It was market day in St-Jean so we had a walk around and bought cheese and vegetables from some of the local farmers’ stalls. Then we headed into the Pyrenees and the van crossed its first mountain pass, the Ibaneta at 1045m into Spain. Following which we drove west via Pampona and stopped for the night at Burgos, which we plan to explore tomorrow. ... read more

We have to apologise for the delay in getting the latest blogs to you all. Its been near impossible to find WIFI internet, or any internet for that matter in Italy, and therefore we have not been able to upload the photos etc. Following from the hussle and bussle of Rome we were greatly looking forward to the change of pace of Tuscany. Reaching the countryside, it was almost an instant feeling of relaxation. The scenery was simply beautiful. Our purpose for our visit to Tuscany was that tomorrow morning we would be going on a hot air balloon ride. We were only going to be in Tuscany for one night due to our hectic schedule, so we figured what better what to see the countryside, and see much of Tuscany in a short period ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville April 23rd 2007

We arrived in Sevilla in anticipation of experiencing the Feria de Abril. While we had heard much about the colour and flair of the city and the festival, it soon became apparent that the festival was not really a tourist event. Like one travel writer describes it "(the festival) is like a thousand private parties that you are not invited to". Nonetheless it was great to be a spectator at times and just take in the granduer of the spectacle. Sevillians love to dress up, and all through the streets of Sevilla were women dressed in their finest undertaking the most mundane of activities. I felt a little uncomfortable staring at times, until I realised that perhaps that was the basis of the event, and indeed the entire city...to parade. Sevilla is a busy, vibrant ... read more

Geo: 48.8567, 2.35099So, this isn't a terribly exciting entry for anyone except us, but it's the beginning of the trip, so here 'tis. After MUCH research, we found an itinerary that matches our needs exactly (into Paris, out of London), for the comparatively reasonable price of $822 r/t. I've only ever flown in shoulder or low season (when I was paying for it, anyway), so this was more than I was hoping to pay, but less than the same itinerary when I checked the day after we bought it.We're out on Air Canada, via Montreal, and back on American, via O'Hare. I had to call the airline directly, as I could find the fares online, but couldn't get the system to actually book it for me. So, the $10 per person "talk-to-a-real-live-person" fee didn't seem too bad, ... read more

Geo: 52.3738, 4.89095Woke up and grabbed a hot chocolate before heading to the grocery store. I gotta admit - I just like going to grocery stores when I travel. They had a self-serve bread slicer - for some strange reason I found this interesting. Perhaps it was the lack of nutrients the past few days. Tto rectify this, I bought a bottle of orange/kiwi juice and coconut yogurt for now and a Chimay beer for the train ride to Amsterdam. Ate the yogurt back at the hostel with some leftover trail mix from a recent Montana ski trip. The coconut yogurt was WAY better in Italy. Mmmmm ... Italian yogurt ... Took forever to check out of the hostel. Good thing I gave myself extra time to walk to the train station. Also turned out that ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater Manchester » Manchester April 22nd 2007

I started off well - I left in plenty of time, as planned - rather than the usual rush out at the last minute. I really wanted to get to Chorlton by 4.30pm to take my lovely, fashionable, but fallen-apart boots back to the shop. However, this was not to happen as I had the most horrendous journey up. A lorry had overturned near Huntingdon, so about the time I should have arrived in Manchester, I had just about got past Cambridge - that was fun! Knowing that I couldn’t change any of the situation kept me remarkably calm - none of that road rage, although I did end up taking the most bizarre route (ignoring my GPS’s pleas to “turn around and take the next left” as I followed that old stalwart - the map!) ... read more

ParisThe Conley Family Hey everyone! My family has been in Paris since the 19th and today is the 22nd. It seems since we have been walking so much that we have walked about everywhere possible in Pris. If anyone here wants to go to Paris, instead of walking everywher on foot I recomend takeng a bike tour with fattiretours.com because #1 biking 10 miles is easier than walking 10, and #2 because they are freindly and for those of you who don't speak french thankfully they speak english because they are a ameirican based company. My family took this bike tour and we had alot of fun. So far it has been kind of difficult trying to learn spanish by going to France, Morocco and Portugal. But one of the good sides of going to those ... read more

Spring Break Hello everyone, I’m back from my 2 week Spring Break, so I have a lot of ground to cover in this blog. My travels took me to Munich, Berlin, Brussels, Luxembourg City, Strasbourg, Freibourg, and London. Each city was its own unique experience, and I hope I can give you a good idea of their character and strength. Since there’s so much to say, and I don’t want to lose your attention, we’ll try a new blog format… Munich (Germany): Transport to : 10 hour train ride from Nantes to Paris to Munich. One exciting event on the way was when I reached up to put my backpack on the baggage rails and at the same moment the train lurched left. I broke my fall by falling into the lap of the guy next ... read more

Champions One of the funniest and most memorable times in Poland was when Marios parents picked us up from the train station (we were so relieved to see them coz we didnt know where we were and werent sure theyd got the message). They took us to their house and fed us and then on the way to Marios apartment (before stopping so Marios Dad could by us beer!!! and sausages) we were listening to the radio and good old Queen came on. Marios parents dont speak English, and obviously we dont speak Polish, but 'We are the Champions' is apparently international language. There was one perfectly harmonised moment when Freddie was singing and everyone in the car joined in... it didnt last long coz Cherida and I dissolved into giggles. I will never listen ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Oxfordshire » Oxford April 22nd 2007

On Sunday Adam and I embarked on a little day trip out of London, destination - Oxford. I'm not 100% sure it's what I expected. Essentially what you've got are all these buildings kind of in amongst just a small rural city. Hard to explain - The whole uni side of things, the buildings and history were impressive, but the town of Oxford aside from all of that, was somewhat lacking. I think from some of our pictures from the Carfax Tower you can see that too. But anyway, enough talking it down, I'll give you a run down on it all instead! We paid a whole bloody £1 for this little brochure that allowed us to do a self guided tour of the town. From the outside anyway. Unfortunately pretty much all the colleges like ... read more
