Tag 65: Portsoy - Ellon, 79.34 km, Fahrzeit 5:17, Durchschn. Also Gepäck runter, ... read more

'Morning! We're going out of town today. Hurrah! Our breakfast ( the best so far ) was hot porridge and milk, cereal, a Scottish breakfast with the usual stuff plus fried black pudding ( not really my thing! ), toast, ( bowls of prunes and fruit salad if you were so inclined ), pots of tea and hot chocolate, even “The Small young Gentleman” managed a plate of scrambled eggs. He particularly wanted the porridge 'cos I had tried to make it at home but I wasn't very good! Our coach was to leave at 11:35 from the Aberdeen Bus Station. I had decided that we would go to a little town called Banchory. ₤6.70 for me and ₤3.70 for “The Small young Gentleman” Return and we were on our way. We were on the intercity ... read more

Hi Friends and Family! After a refreshing sleep in which “The Small Young Gentleman” fell out of bed and I got up at 6 a.m. Again! We had an early breakfast at 7:30 and booked a taxi for 8:40 as our train was to leave at 9:10. We paid an extravagant 7.00 pounds. Gulp! I had pre-booked and pre-paid our reserved train seats for the 2.5 hour trip to Aberdeen - ₤10.00 for me and ₤5.00 for “The Small Young Gentleman”. We received free cans of Coca Cola Zero which they were promoting and used the journey to play “Happy Feet” and various other games on my Notebook until the battery ran out and I fell asleep. Going on holiday is exhausting don't you know! We arrived slighty before 12:00 and according to the station staff, ... read more

We had a great time in Aberdeen from the moment we touched down. Spending time with Katharine and her family, enjoying the clean fresh air and seeing green and yellow across the horizon as we drove along the countryside. Mum,and Dad took such good care of us and fed us well during our stay. Dad took us for a tour of the Glenfiddich whisky distillery which was interesting. He was brave and generous and shared some of his collection of whiskies and unfortunately for him, I loved his favourite bottle (Laphroaig) the best..ha ha We spent the rest of the days chilling out and jogging around the neighbourhood and burnt away all the farewell and welcome drinks we had consumed before coming here...... And I finally got to try haggis, neaps and tatties meal which was ... read more

"It will all be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end." For sometime now, I couldn't stop my gut from wanting to see the castles along the coast of Scotland. This gut decision wasn't the most "logical idea" (as if any of them have been). It came with a pretty pricey plane ticket and an ungodly transit from Vietnam: 4 planes, 2 taxis, 1 bus, and some gold old fashioned time and patience got me here in about 2 days. Still say this is not a bad deal, going across the globe in a weekend. It was the 3 mile hike along the edge of the Scottish coast to Dunnottar Castle, when I realize, it wasn't so much the castles that my gut was after, but what was around them. There ... read more

Herein lies my last blog entry :( Well I never really thought this time would actually come, but here I am writing my final blog entry. My 7 months of freedom after finishing my degree have now finaly come to an end. After returning from Auckland I had just under a week to catch up with as many friends and family as possible, get my life together, have one big club night in London and move to Aberdeen to start the next chapter of my life. I have now just completed my first week of work in my new role as 'Production Technologist' with Shell Oil. Since the first week was taken up mainly with admin like filling in forms, getting an email, meeting my team and all that bunkum I can't yet say exactly what ... read more

Do you watch the winter Olympics on television, and aren't you amazed at the curling matches?! Well, it's our new favorite sport. I was made for curling! Except that the 'sweeping' part is too much like housekeeping, and I don't know my anti-clockwise from my clockwise. And a strategy, as in chess is applied to the stones position. But it is a bit like pool, and I have played that. If you have followed our blogs til now you know that these regional meetings Keith goes to, usually have 'fun' event for the guys to relax and get to know each other. In Italy it was 'karting'. The guys at Inverurie has curling planned for the evening. (I get to go to this one) In Aberdeen, about 30 minutes drive, there is a curling club, a ... read more

Times have been a bit crazy for the last few months. Justin has been preparing for the start of his PhD, while finishing his work on his thesis which he should finish in the next week or so! I have recently handed in my LLM Dissertation and it is finally starting to sink in! It's an exciting time of year as all the hard work we put in this year is coming together. As well, my parents will be arriving in exactly one weeks time! Its a welcome vacation and should be an excellent time! It will be a lot of fun showing them around Scotland - but also experiencing Ireland with them - none of us (mom, day, Justin, myself) have ever been to Ireland before so I am quite excited as is everyone else! ... read more

I am First Mate Hawkswan, travelling under the leadership and guide of Captain Jones Smitherington. The Captain had been sailing the skies for some time already, but this had been my first venture out under his tutilege. I am eager and I am excited, but am also ready. And this is my tale... PRELUDE I arrive in Aberdeen, Northern Scotland with a pack on my back, a pack on my chest, and the cool breeze on my face. Glorious. The sky is intermixed with clouds as I overlook the countryside from the entrance of the airport. Perhaps it was the 12 hours flying, the stiffling airports, or the children who kept complaining, "Mummy...mummy my ears mummy, they hurt mummy. Why aren't you helping me mummy? I cahn't mummy, I cahn't" - but that breeze was quite ... read more

In Aberdeen again with my buddy Adam and Peter. Well, I really need to say thanks to Adam, he has always shown me a great time in Aberdeen. This year for my return visit he scheduled a day of fishing on a fishing boat, where I caught just under 20 mackerel while the total catch for the day must have just topped 200. We bar bq'd a hell of a lot of fish that night, absolutely delicious. The following day myself, Adam and Peter went golfing and had a few beers. We took a few nights out as well, with some very heavy drinking and video on my camera that none of us remember taking place... lol! Adam unfortunately had to leave on Sunday for his birthday in Morocco with his girlfriend, but luckily he still ... read more
