Last weekend, I went on one of my favorite trips of my time here in Scotland. I took a 3-day tour of the Scottish Highlands with a group of 15 other people and the best tour guide ever, Nory. He made friends with everyone almost immediately and really made the trip, because he was determined to make sure everyone had a great time. He told vibrant stories and played music along the way to keep everyone entertained and make sure everyone understood the history behind the sites they were seeing. The tour started on Friday morning and picked us up at the university. From there we headed to Doune castle for a quick look around the place Monty Python and the Holy Grail was mostly filmed. We continued north from there, stopping to grab sandwiches for ... read more

Hi dee hi Well an early night means an early start, I woke up at 6am and we were on the road by 9am, we had a long trip ahead a good 3hrs to Inverness had a little look around then it was back on the road, it was really cold only 9 degrees in the Highlands, you can see why the Scots went to New Zealand the scenery is very similar. We went to the Loch in search of Nessie what a huge body of water that is, another 3 hrs on the road to get to the Cameron Museum we arrived and she was closing in 5 mins...oh no all this way and not being able to go to the museum, we can't visit the castle because it is in residence so the Cameron's ... read more

We sat by the banks of the famous Loch Ness tonight and dined on Scottish fish n chips and chicken kebob after we received our tour of the St. benedict's abbey and monastery! On the walk to the boathouse over, we marveled at where we were and how we got here. During our tour earlier, our host asked us where we arrived from. We said Aberdeen and he responded, "ugh...isn't that such a boring drive?!" ........? not really for us! The following are quotes that could have been heard hours earlier on our first trip on the wrong side of the road with a pack of rabid, aggressive other drivers...."Curse and damnation ya wankers!!!!....Crissers?!?!....Were we even on a roundabout???.....$&@&!$ $;!&@:$ &;$!$&@:....oh of course, ANOTHER roundabout....thirty MORE miles?!?! We've only gone SIX miles?!?!....Crissers!!! You!!!Why did you do ... read more

It's fair to say that I have done my fair share of travel while living in London - yet unlike a lot of my friends, I had never managed to see Scotland properly despite its close proximity. Therefore by the time I had got around to it, everyone had already been there, done that. Famed for its rugged yet beautiful landscapes, to see Scotland's best bits isn't easy either - it is definitely road-trip material and while I'm sure it would be a nice solo drive, I thought it'd be a bit more fun with some company. So the solution to this was a budget bus tour, despite my tender age. I had a great experience doing this last year in Ireland so there was no reason that the same couldn't happen this time around. Rather ... read more

Early Monday morning I woke up to get ready for my 5 day tour of the Highlands and Isle of Skye tour with MacBackpackers. The week went by in a blur and I didn’t have any time to write, so I will combine my week into one entry. That’s not to say that it was a boring week; in fact, it was the complete opposite. It was one of the best weeks of my life and I met so many wonderfully awesome people. On Monday morning we left Castle Rock Hostel around 9 with our tour guide Neil and 25 of us. Our first night was spent in Inverness. On our way there, we made a lot of stops at so many places. Here are a few from the week: Dunkelo, killicrankie, highland folk museum, Culloden, ... read more

This blog entry is coming a day late due to us having literally no internet access or phone signals yesterday! Today started pretty early as again we were keen to beat the crowds on the walkway and be the first for a change. After a lovely breakfast in Glengarry B and B we set off into a somewhat dull and slightly windy morning. We made good ground and had covered around 3 miles within the first hour. The landscape had changed from the gentle slopes and forest to the more Barron moors and imposing mountains. Yvette needed the loo...again and thought she was in a good position where no one could see, only for a train to pass in full view! The wind picked up and at one point a gust appeared, almost taking the feet ... read more

Wednesday 14 2014. Loch Lomond, Scotland. After leaving Ireland on Friday 9th May, we arrived at Manchester after an hours flight and picked up another car, same make and model, but as usual called something else. Can’t have the same thing in Ireland and the UK, god forbid. Anyway we hit peak hour traffic on the M60, same has Sydney, so it took us 90 minutes to get to Rochdale and my Cousin Joanne’s house. We spent the next three days with Joanne, Nathan and their children, Jess, Oliver and Sophia. As usual, time went to quick along with the amount of beer and wine they had stocked up. After Ireland we needed the rest again, so Nathan and Joanne’s was a great chance to recharge the batteries and catch up the newest members of the ... read more

Many people have bucket lists of places or things you want to see or do before you die and we are no different. For Gretchen, the Isle of Iona has been up on her list for some time and we were sorry we didn’t make it to the tiny island 4 years ago. Like yesterday we had two options of roads to get to the ferry that takes you across from Fionnphort on a 5 minute ride. We could take the A849 which was the principal road that travelled back towards Loch Linnhe and then down the middle of Mull or we could take the more circuitous route around the western coastline from Tobermory. The second option was a skinny red road as marked on the atlas although that often didn’t mean it was any narrower ... read more
