We planned to visit Padstow by bus on 21st September. The hotelier also said good things about the bus. Mark had checked the bus timetable and we were to take the bus from near our hotel. I had written postcards for two people in Japan; we went to the post office before catching the bus. I was a little surprised that postage fees have been risen quite a lot. We took the 10:39 open Decker bus for Padstow. The friendly bus driver did complimentary guide for passengers through the journey, although he had to drive through narrow, winding paths from time to time. The bus went through Porth Beach, Watergate Bay & Beach and Porthcothen Bay. We popped in the tourist information centre after getting off the bus. I found the leaflet of ‘historic trail’ in ... read more

On 22nd September we checked the weather forecast and learned that it might rain in the afternoon. We planned to do the country & coastal walk; I wore raincoat and mark took his umbrella. We took eastwards’ direction from our hotel. Our walking course was started from Narrow Cliff continuing from Cliff Road. We walked past Tolcarne Beach, Lusty Glaza Beach and reached Porth Beach – we saw those beaches from the bus previous day. Porth Beach showed us a number of dramatic features of scenery – a wide variety of coastal wild flowers, different featured rock formations and ancient mounds – and we could see those from different angles throughout the course, e.g. suspension bridge, head of peninsula. We also saw a lot of people surfing and swimming in the sea. Our walking course included ... read more

In Penzance but it’s the old taxi trick again. We were meant to be at the Minack Theatre right now but the performance was cancelled due to the poor weather. There’s a photo of the theatre that sort of explains why the weather is super important to them. So our best laid plans, booking from home, arranging pickup, alerting our BnB hosts, carrying a change of clothes amounted to nothing! Consequently we found somewhere to eat (Italian but only just OK) and treated ourselves to an ice cream. It was our first real ice cream (although I had gelato, old habits die hard) and it was good. Walked through the tin mining region today which was interesting, a reminder of how tough things were not so long ago. The track today was far superior to that ... read more

Really we are in Pendeen but it’s a hamlet and too small to register on Travel Blog. Tomorrow we should be in Perranporth after rounding Lands End. BIG day today. About 25 km but very rocky walking. We do not have many photos as proof as the weather was so poor that getting the iPad or camera out was a risky operation. It rained from the moment we set off in St Ives and we endured 3 or 4 quite drenching periods but between times the wind was strong enough to dry us out pretty well. Changing socks helps but really conditions were fairly bleak. Couple that with the track being so rocky that progress was slow. There was no way we could go faster as it would have been dangerous. Having settled into the 20 ish km per day routine the thought of a 30 km day was a bit scary. Couple that with some steep hill descents/ascents in the first hour or so we decided to cut short the day and only walk 20 of the 30 km that was scheduled. As it happens we were meant to be collected and driven back home so things worked OK and easy. As it was the last 15 km was pretty easy and we finis be mid afternoon but that extra 10 would have taken close to 3 hours and much of that walking was on tarmac and around an estuary, walking down one side and back up the other. It was possible but would have made for a big day walking from 9 o’clock to about ... read more

Yes, half of everything. Another good day although the track was very rocky and rough. These conditions mean you have to be careful with every step as it’s so easy to roll an ankle. As such it’s surprising how much more effort goes into such a day. The distance and elevation were commensurate with previous days but the extra degree of concentration means today was considerably more tiring than previous days. The landscape is changing here, the colours are lighter and less intense and although we’ve seen plenty of gorse and heather here it’s not as intense. It’s still delightful but… We are entering Poldark territory here and the landscape is bleaker, harder and harder than we have become accustomed to. The chimneys and wheal remains remind us of bygone times. The Welsh influence is strong ... read more

Back in Newquay. Unusual style accommodation here, quite hostel in the feel. Certainly not the Savouy but fine. They changed the towels and tidied up which wasn’t really necessary but still appreciated. Breakfast was fine with some cooked options but plenty of fruit, cereal and yogurt and even toast and crumpets that you can cook yourself so you get them exactly how you like them and when you want them. Novel idea! Walked to the tidal bridge today, fully expecting it to be underwater. It was. Who designed a bridge to be impassable at high tide and even impassable a couple of hours either side of high tide? We couldn’t even see it. That means a short walk to the ferry as the only other reasonable alternative. The unreasonable alternative is almost 4 miles of road ... read more

Bun. The first photo is for you. Pub and defibrillator in one location, does it get any better? We were here 3 days and I know my way around, know the beers and ciders pretty well, know the menu and order with confidence (easy mussels and something else), know the staff and really know the schedule but I never saw the defibrillator! But I didn’t need it either. More mussels last night, enjoyed as usual. Then some fish and peas and chips and peas and salad and peas! Too many peas! Would have gladly traded some for some salad but… Probably because we’d not long ago had a Cornish pasty (hard to believe I know) we were more than filled to dolly’s wax. Taxi back to Porthcothan was good, jovial driver with plenty of opinions about ... read more

Yes we have been in Padstow for 3 days! We walked out today and to a place called Porthcothan which is pronounced like ‘poor cousin’ but with a bit of a lisp and a coarse, gravelly voice. Suffice to say nobody knows of it (even around here) and because accomodation is scarce there we are back again in the ‘Old Ship’ for another night. After walking 19km the taxi got us back here in 15 minutes! A little soul destroying and sole destroying! Yes we went to Rick Steins signature restaurant last night. Julie had scallops and then salmon and I had the fish and shell fish soup (flavoured with tomato and saffron) followed by the Malaysian fish curry (one of the signature dishes here). The restaurant is sumptuous and elegant although the clientele dress standards ... read more

Padstow or because Rick Stein is so ubiquitous and omnipresent here it is referred to as Padstein! I have enjoyed his pasty significantly more than I thought I would. His recipe stated he uses swede but I’m pretty sure it was parsnip with meat pieces. The meat is cut not minced and it was pleasantly peppered so I thought the pasty was very good. Pasties are everywhere here, there are 3 consecutive shops all selling baked goods and all specialising in ‘real Cornish pasties’. They are all in Mill Square, Padstow, Cornwall so their claims may be legitimate. Everyone here has a pasty, an ice-cream or some fish and chips. As far as I know Rick Stein does not make ice cream although he does sell it. The line at his fish and chip deli was ... read more
