Wow! London has some pretty impressive stuff to see! we (me n mum) stayed in a hotel for the first 3 nights, in Victoria (close to the center of town). So for a couple of days we walked around the city and saw the sights. First we went to Buckingham palace & saw the changing of the guards (the red dudes with the funny hats). Then we walked through St James park to the palace of Westminster, houses of Parliament & Big Ben. Then on the way back we checked out Westminster abbey & cathedral. The next day we went on the millennium wheel or the London eye, which was pretty impressive, its 350ft high & takes 30min to go round. then onto Trafalgar square to the national gallery (saw Van Gogh's flower painting & a ... read more

harry was supposed to leave on tuesday the 4th but i convinced him to stay until the following tuesday. we were able to go to london to see his family who lives there. we stayed with his aunt cathy in her house in london. it was nice to see his cousins they are really neat kids and it was nice to stay in an actual house not a creepy apartment or hotel for once. we saw everythign there was to see in london plus some. we arrived on thursday and went out for fish and chips at a pub, that was a really neat experience. on friday i do not think i even remember everywhere we went! we started at the tower of london which was so fun because the beefeaters give these tours and the ... read more

Well, this is my first entry into travelblog, hopefully it will work. At the moment I'm laid up on the sofa at home with a gammy knee and a cold. It's less than two weeks now until I am due to leave, I'm not worried about the cold, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the knee will have recovered in time - word of advice to anyone wanting to go travel the world, don't have your knee operated on just weeks before you're due to go. As long as it doesn't stop me from taking advantage of the plethora of winter activities... Anyway, I'm not sure how this thing works, or how updates get sent to people that I actually want to read it, so I'm not going to write any more in case in ... read more

Stumbled across Ash and Alaya again this morning as they were checking into the Castle Rock Hostel- our new home. Have decided to stay here as it's much cheaper than a house, plus it's directly across the road from the Edinburgh Castle! Alaya has a camera, so I'll fight over it with her and try to get more photos happening on here soon. :) Going for a job interview today and I also have a trial on Friday night in a restaurant- thanks to Dre! Much music, much good times to be had by all... will keep in touch.... read more

I just thought I'd share this moment of cultural confusion. Today, i went to get my hair cut in Brighton. The girl was asking me how I wanted my hair, and I told her I wanted my bangs angled. She looks at me and says, "BANGS? What are you talking about." Me: Baaannngsss Girl: BANGS? Me: B-a-n-g-s. Bangs...like you know how you have hair toward the front of your head. Girl: I am just trying to figure out what you mean by BANGS. ...At this point I am like grabbing my bangs and pointing towards her bagns and yelling BANGSSS. The guy next to me goes, "She means fringe. Americans call fringe bangs." I was probably like one of those you had to be there kind of things. For future reference though, in the UK bangs ... read more

Here's pics of my new place. My room is coming together. Still need to try to go to IKEA to pick up my table. Haven't had time this week. We had a speech meeting this morning (Barbara, thank you for never putting us through such a disorganized meeting about nothing!) and it's 2 1/2 hours I'll never have back. Did get to meet some new people and sort a few things out for my own personal job though. Also, just FYI, I've now got internet at my flat and IM is up and running. I know that there's a 5 hour time difference, but I'd love to talk to you if you have IM! Maybe over your lunch hour when I'm already done with work??? :-) Must go to sleep so I can get up in ... read more

I just wanted to all let you know that I was going to be out of town all weekend. I'm going to be going to Germany to visit Tina and the family (family friends of Grandpa Grauel's). I think I'll actually be in Frankfurt, but I don't know. I leave Thursday after class and I will return on Tuesday. I would return earlier but it was much cheaper to come back on Tuesday. And don't worry, I won't be missing any class or course work. I'll have lots of pictures to post on my next entry. Leave me a message and let me know what's been going on back in the States. Love and miss you all!!! Jen... read more

Another day of class although this time a bit more interesting. The topic for today's lecture was "The Cold War in East Asia" and basically consisted of US-Japan relations and their effect within the Cold War and East Asia in particular. It was pretty interesting, besides the fact that the class seems to be almost in the level 1 realm but not quite. Their levels here confuse me and sometimes I feel like I'm in the wrong class, but hopefully I'll be able to figure everything out and be just fine. At the very least I'm not alone in the confusion, since Amy and Sarah (both Australian) are there with me. Tomorrow morning, early (9am after a Wednesday night is torture here), we'll learn something about Nottingham as a city. I'm hoping that we are able ... read more

I met a random stranger last night (well, not that random, I s'pose... she is a fellow couchsurfer) and she just happens to be the coolest person in Edinburgh! I spent most of yesterday wandering aimlessly up and down the Royal Mile- a road in the middle of the old part of town leading to the castle, lined with hunreds of ancient imposing gothic buildings. That in itself was pretty incredible, but then at about 5 o'clock I got a text message from a strange number asking if I wanted to go for a drink. Not having anything to do or anywhere to go for the next few hours, I agreed and went and waited in a pub and read my book (I'll be so glad to finish that bloody thing, but anyway...). Then out of ... read more

Edinburgh is awesome! I'm kinda GLAD I don't have a camera on me, or I'd be doing NOTHING else but taking photos! It kinda reminds me of Freo... apart from the black gothic castles... and... well... it's nothing like Freo... but it's incredibly cool! I think I will stick around here for a while! Couchsurfed again last night (or "GlobalFreeloaded", actually) with two girls from Capel, WA! I give up, I JUST CAN'T AVOID THE WEST AUSTRALIANS!! :) They are really cool and are letting me crash again tonight before I move onto... god knows where! Meeting Ash & Alaya again on Thursday so we'll see what happens until then! Cheers!... read more
