My last weekend trip during my time here in Scotland was to one of my go-to destinations while I was here: London, England. I have always wanted to go to London and couldn't pass up the chance while I was here in the UK. I took a Megabus all day Friday and arrived that night at my hostel in Victoria Square. I went out and did some night sightseeing of Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, and of course, Big Ben. Then the real touring started on Saturday. I met with a group of friends I had met on the Highlands tour on the previous weekend and we all got the London Pass, which allows us entry into most of the main attractions in the city. We started off at Kings Cross to visit the famous Platform ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » The Highlands » Stromeferry August 3rd 2015

Last weekend, I went on one of my favorite trips of my time here in Scotland. I took a 3-day tour of the Scottish Highlands with a group of 15 other people and the best tour guide ever, Nory. He made friends with everyone almost immediately and really made the trip, because he was determined to make sure everyone had a great time. He told vibrant stories and played music along the way to keep everyone entertained and make sure everyone understood the history behind the sites they were seeing. The tour started on Friday morning and picked us up at the university. From there we headed to Doune castle for a quick look around the place Monty Python and the Holy Grail was mostly filmed. We continued north from there, stopping to grab sandwiches for ... read more

This past weekend, I took a trip to the capital of Northern Island. Belfast is a city that has a violent history, but was very welcoming while I was there. The Tall Ships Festival was going on during my stay, and it was awesome to see sailboats from all across the world in the harbor. I also visited the Titanic museum to learn more about one of the most famous disasters in history. I was in Belfast from Friday-Monday, and while I was there I visited a lot of the local pubs and had some of the best Guinness of my life. I also did a Black Taxi tour, which toured the divided Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods of Belfast and examined the murals of the Belfast Wall. The wall is taller and longer than the Berlin ... read more

On Thursday, June 25th, I went on a trip with the study abroad group to the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews. One of my favorite things about the town is that it was on the coast. Although the shores were rugged, they were quite breathtaking. St. Andrews is apparently the town where Prince William met Kate, so that should give you an idea of the affluence there. Almost everyone I saw walking around the town was dressed nicely (other than other study abroad students, of course) and the cafes and restaurants were far from "college student budget" levels. However, that is to be expected in a town that plays host to the most prestigious golf course in the world. We visited the club house of the Old Course at St. Andrews, where the names of former ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Perthshire » Pitlochry June 24th 2015

On Sunday, June 21st I went with two friends to go on a canyoning adventure. I didn't have much of an idea of what canyoning was, but when my friend showed me what it entailed I just couldn't pass it up. Canyoning has a little bit of everything, from rock climbing, cliff jumping, rappelling down waterfalls, and even sliding down waterfalls. We went through a company called Nae Limits based out of Pitlochry and the guides we had were awesome. The gear we used included a climbing harness, three layers of wetsuits, and a helmet. When we got to the canyoning sight, it felt like I had just taken a bus and ended up in Colorado or Montana. The scenery was not what I had in mind when I pictured Scotland, with cascading waterfalls and towering ... read more

On Saturday, June 20th, I went with a few friends to explore the big hill that overlooks the University of Stirling campus, known as Dumyat Hill. We had no idea what path to take to make it to the top, so we pretty much decided to make our own. A case of American arrogance, I guess! We started off on a path, but that eventually led us to the middle of a sheep pasture. After hopping the barbed wire fence of the pasture, we just started walking uphill figuring we would eventually find a trail that leads to the top. That took a little longer than we thought it would. After walking along steep ridges and making our way through little valleys created by streams (not to mention a lot of angry stares from confused sheep) ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Midlothian » Edinburgh June 19th 2015

Yesterday was all about exploring Edinburgh, the beautiful capital of Scotland. Our group actually started exploring Wednesday night, arriving in the city to explore some Scottish city nightlife and stay in a hostel. My first hostel experience was actually not that bad, with most of the group getting to stay together and the beds actually being more comfortable than the ones in our school dorms. We arrived by train, and the instant we stepped out onto the streets we were greeted with the centuries old architecture that looked absolutely breathtaking in the setting sun. Our day of exploring began by taking a trip to Edinburgh castle and walking the grounds there. We then grabbed some lunch and went on a Harry Potter walking tour, on which we saw the café that JK Rowling first drew her ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Stirlingshire » Stirling June 15th 2015

Yesterday I got to have the amazing experience of celebrating my 21st birthday in Scotland! Luckily it was nice weather and the group here at Stirling all went out to explore the city and pick up some groceries. There was a bicycle race going on in Stirling which was pretty cool to watch, and the streets of the city were exactly how I pictured an old Scottish town. In the evening, I was able to go out to one of the bars in Stirling with a group of new friends I've met here to celebrate. Most of them are from the University of Kansas, and it was really cool how willing everyone was to celebrate with me even though I had just met them! It was definitely a birthday to remember. My first class is tomorrow, ... read more

After about 8 hours and 30 minutes on a plane, I've finally arrived at the University of Stirling! It is an absolutely beautiful campus, and is also quite large. It seems like there will be plenty to do, and it won't be hard to catch a bus into the main town of Stirling from campus. Tonight we have a reception (at the castle on campus) where everyone from the study abroad program will get to meet each other. I attached some photos from some of the walking I did around campus when I first arrived, and there's still much more to see!... read more
