Who'd have believed I'd use that joke?? Okay, so I didn't believe it either. Estonia. How do I describe it? It's.....odd. It's an Eastern European country trying desperately to haul itself out of the post-Communist malaise and into Scandinavia. Tallinn is a city that is obviously developing quickly and there is clearly a great deal of wealth making it's way into the pockets of the locals. Despite this and the removal of most of the obvious monuments to Communism some parts of the city still feel as if they are still within the border of the Soviet nation. I think some of the people think they're still there too. I took a great deal of pleasure in seeing more than a couple of Trabants still cruising around the city! Brilliant! Estonia has really had something ... read more

Hi all, welcome to my travel blog! I have decided that this is the easiest way to keep everyone informed on what I'm up to over the three and a half months that I'm away. Not only will I be making diary entries but I'll upload photos as and when I can. Route I depart from Heathrow on Sunday 29th April and fly to LA for a brief stopover, then it's on to the Cook Islands, where I will stay for eleven nights. Next is Fiji for 2 weeks, then New Zealand for 3 weeks, followed by Australia for 7.5 weeks. Hong Kong is our final destiation and I arrive back in the UK on the 12th August. Right, that's all for now, my next update will be from somewhere hot and sunny! ... read more

We met up for breakfast in the hotel and then started our drive East to go to the Ballymaloe Cookery School, but we kept getting lost along the way. We didn't have an address, so our GPS unit wasn't too helpful. We made a turn a bit too early and had to go around a huge block again in rush hour traffic. Made a second turn too early because the GPS unit seemed to be a bit delayed when updating on our exact position. Then we realized it was sending us in the opposite direction of where we wanted to go, and found that the city we really wanted to go to was Midleton, not Middleton. Who knows where we'd have ended up. Middleton, I guess. I just don't know where exactly that would have been. ... read more

I am a bit behind on my blog entries, so I will just give a briefing of the games from two weeks ago. We won the first game against Vaureal 11-1; the game was ended after five innings because of the 10-run slaughter rule. I had a no-hitter going through the five innings, so I guess you could say I threw a complete-game no-hitter. The first time I have ever done that. Because of the pitching rules for foreigners in the French League that say you can throw up to half of the innings for your team on a given day, I still had two innings of eligibility for the second game. I ended up pitching the seventh and last inning of the second game, and we scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh ... read more

This past weekend we played Cherburg, one of the stronger teams in our division. They have three Canadians, all good players, a pitcher, a shortstop, and a second-baseman. In our first game we were completely shut down by their pitcher; he struck out nine batters and almost all of the rest he made us hit to second or short. I pitched the first game; we lost 2-0, their two runs coming in the 4th inning on no hits and three errors. The second game we lost 5-1. Our pitcher for the second game pitched very well, recording 9 strikeouts in seven innings. These two losses bring our record to 5-3, third place in our division. During the first game I was on second base during a timeout in the action and the other team’s shortstop ... read more

Emma had a need to get her new passport quickly, so decided to take the Thursday off work and go into Liverpool to get this. Having pre-booked an appointment she headed off early, and I had a more lazy get-up - found the train station by myself all right, and enjoyed chilling out on the train, enjoying the view… vaguely noticing what at first site appeared to be a Portaloo, then I realised was Dr Who’s telephone box as I headed for Manchester Oxford Road for change of trains! There’s so much work going on in Liverpool I got slightly confused as to where I was, but then got my bearings and headed off to meet Emma - unfortunately we’d marked different places to meet on our maps, but after that slight hiccup (hurray for mobile ... read more

Well here it is...our return to the real world. Adam has now started work at Leeds University and is loving being back in the lab. His work colleagues are very friendly and have been welcoming which has been a lovely bonus. Meanwhile, I myself have started work too! After a total of seven sleeps in Leeds. I’ve whisked myself off to Scotland to take a six week locum in an acute stroke unit. I’m working at a small district hospital in Alexandria which is 40 minutes west of Glasgow. I must confess it is quite sobering to be returning to work after the amazing break we’ve had, not to mention trying to muddle my way through a foreign health system! But having been here a few weeks now, I’m beginning to get the hang of ... read more

day3/Easter monday evening we arrived late at Odessa bus station - had no money and no idea where we were heading (didn't have adress of youth hostel where we wanted to stay on us - yes, not ideal. my fault for not printing it) - first thing we did after getting of the bus and picking up the luggage was trying to find a working cash machine - found one inside the bus station, one that worked (even with foreign bank cards - lucky us!!) - not-completely-hopeless me had decided (after looking on Odessa map in the Eastern European Lonely Planet) to tell taxi driver to drive us to a point in the centre from which 3 hotels wouldn't be far - when we got to that point it was around 11.30 - we paid ... read more

Europe » Lithuania » Vilnius April 26th 2007

26 April 2007. Started out the day walking around Vilnius on some of the other main boulevards we missed on Wednesday. The morning light on Cathedral Square was auspicious and lasted throughout the day. I was intrigued by St. Helena atop the cathedral and can’t recall many other cathedrals topped with a female figure other than perhaps Mary herself. Now to figure out what St. Helena’s claim to fame was…. We had a coffee on Gedimino prospecktas across from the National Drama Theatre with its dramatic sculpture of the three muses overlooking the theatre entrance. We also stopped at a cool record (and some compact discs) jazz and classical music shop called Thelonious (www.thelonious.lt). The basement door was locked, but the owner quickly opened it and was clearly excited to tell us about his favorite ... read more
