My last few days in Scotland were just as amazing as the first few. Sadly, my aunt and I had to eventually leave the Highlands and return to Edinburgh. As excited as I was to be back in the big city, I was really going to miss the enchanting, captivating place that was the Highlands. The rural countryside had stolen my heart in a matter of days, and I was really going to miss it.Edinburgh was just as beautiful as we'd left it though. I definitely love the Scottish countryside more, but I must say that the city is incredible. It is so full of history. Anyway back to what I was saying. We had intended to spend that night just relaxing and watching movies. We got takeout and watched Sunshine On Leith, a Scottish musical ... read more

Ortsnamen, die uns erheitern: Earlish and Breakish.

Our Tuesday started off the same way everyone's does; driving to the Highlands with The Proclaimers blaring from the speakers, and dreams of rolling green hills and sheep filling our heads. Okay so maybe not everyone's Tuesday goes like that, but that day, ours did. We woke up bright and early, and after dropping my cousins off at school, set out on our grand adventure. Sadly the first portion of our drive was spent on the freeway, with views of cement roads and hundreds of cars instead of all the sheep and Heilan Cou's (Highland Cows) that I was itching to see. Despite the busy roads, it was a fantastic start to our grand adventure. I mean, there really is nothing like a road trip, especially one throughout one of the most beautiful countries in the ... read more

The day looks like it is going to be dry but it looks to be windy away from the where the chalet is located. We had a lie in this morning and won’t be in too much of a hurry to get out and about as nothing in the Highlands seems to have any urgency about it so we shall simply join the flow. The sun keeps appearing from time to time and the purple heather on the hills further up the valley show up more vividly than when the light on the hills is dull when the clouds roll over. We are going to take on the easier trail this morning just up the road past the whiskey distillery and then we will see how we feel after lunch as to whether we take on ... read more

Yesterday as we had been driving up towards Munlochy we passed at least half a dozen fixed road signs warning that heavy rain was due in the Inverness area on Thursday (today). Opening the curtains this morning the light rain that was falling last night seemed to have all but stopped and away to the west the sky looked lighter and we had hopes of a reasonable day to do some ancestry searching of the Finlaysons,Gretchen’s forebears from the Ross and Cromarty area. Audrey, our host, had a breakfast ready for us downstairs and we spent another hour or so chatting to her and husband David about Gretchen’s connection to the area. David gave us some information on where the locations were that we were looking for to help us on our way. Our final destination ... read more

There are no words that can properly summarize my time in Scotland; no words that can even come close to explaining to you all what an amazing and magical place it is. But for you guys, I will do my best to give you an idea of what it's like. My trip to Scotland took place on the 19th of June, and it could not have been better timing. I was at in a place in my life where I really desperately needed a vacation; I needed to be transported (literally) to a place far away from all my problems and worries. So when my aunt said I could come stay with her in Scotland for a week, I jumped at the opportunity. Sunday the 19th my parents dropped me at the airport at 7 am ... read more

You can't beat winter in Scotland on a rare but amazing sunny day... Just thought i'd upload some photos of a recent trip to Glencoe ski resort. Great fresh powder down to the base and a lovely drive to and from Edinburgh. For anyone visiting Scotland I can recommend the drive past Rannoch Moor up to Glencoe, and then if you've time (and you should if you're on holiday) keep on going North as far as you can! For those skiing or snowboarding in Scotland, Glencoe is one of the best places. When conditions are good you can get close to 2500ft of vertical (800m) skiable in one long run. The resort used to be more for intermediate and advanced, having excellent steep terrain especially on the East flank of the mountain (Flypaper, East Ridge, Spring ... read more

- Dublin 12th - 13th December 2015 My first trip across to Europe was just a wee flight to Ireland to explore the city of Dublin. We arrived in the pouring rain, and it didn’t stop the whole time we were there – a very realistic representation of Ireland apparently. Dublin is a cute, quaint city on the East coast with a river running down the centre dividing the city. The architecture around the city is very Georgian, and particular landmarks stand out from the rest such as the Dublin castle, Parliament and St Patricks Cathedral, all quite significant to the city. Inside St Patricks Cathedral is truly remarkable, the stained glass and the history of the building is so intriguing. The bridges crossing the river are quite picturesque too and add to the character of ... read more

Scotland in three words: castles, nature, rain. I think I spent the month in my raincoat! Rain, rain, rain. What would gorgeous nature be without rain. By the way, the flag automatically pictured with this post is NOT the Scottish flag. Humph. Should be blue background with a white X. My trip began with 4 days in a rental car to Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, and other points in southern Scotland like Wigtown. Adventures included: -Castles: In Castle Douglas I stayed at a quaint B&B and explored the Douglas castle, called Threave Castle. When you get to Threave grounds, you need to ring a bell and a boatman comes and gets you and rows you across a moat to the island where the castle is. I also went to Culzean castle and then Caerlaverock castle ... read more

Last weekend, I went on one of my favorite trips of my time here in Scotland. I took a 3-day tour of the Scottish Highlands with a group of 15 other people and the best tour guide ever, Nory. He made friends with everyone almost immediately and really made the trip, because he was determined to make sure everyone had a great time. He told vibrant stories and played music along the way to keep everyone entertained and make sure everyone understood the history behind the sites they were seeing. The tour started on Friday morning and picked us up at the university. From there we headed to Doune castle for a quick look around the place Monty Python and the Holy Grail was mostly filmed. We continued north from there, stopping to grab sandwiches for ... read more
