Russell and his kippers
This was his favourite breakfast so far! One big fresh kipper! Well, today was a day of FIRSTS.....we woke up in a castle (definitely a FIRST). Breakfast was incredible, a full Scottish breakfast - black pudding, kippers (for Russell), potato scones, toasties, Scottish oats, sausages, poached eggs, back bacon, and scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for Rachel.
Then after we packed up, we headed over to the beach down the road. Another FIRST - we found hundreds of jellyfish!!! Some were washed up on shore and you could check them out close up - they were clear with purple centres. There were also hundreds in the water. Also we saw crabs in little tiny shells. After about an hour on the beach, we finally got back in the car.
By the way, did I mention that for the FIRST time, it was sunny the whole day practically!!! Woohooo! Maybe that is partly why the drive was so awesome.
We were headed to the Isle of Skye. We made a short stop at our FIRST distillery - Glenmorangie. Nigel toured around while the kids practised for their one mile race. Then we continued on along the northern route across to the Isle of Skye. This was the most gorgeous drive
Purple jellyfish
We sure didn't expect to see these! Rachel was scared someone would get stung. so far. Many lakes, highland cows, sheep, even some mountains! It got even more picturesque as we got close to the Isle of Skye. The views were incredible and we kept having to stop and just look for a while. We eventually made it to our little hotel and Gillian, our hotel owner, recommended a nice run which took us up and up and up for a spectacular view of the firth and the bridge we took across to the isle. By the way, when I mentioned to Gillian about going for a run, I glanced outside and didn't it start to rain right then! It only lasted for 5 minutes but it is like the weather knows when we want to run!!!
Afterwards, we headed down the road on foot for dinner of fish and chips at Saucy Mary's. Delicious! Then we headed down the isle to a nearby village for our FIRST Ceileigh! This was an incredible local treat which we likely wouldn't have gotten if we'd stayed in a big city. This was small town and had local talent including several students from the local Gaelic college (where one of the Run Rig band members teaches!)
Jelly on the side
Side view of a puffy jellyfish! and some of the teachers. We were treated to performances on bagpipes, some singing, accordion, banjo, violin and irish flute! What a special night!
The other thing to mention is that in this area, unlike parts of Scotland where there are two languages, English and Gaelic, here it seems to be mostly Gaelic with some English. At the Ceiligh, they spoke Gaelic and sometimes translated to English. They sang in Gaelic (pronounced Gallic) and the audience would join in on the choruses (not us obviously). It felt like another country altogether. It was very cool!
Back to the hotel for a sleep as we have a big day tomorrow.....
