We awoke this morning to the comforts of our own bed, always a genuine spirit lift after one has been away....there's nothing like it---the sounds, the smell, the feeling. Our mornings at the abbey were very, very comparable with the exception of the child and dog parade we receive daily here, sometimes arriving under secret silent protest. I feel pretty well today and allowed myself minimal sleep during our crazy adventure homeward...three hour drive to the airport, 2.5 hour flight from Scotland to Germany, five hour layover, Germany to Denver in 10 hours, three hour layover and then a quick 50 minute flight back into the arms of our clinging daughters. Clayton, on the other hand, had his immune system fail the last day in Scotland and came down with a cold. He slept most of ... read more

My newest love with Loch Ness
Is this love....why yes it is!!!

The sun is setting on the shores of Loch Ness right now. In about four hours, we are climbing into our little Fiat and I'm driving us (yes, the vote came in and the race car driver was chosen and gladly accepted) three hours to catch our 5:25 am flight to Frankfurt..............this place is magical. We were graced with brilliant sunshine again today and we explored the remainder of the abbey grounds and walked along the River Taff and the Loch Ness. We swam again in the chapel pool and from a pool operator's standpoint-what a great piece of work! The pool water here is cleaned by the UV system....every ounce of water is pumped by UV light system in the pump room killing 99.9% of any bacteria. Salt or chlorine is then used to keep ... read more

We're cuddled on the couch under a big, puffy comforter tonight thinking about the grand adventures of this day...both today and a year ago. Our family and friends surrounded us and watched us exchange our vows and our girls tied our hand fasting cord. A year ago, we never would have guessed we would be here on the banks of Loch Ness .... We truly feel blessed to have found each other and enjoy every second in each other's company. I'm lucky to be able to share my entire self with another soul. It's 11:00 pm, 5:00 pm back home in a South Dakota and time for the Skype fiesta! We really enjoy visiting the girls with this and it has really kept us all sane while we are apart! Love this technological advancement with the ... read more

Today we left the abbey in MY little race car, better known to the lay person as the Fiat 500. When we rose for the day, we were greeted with brilliant sunshine and a fabulously sunny forecast! We quickly decided that our travels over to the Isle of Skye was a must today. It takes about two and a half hours of driving to get over to that region so we enjoyed a Tia Marie coffee and hit the road....it was my turn to take on the task of driving! The roads here are two way with no shoulders, much like driving the needles highway of the Black Hills of South Dakota....I absolutely thrived on the thrill with my navigator white knuckling it for about the first thirty minutes of the trip...I cannot help it if ... read more

I awoke to the subtle notes of a classical ensemble...it seems one of the staffers here is fixing something in our hallway. It's nice ... a relaxing quiet moment as we're cozy under our quilt in the Raven's Wing. When I found this apartment complex, it wasn't listed as anything special, no Eco-tourism wonder, just a 1700s abbey that has been made into self catering flats. I've marveled at this complex! It's very Eco-friendly...(yes roll your eyes some of you) America is certainly behind the times on this one! It's not cool or uncool, or hippy, it just is because it's necessary or the right thing to do...oh the waste of the western giant) every electrical outlet has an on/off switch, there is a pad of switches built right out for display in the kitchen to ... read more

Happy Spring!!! Due to the overcast, we missed the amazing solar eclipse but the day was filled with great gifts on our Scotland adventure. We explored more of the St. benedict's abbey grounds and trekked around Fort Augustus. This thriving village of pop. 650 has charming businesses and niches. We explored more of Loch Ness and just enjoyed the atmosphere. It is chilly here with the wonderful aroma of peat throughout the countryside. Peat is a form of natural energy that gives off a lovely scent....and I believe attributes to the naturally good moods the locals all seem to excude. They will greet all on the streets and in their shops whether they are a customer or working away. It is very refreshing! These people seem to have a slower pace than what we are used ... read more

We sat by the banks of the famous Loch Ness tonight and dined on Scottish fish n chips and chicken kebob after we received our tour of the St. benedict's abbey and monastery! On the walk to the boathouse over, we marveled at where we were and how we got here. During our tour earlier, our host asked us where we arrived from. We said Aberdeen and he responded, "ugh...isn't that such a boring drive?!" ........? not really for us! The following are quotes that could have been heard hours earlier on our first trip on the wrong side of the road with a pack of rabid, aggressive other drivers...."Curse and damnation ya wankers!!!!....Crissers?!?!....Were we even on a roundabout???.....$&@&!$ $;!&@:$ &;$!$&@:....oh of course, ANOTHER roundabout....thirty MORE miles?!?! We've only gone SIX miles?!?!....Crissers!!! You!!!Why did you do ... read more

We are sitting in the Frankfurt airport waiting in a deli/bar....these things are genius! Deli food, kaffee items, beer and drinks all in one location. We enjoyed a honey Weiss and a woman sat next to me...been in a "dry" country for a year and she said "give me a mohjito....I haven't drank in a year....can you imagine a dry country?" I engaged in an hour long conversation with a Wisconsin woman who has been abroroad with her now 10 year old daughter in tow? what a great treat! We laughed, talked about raising our daughters and the cultural things affecting them. She was meeting friends in Canada but is the actually located in the Arab nations, teaching English....desert area where the temp is around 120 degrees. Her daughter speaks Arabic and English. We talked about ... read more

Our grand adventure has been pretty flawless so far. Our flight was delayed by a few hours and somehow our pilots made up for lost time and we arrived just an hour over the original time. Lufthansa airline is the best! We were fed two meals as well as a tasty snack....and twice we were given moist, warm towellettes to keep fresh with. The service was friendly and my only complaint was we just couldn't sleep. We did have a screaming toddler for the first two hours---yes two FULL ON hours of the kid simply screaming, no tears, over and over with every little breath. Everyone was extremely patient for the first hour and a half. After that, even I was thinking the mom needed to dose the little shaver with a sleep aid. I rather ... read more

Every day is one step closer to our grand adventure! I take a Gaelic lesson every day, sometimes with epic fail, repeat and somehow it sticks? This past week, I've chatted with our flat contact from Scotland-a very friendly fellow with the last name Channing who had difficulty understanding MY accent. I've also had conversations with a German man for our board in Frankfurt, Germany, and also a French woman who helped me with our banking conversion. This is sooooooo exciting!!! Every spare minute, I am planning and dreaming and wondering what we are going to encounter....I love the vast knowledge of the Internet! This afternoon, my dad, the Google Earth expert, was looking all around Scotland and finding our flat at the Highland Club in Loch Ness. Last night, I was knee deep in information ... read more
