Asia » India » Goa » Anjuna Beach November 21st 2007

Ah yes... how do you end a journey across the world over 3 months?... but on the sandy warm beaches of Goa of course! Not much happened here. Morning: Internet for a bit updating my travelblog. Afternoon: Sit on the beach or at our favourite restaurant overlooking the beach. Evening: Watch a few movies, then head out for a nice King Fish grilled dinner in garlic and lemon sauce. Wednesday was a bit of an exception, the Wednesday beach flea markets were at the beach! So we browsed all afternoon, bought a few things, my best purchase was... THE OM SHANTI OM SOUNDTRACK!!!!!! Later on Wednesday I bid farewell to my fellow travel companion as Steve headed off to explore the remainder of his India trip. I, on the other hand, had a flight home to ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Hampi November 17th 2007

Out in the dirt, dust and heat we biked for 2 days straight. The entire area of Hampi, aka "The City of Ruins", is a UNESCO World Heritage Site... I'm beginning to wonder what isn't a UNESCO World Heritage Site in India. This place had more white people than I had seen since we left Europe under the clouds. Every building was a guest house that rented mopeds and bicycles out back and had a rooftop restaurant. We rented a couple bikes and rode down the dirt trails covering around 50kms over the 2 days. This also included a ride across a river in a huge weaved basket that held 3 motorbikes, 4 bicycles, and about 8 people all piled on top of each other. We climbed ruins, mountains, and then some more ruins... we even ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Badami November 15th 2007

On our way to Badami we had to switch busses twice. On our second transfer we were in Bijapur and with a few hours to kill we took a rickshaw for a tour of the city to see some cool sights. Our driver spoke no English, out of all the drivers at the bus stop that did, we somehow ended up with the one that didn't. He just sat there, drove and when asked anything wobbled his head, identical to a bobble head car ornament. This, according to the Lonely Planet, can mean yes, no, maybe or something else in India. We stopped at some tombs where we had to take our shoes off (quite normal for any temple in India), walk clockwise around the tombs, rub smoke on our face and ashes on our neck. ... read more

Asia » India » Maharashtra » Aurangabad November 13th 2007

Wow, after a long ass bus ride we finally arrived in Aurangubad in the early hours of Monday morning. I had never heard of this place, along with the next 6 or so places we would go but Hawk had some sort of plan put together with his partner in travel (the Lonely Planet) or as many call it, the bible. Although in the middle of nowhere, there was still posters plastered up everywhere screaming "Go watch 'Om Shanti Om'!" As we departed the bus, Hawk was busy chatting up some blonde lady, who I realized was scared of everyone and begged Steve to look out for her. She appeared to be in her late thirties, from Italy, spoke very poor broken English and her name was Pennelope. She asked us to go to her hotel ... read more

Asia » India » Maharashtra » Mumbai November 10th 2007

Arriving at 2AM at Mumbai International, the temperature outside?... 26 degrees Celcius. We jumped in a taxi for Colaba (a more touisrty part of town) which was one of the greatest rides of all time. Who cares about traffic lights, speed limits, designated lanes or even on-coming traffic in India?... apparently no one. Driving through the city I tasted about 100 different smells per minute, from the constant smell of raw sewage, to rotting fish, burning garbage, food, sweat, smog and a varying mixture of the above and many I couldn't determine. India, being the second largest country in the world (after China) at over 1.2 billion is obviously over populated by the enormous amounts of people including entire families sleeping on the street, under carts or on top of cars. I couldn't walk more than ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hesse » Frankfurt November 6th 2007

Driving back to Frankfurt we headed through some snow tipped mountains where I experienced my first freezing temperatures in over 4 years. But we made good use of the fresh snow as myself, Hawk, and Marco all enjoyed a good ol' snowball fight. We arrived back in Frankfurt where I packed up some of my warm clothes to be mailed back to Sydney as I won't be needing them in India and a little later went to bed. Well after more than 9,000kms driven, 5 parking tickets, 3 speeding tickets, 1 illegal passing ticket, 1 small bump, an average speed of 160km/h, a top speed reached of 197km/h, 3 cameras broken, stolen or missing and way too many hangovers to remember half the trip... we left Marco back at the Frankfurt International airport where we met ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague November 3rd 2007

Well with only a few nights left in Europe, we decided to move our way back to one of the best cities among Eastern Europe, Prague... or as its truly called, Praha. We checked in late, as Steve took up most of the day sleeping and puking. But alas we headed out to a club called the Cross Club which was one of the most interesting bars I have ever attended. It was covered in used car parts... but these parts were clean, and welded together to make amazing decorations. They had lights embedded in them and their gears turned and rotated all the time, throwing crazy lights and shadows against the walls. The music however was that of trance and dark death rock of which I am not fond of. So we only stayed for ... read more

Europe » Austria » Upper Austria » Linz November 1st 2007

Ah... Linz, Austria. May not look big on a map, may seem smaller than most cities we have visited, but it contained 3 of the best things in Europe. An awesome, awesome club, Steve's 25th Birthday, but above all... Sandra... my flatmate of 3 months in Bondi Beach, Australia (Sydney). Sandra was kind enough to let us stay with her, and what a place she has: 2 stories, a swimming pool and only 3 minutes from PlusCity (a massive shopping center/cinema/bar and restaurant complex). At only 20, she teaches Kindergarden kids English full time, teaches kids to figure skate on Sundays, and teaches Scouts as a Scout leader. Talk about being busy, but she still had time to go out Friday night until 6AM to catchup on good times we had in Bondi and to celebrate ... read more

Europe » Slovakia » Bratislava Region » Bratislava October 31st 2007

Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. The appearance, meh not so good... it appeared more communist looking than any other city we have visited with almost every apartment building looking the same as each other with a very flat and square appearance. On our first night here being Saturday, we headed out to find a good place to have some drinks. We followed some locals we met to a bar named Charlie's. Here the bouncers charged me and Hawk triple the cover charge and by the end of the night after numerous drinks the bouncers (I beleive it was the bouncers) stole some money and my camera as I left the club. Unfortunately, Hawk had disappeared earlier as he is known for so I made my way back to the hostel by way of a taxi, a ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik October 24th 2007

Wow, it was almost 2 weeks ago now that we made it to Dubrovnik, Croatia that I can't really remember too much of it. It was a long drive, about 8 hours with a short stop in Zagreb (the capital). In Zagreb we ate dinner and checked out a pub named Tolkien's House, which of course as you may guess was decorated in mainly a Lord of the Rings theme and shots named after places and characters from the story too. But from there we then continued on our way south to Dubrovnik through windy coastal roads with beautiful views in the night until we made it to our destination at nearly 2AM. we spent the next day here, walking mostly and taking numerous photos of the glorious castle walls that surround the town and are ... read more
