Welcome to my first attempt at blogging! :) On Thursday, August 9th, 2012, my girlfirends Alida, Christine and I are embarking on a 10 day adventure, hiking through the Highlands of Scotland. 7 of these days will be hiking from Ft. William to Inverness, about 79 miles!. We will be hiking along many lochs, including the infamous Loch Ness! I will be adding blog enteries daily (if Wi-fi or internet is available) and many pictures! Christine has a knack for weird pictures, so that should be interesting and Alida is the queen of words, so I should not come up short in that area. Watch for my first blog on Friday. My flight leaves late on Thursday with a layover in London. I'm hoping for a glimpse at the Olymic bridge from the airplane! The Great ... read more

So the last of the three peaks is now complete. I travelled up on Friday with another first: the longest train journey I have ever taken; four trains, 10 hours and 480 miles. The last train was packed full of walkers all heading to Fort William, all carrying rucksacks and the equipment for their own adventures. The rest of the gang collected me from Fort William station and we called in for a quick pint before heading off to our accommodation in one of the many bunkhouses in the town all catering to the tourists. We set off early the next morning. At the bottom of the trail we met two guys who had just completed the three peaks in 19 hours: impressive stuff as this includes the travel time between them as well. What can ... read more

Started off the day with lots of fog in Kyleakin. Apparently, the Isle of Skye is nicknamed the Misty Island. This was the first fog we had seen and man, you couldn't even see the boats 10 feet away. So, we headed off for our second run up the nearby hills (Nigel had two fewer heart-attacks, an improvement over the first hill climb!) and sadly, the view was nothing but fog. Too bad cuz we didn't have the camera the first time we were up there and discovered the fantastic views! Anyways.....after another lovely breakfast served up by Gillian, we signed her guest book, said our goodbyes and headed off. We were in no hurry to get back so we made lots of stops for photo ops, short hikes, and a quick stop for sandwiches for ... read more

So today we started off with my mom and dads run at the hotel and then once they got back from the run we went to have breakfast and I had 1 croissant and water and oranges and bread and then we checked out around 10:00 and then we left so we can come home. We stopped a few times Russell went for 1 mile run and I stayed in the car and did my 1 mile run later so now that we are home I did my 1 mile run practice and then me and Russell went straight to the trampoline and played this game where we can not touch the soccer bouncey balls!!! Before that we finally went shopping and for lunch I had some sushi and lots of apples and then we went ... read more

After another fabulous breakfast, we headed off for a circle tour of the "small loop" around the Isle of Skye. This took us up past Portree and then west to Dunvegan and then back down to Broadford. The loop gave stunning views of the Cuillen Mountains. We stopped in Broadford for some lunch and then headed down to the bottom tip of the Isle of Skye, called Elgol, to get on the AquaXplorer boat tour. The drive down to Elgol was a one-lane windy road with lots of "passing places" where you are meant to pull in if you come up with a car heading toward you on the one-lane road in order to pass each other. This can be quite tricky! The other mentionable thing about the Isle of Skye is that we came across ... read more

I am very sorry that I forgot to do my blog a lot of days, so now I am going to do three days. We went to Dornoch castle which has a hotel in it. It is where Madonna got married. You can research about her. We went to the beach and saw a lot of jellyfish and I cried my head off because I was scared they would sting me. My dad told me not to worry because if you get stung someone just has to pee on you (and my dad goes to the bathroom a lot!). But I was still scared of the jellies. Russell and I had our own provate room at the castle that was connected to the parents. The breakfast was really tasty. All I had was food from my ... read more

Well, today was a day of FIRSTS.....we woke up in a castle (definitely a FIRST). Breakfast was incredible, a full Scottish breakfast - black pudding, kippers (for Russell), potato scones, toasties, Scottish oats, sausages, poached eggs, back bacon, and scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for Rachel. Then after we packed up, we headed over to the beach down the road. Another FIRST - we found hundreds of jellyfish!!! Some were washed up on shore and you could check them out close up - they were clear with purple centres. There were also hundreds in the water. Also we saw crabs in little tiny shells. After about an hour on the beach, we finally got back in the car. By the way, did I mention that for the FIRST time, it was sunny the whole day practically!!! ... read more

After another run in a light drizzle, we packed up and head north.....way north. We started off on a main highway and soon went off onto a smaller one where the views were spectacular. The kids could hardly peel their eyes away from the views to play their DS's (ha ha). Well, Nigel and I enjoyed the views. It got especially gorgeous once we hit the highlands. We passed many lochs (one funny one called Loch Lochy) including driving alongside Loch Ness for about an hour altogether - it is one LOOOOOONG lake. No sign of Nessie although Rachel did keep her eyes peeled. Halfway along Loch Ness was a lovely castle called Urquhart Castle. It had not been maintained nor restored but was the shell of the former castle. It was right on Loch Ness ... read more

Plockton When we arrived at Plockton we had just had the scary experience of negotiating the Skye road bridge. This bridge is 25 metres high, but as we approached it really looked as if our 23 metre mast was just about to hit. Alan had been reassuring me that there was plenty of room, but when he looked up, it looked so close he stopped the boat, just in case. As it was we were soon underneath and safe. Plockton is one of the most picturesque villages in Scotland, and there is a big wide mooring area, with mooring balls to tie onto, and room to anchor as well. Forested hillsides line the shore one side and a small whitewashed village the other. There are walks all around the village, and the people were very friendly ... read more

The next night we had lovely oysters and good fish. We went to the oyster bar.We spent some time looking in the shops which appeared as tiny but were filled with every kind of object that you could need. There was a soap making shop, a bakery, a kind of ironmongers, a coop and lots of little gift shops. The bakery did good cakes and coffee. Next morning we left Tobermory about 10 am after Alan had walked the dog. Mull has a population of white-tailed eagels, we did see a large wing -spanned bird, but don't think it was one of those. The walk to the lighthouse above the town was very pretty, another haven for wild flowers, the tiny delicate harebells of Scotland, that I remember from my childhood, white wild garlic, the smell ... read more
