Finally, Italy! I've been waiting 22 years for this! After getting to Italy and a half day’s forced rest, I was restless to explore beyond the suburb in which my aunt and uncle live. My uncle, suggested the ruins of a castle called Mathilda de Canossa on a nearby (still a lengthy drive away) cliff-top, which we could quickly visit and then be home for dinner (dinner is very VERY important. I’m happy we kept to this rule). So we drove the rental car, a silver fiat punto, in a straight line on the autostrada. Then we began to weave through the hilly Italian countryside. Then we began to drive up a hill of a pretty significant height. Winding roads.. ah yes, car sickness, I’ve found you again! Needless to say, I got to ride ... read more

Today we hung out with couple, who by the way goes by the last lame of Gustaw. We all ate breakfast at the house and then they brought us into the city. It was big! It was so beautiful. There were so many historical buildings that we went to, I can’t even name all of them. We visited the National Museum, the Palace on the Water, and some of its many theaters. We went to one of the largest stadiums in Poland, it’s called Stadion Dziesieciolecia. It’s the biggest open-air market. It had all kinds of things that were being sold. The Gustaw’s bought a whole bunch of things for us to take back to Hawa’ii. After exploring the market, it was about evening time and so we went out to dinner. We ate this small ... read more

We left Birmingham (we stopped at Iain's last night to make the trip a bit easier) at 9am and 9 hours later we reached Oban on the west coast of Scotland. It's quite a busy port with views over to the Isle of Mull and has fairly rugged Highland scenery. We pitched up at the Oban Camping & Caravanning Park, about 1.5 miles south of the town on a windy thin road that followed the coast. It's a pretty cool campsite (though expensive at £10.50 for a pitch! ) The site also had several mallard ducks that constantly waddled the site. During the night a group of three males and one females slept next to our tent. The atmosphere was thick with midges so we sprayed on some of our Boots insect repellent. This only seemed ... read more

ST JEAN de LUZ (France) to LLEIDA (Spain) 12th May 2007 (Saturday - Sunny and 23º in SJDL and much the same in Lleida) After such a quiet day yesterday who would have known what our first taste of Spain had in store for us today. We bade farewell to the Madison Hotel and St Jean de Luz and head once again to Spain and the city of Sans Sebastian. It is only fair and reasonably that we give this City another chance and seeing as it is sunny and 24 degrees it is a much nicer place to see and be. We drive around the shoreline and through the City before heading out onto the Auto Route. We learn more about tolls today. We arrive at a tollgate needing to pay 1.50 euros and we ... read more

The other day Lelde and I took a bus to the coast to go for a walk along the beach. This is when we saw a beaver cleaning himself by the sea. This brings the thought that Latvia's ecology is stil well intact, with a system that supports many large mammals, including wolves and the odd bear! Yesterday I experienced something new. Lelde and I were waiting at a bus, stop to go home, when an old coach pulled up, opening it 's doors. We got on and Lelde informed me that this is a form of ''unofficial'' public transport, something that used to happen alot more often in Riga. Surely enough, the coach quietly made it's way along the normal bus routes, pulling in at the stops- very enterprising(read- illegal). The idiosyncrasies of life in ... read more

MadridJulie J Vanover I did Madrid in several visits, I knew that I would need to pass through here to get to Lisbon and Paris so I would visit the city in the middle of these trips. I had heard that Madrid was a little bit harder of a city to fall in love with than other Spanish cities. I got there and took the Metro to the Puerto de la Sol and understood why. I walked around the Plaza and asked myself ´Why was I supposed to see this?´ It doesn´t have the charm of Barcelona, but after I walked around a while I liked it better. I walked to the Prado Museum and I loved it. It is my favorite musuem so far. My favorite paintings were 'The Garden of Earthly Delights´by Bosch which ... read more

Giverny: A Day at Monet Headquarters The day was planned out pretty well - almost. Bob got up at 5 AM!!! I think he’s the type of man who needs to have “chill” mornings, not just get up and go. So he had his coffee and read his online news while Tita Lut and I stayed in bed until it was our turn to get ready. We met Leroy and Melissa at 8 AM at Metro Villiers. It was a short ride to Saint-Lazare to connect to the train toward Rouen. The train ride itself went pretty fast considering it was just 45 minutes. I guess we were all still wide awake and energized, so we talked a lot…believe me the other way around was not the same. The train dropped us of at Vernon. From ... read more

Europe » Russia May 12th 2007

Hello all! A few months ago I heard: "I'm going to Russia". Impulsivelly, I immediatelly announced: "I am going too!". Tickets bought quickly, a bargain flying out of Gainesville to Atlanta, and from there directly to Moscow. Just couldn't let the opportunity go by, even when Russia hadn't been on my destination list. Lots has happened since the day I decided to take a peek at Russia, and despite not being on my usual "exciting exploratory mood", here I go. I dedicate this trip to my Dad and hope he will be well enough for me to share this blog and journey with. Talk to you soon, hopefully.... I will be taking a plane within Russia, on what I have heard to be "unregulated sky". Patricia... read more
