country in which no one in the car knows the language or how to get back to familiarity. But the fun in travel is not knowing what will happen next! A long trip road trip to Canada from San Antonio with my 4 siblings and mom was definitely a memorable experience. I certainly learned a lot of patience being in the car for 3 days. Toronto was an ... read more

Swiss Pics Europe » Switzerland By StaceySchieldApril 27th 2007I can't say how beautiful this place is so why don't I just show you! Too bad the camera doesn't do the place justice but it's the best I can do. All together I spent a week running around this wonderful country and each time I thought, wow that is the amazing, I would turn around and be blown away again. I got to see so many places and loved all of them (except Zurich)! I leave Lucern today for Munich to start my next tour. Brett and I will have to come back to Switzerland in the near future, it is just to stunning to miss. Love you and miss you, Stacey... read more

Finally, getting to my Athens trip. Even if the blog is not that interesting, I think you find the pictures amazing! I have no second doubts about going to Athens, but I must say, I was a little disappointed with it. I had a great time and had perfect weather, but was surprised by how "desertist" it was. I really thought it was going to be plush and green. Now it was not as desert as Cairo, but just a lot of dust, dirt and sand. But with that said, I had a great time and really enjoyed my visit. If you just want to see Athens, four or five days is almost perfect unless you want to get into all of the facts and details. As for me, four days worked out perfectly and ... read more

Like a bunch of cattle, thats how the trainride here felt... Well Im here in Galway now, in a hostel again but this hostel seems so much better than Dublin! For one I have my own private bathroom which is always a plus, also my room is on the 4th floor so should be much quieter, and this hostel has a lift!! Half the hotels.B&B's. guesthouses I've stayed in havent had lifts so that was a pleasant surprise! Only downside is you cant drink the water here in Galway, major scandal and major problems with the water but its not too bad, all the shops are selling bottles of water halfprice so its not too bad.. Train ride to Galway was a nightmare! HAd to perch on my suitcase for 2hours, thats how busy the train ... read more

Anyways we actually managed to get out of Surrey the other day. (more shock and horror). And wait... Both Tyson and I together (yet again more shock and horror - please don't mind my sarcasm). Right so on the 25th (and yes I did take a momment to remember Anzac day -unfortuntately I couldn't get to a service but I did spare a momment to remember). Now back to our journey out of Surrey. We went to Tooting in London in order to have an appointment to get our National Insurance Number. As I understand it it's kind of like a combined tax file number and medicare number all in one. But just to make things more difficult ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Oxfordshire » Oxford April 27th 2007

Oxford as i have said previously is a fantastic little city. in the 5 days we have been here we have explored a fair bit of the city and done some very "oxford" activities indeed. as you would expect, oxford is full of history dating back a very long way (11-1200's i think, correct me if i'm wrong Chris) throughout the centuries many famous names have studied at the various colleges within the university; Bill Clinton, Bob Hawke, Tony Blaire, the list goes on. Wednesday: we visited Blenheim Palace today: the birthplace of Churchill and the home of the Duke of Marlborough. this is by far the most impressive building and place i have seen so far. it is enormous and stunning. words can't describe how amazing this place is. Thursday: The three of us trekked ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona April 27th 2007

I get the impression that those charged with the administration of Barcelona care very much about the image of this city. The spotlight has been on this city since it held the Olympic Games in 1992 and it continues to rank highly in the many lists of Europe’s most livable cities. The local police (Mossos) seem to be around every corner and unlike the police I encountered previously in Andalucía these guys seem very very friendly, perhaps not as friendly as the French policewoman last weekend who booked my brother for speeding however you don’t feel threatened by these officers (which isn’t always the case) Food and drink play an important role in the social life of Barceloni. Whether it’s a café solo or café con leche in the morning or a glass of vino ... read more

The weather was showery all day but undaunted we went on one of the walks recommended by the campsite. We needed to do a fair amount of road work but were able to experience some of the many mountain tracks in this area. We also passed through the Dom Jesus (the stations of the cross) at Quintâo and the fascinating cobbled street village of Parelas with its vine trellis covered cobbled streets and grain stores called espigueiros. In the afternoon we got lost on an overgrown path and had to retrace our steps and return to campsite via the road. ... read more
