When entering a new country by road, we look for those indicators that initially express that country's individuality. Most obvious was the congested traffic as we zipped from France and then ground to a crawl into Italy. 6 hours for the 200klms from Nice to Genova The traffic also comprises a much higher proportion of motor cycles whose riders exercise an apparent carte blanche with the road rules. There are plenty of pseudo Valentino Rossi amongst them and with the minimum riding age appearing to be around 12, the male Italian motor cyclist has an average life expectancy of 13. The Italians are also an extremely patriotic bunch. From seemingly every second window the national flag hangs proudly from a line, assuming of course the italian national flag is a pair of trousers, pegged to a ... read more

Trip So farMatthew Feben Althugh i have been to Prague before it was definately one of the places i could not wait to get back to again this time.....and it definately did not dissapoint. After a very nice train ride from Berlin we found our hostel relatively easily, at first we had our doubts abou it due to the look of the first floor of the building but once we got to the 3rd floor where the hostel was i seemed to be quite a nice place. It also helped that it was in an awesome location, not far at all to the old town square. Seeing it was a Saturday night the first night we were there we decided to venture out to the infamous 5 storey nightclub that we had all heard so much ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » South Moravian Region » Znojmo April 24th 2007

We spent a few days exploring the Moravian Wine Region in Sourthern Czech, mostly by cycling. Our most memorable day was our cycle through some vineyards. We decided to join the locals way of life and had our first pivo (beer) of the day at 11am! We then cycled a couple of hours and then hiked up a hill (one of these hills with about 3 false tops!), When we finaly made it to the top we had our first well deserved wine. We heard some load music on the way down, we followed our ears and ended up in the local village communtiy hall. The guy at the door was giving us two wine glasses and a book, We had no clue what was going on or what was inside the hall, So we ... read more

Geo: 52.4292, 4.77933Very good hostel breakfast - 3 cheeses and meats, assorted buns and bread (I stuck to the multi-grain bread), plain yogurt, cereal, juice, coffee, biscuits and even hard boiled eggs. Mmmm ... the last time I ate a hard-boiled egg for breakfast while traveling was at a hotel in Barcelona. They had a very nice, rich peanut butter. I stuffed myself - old hostel habits die hard! You gotta go to town on freebies! They actually had a sign posted - they'll make and pack you a lunch for 5 Euros. It was conspicuously placed to discourage people from making their own lunches and running off with it. Not that I would know anything about that ... I've got a sleepy bunch of people in my hostel room - they were all sleeping last ... read more

Fist internet access so far, but cannot publish photos and full entry. We are now at St-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French Pyrenees. Wall to wall sunshine so far. First night at a pleasant village in Normandy, then on to St Severin in Charente to stay at L'Etang, Gary and Linda's beautiful retreat. So far everything working fine on the van, which is much admired. Today, we cross the mountains into Spain.... read more

Went to Freeport in Braintree with my mate Vicki on Saturday, weather was good and had a long stroll round, bought a few bits, stopped for a hot chocolate with caramel (very nice) at Starbucks, chatted, brought a few more bits, stopped for a late lunch. Brought myself a long denim skirt, pink gym top and two strappy tops. Went for pizza at Prezzos, Pizza Express was packed so crossed the road and sat outside at Prezzo’s which was fab - excellent shopping time, caught up on all the gossip and picked up my body shop order from Vicki. Headed to my parents for a family gathering of more food and chat. ... read more

With just a few weeks to go we thought we would go out with a bang! The partying began with Lynds and her 3 best mates on a tour of Southport visiting all their old haunts. Starting at Lynds's primary school Norwood Road, then off to where the 3 of us met in Green Bank High School then where it all ended in Southport King George the V college. A right old trip down memory lane...........Cheers Girls! Next came the fairwell (and Lynds 30th Birthday not to mention) party, in Southports finest of establishments, Fleetwood Hesket cricket club, you judge for yourselves from the pictures. It was a brilliant night, caught up with family & friends, and was the pefect way to say bon voyage. As the night drew to a close, we danced & ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam April 23rd 2007

Just returned from a fabulous weekend in Amsterdam! I absolutely loved this city. It is just so dichotomous and interesting...never a dull moment. You turned one corner and saw gorgeous, tree-lined canals with people riding bicyles with their kids alongisde them on the cobblestoned streets, and you turned another corner and saw magic mushroom shops, sex shows and prostitutes in the Red Light District. It was so different. The airline Ryanair changed our initial flight to London from 5 pm to 10 am, so we had a very, very long layover in the London Stansted airport waiting for our next flight to Amsterdam...that airport is not big enough for an 8 hour layover. Anyway, we finally got to Amsterdam and then to our hostel downtown quite late, at about 11:30 p.m., and were surprised to ... read more

After finishing up Barcelona with minutes to spare, we were greatful that we got to stay another day. Going to an authentic street fair and a ''Castellar'' performance in a small town square, we left without the bad taste in ours mouths from the two previous days. Taking a night train from Barcelona to Bern, Switzerland, we spent the day hiking the Alps in Interlaken. The hike to the top was terrible. I am NOT a hiker. I would rather wear heels than hiking boots any day. I love looking at mountains and appreciating them from the ground. The trail that we took to the top was called ''Harderkulm'' which to me, sounds a heck of a lot like ''harder climb''. I was sweating and panting the entire way up. Courtney and Kinsey had to ... read more
