Up early to talk to the girls, then breakfast. Today was our last breakfast in Bath, so we enjoyed it. I had pancakes with fruit and yoghurt and Peter had scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. We packed the cases and put them in the car. The drive was going to take about 4 hours, and the weather forecast in Cornwall was for rain, so we decided not to stop to sightsee on our way. As we drove the weather deteriorated. There were a few spots where there were hold ups, but we didn't get lost (too much). On our way we stopped for a cup of coffee at a huge services area. There was a petrol station area, and below that a huge car park and a warehouse structure. Inside was a Costa, Cornish pastry company, ... read more

Morning wakeup was to the sound of seagulls outside the hotel window. This is it, the last and shortest leg of my cycle trek and it will put me at journeys end - Land's End. 1800kms completed,... except for that episode between Kendal and Manchester. But, the Orkney trek, the cycle back to Penzance, and a few other diversions have easily made up the mileage, although not the terrritory. Panniers packed and taken down to the lobby, I blended with the busloads of senior seniors in the hotel restaurant and chatted up a few. Buffet breakfast, and then out the door and onto the bike Another sunny start, with the obligatory dark clouds on the horizon. Penzance popped up real fast and was a great cycle. Mild hills, and then a steady roll down into Marazion, ... read more

Up early today, even though it's only 70km to St. Ives, but I'm still anticipating the dreaded Cornish hills to slow my progress and, as I couldn't contact them on a Sunday, I had to contact the railway to book my bike and myself for my return to Newcastle. I checked my overnight laundry drying system and all seems peachy. Thank goodness for heated towel racks. Socks rolled, folded and stowed. I went with the simple B & B breakfast option of cereals, toast and yogurt, and the B & B owner (upon her return from shopping), provided a few sweet buns for the road. I returned to my room to call CrossCountry Rail to confirm if my bike booking request had been approved and was advised there were no bike spaces available for my preferred ... read more

My wake up call this morning wasn't the buzz of my alarm, or the peal of the church bells. This mornings wake up was the rapid clop of hooves, and ring of steel rims on pavement, as a horse and cart galloped through town at 5:30am. Anticipating another day of the short and steep, I was a little less than bubbly in my morning preparation. Panniers packed and bike loaded, I was out the door. Newquay, my destination was 100 km off, and slow climbs were to be anticipated. As it was Sunday, the Inn owner had advised that restuarants along the way would most likely be closed and had prepared four sandwiches for me the night before (@ £2 per). Sandwiches to be left outside my room door. Upon my return from a village saunter, ... read more

It’s Thursday 27thJuly and I am writing this first blog entry during a flight from London to Copenhagen. We left Oz about four weeks ago. After just one overnight stop in London, where we had dinner with my sisters and Ken, we hired a car the next day and drove to Cornwall via Guildford where we spent an evening with Michael and his girlfriend Amy. We arrived at our Cornish cottage at Polruan after a long 5 hour drive the next day. You can imagine how exhausted Joyce and I were after all that travelling and still suffering from jet lag. After landing in London on the Thursday we were at our rented cottage Saturday evening. We were blown away at how pretty the village was and the location with great views from our cottage. I ... read more

Cornwall, the most southern and tropical part of the UK and also one of the most remote parts. Day 1. So our journey begins... at 2:30am to travel the predicted 6 hours to Marazion, Cornwall’s oldest Town. I've got the car packed, its down on its wheel arches and a super strength coffee to go! The drive from Shoreham By Sea was pretty uneventful with not a soul on the roads until we got past Bodmin which goes on forever, to our surprise there is a dual carriageway that goes all the way into Cornwall that opened last Friday. This motorway knocked two hours off our predicted time and we got to Cornwall in under 4 and a 1/2 hours, good going! We took the time to have a drive around Marazion and Penzance to hunt ... read more

Thursday 8 June we arrived in Newquay, a town on the west coast of England, and once again relied on the Sat/Nav to get us to our B&B in the middle of town where parking is at a premium...our host has two witches hats ready and waiting in the laneway marking our parking spot! The weather wasn't too good but it was heartening to see surfers hoping to catch a wave...they could still be waiting! Friday morning we drove to Land's End, famous for its unique location and stunning scenery. Land's End is mainland Britain’s most south-westerly point and one of the country’s most famous landmarks. From the 200 foot high granite cliffs that rise out of the Atlantic Ocean you can gaze across to the Longships Lighthouse, the Isles of Scilly twenty eight miles away ... read more

Apologises for the delay in posting this, but the site in Tavistock had minimal phone signal, depending on the clouds/ position of the moon/ temperature of the toilet block etc, etc... The couple of days in the New Forest have been good. The site was very quiet, with only me in this part, until the new people got here Friday, but they’ve parked at the other end anyway (friendly bunch lol). The only visitors I’ve had, have been the wild life, from foxes to deer, and then cows and horses as you’d expect from the new forest. There has also been a persistent Robin who keeps landing on my step, but he’s always out of luck as I don’t have any food to give him. Suppose I better do the British thing and talk weather. It ... read more

Day 4 Continued: Penzance His side – So after our fantastic hike through a gorge, and looking at ruins in Okehampton we we’re off to the next part in our journey. Moving from Devon to Cornwall. This is something I had been looking forward to immensely; I had many idealised notions in my head, driving around the countryside, having cider in little pubs and eating Cornish pasties. On the way to our next stop, we had decided to go to this place called the Eden Project (Georgia has the link below). This is an amazing place we’re they converted an old clay pit and converted it to an eco-domed garden wonderland. What I will say is, don’t do a 3-hour hike, and then drive two hours, and then do the Eden Project. Seriously, you need at ... read more

Today is a very special day for a number of reasons. Firstly I have reached another milestone. Another birthday. Another year older. Something I am trying quite hard to forget. Secondly it is our wedding anniversary - part of the reason for this trip. Thirdly it was St Davids Day the patron saint of my home country. So what were we going to do today to celebrate all of these things. I had brought my cards down with me together with a celebratory bottle of wine. The cards from our wedding anniversary too were in the bag. St David was being celebrated by the many daffodils opening along the hedgerows and in the gardens of Cornwall. The weather yet again was inclement. The rain poured and if it did not pour it drizzled. Mizzled is a ... read more
