Wonderful Newquay on the north coast of Cornwallis well-known for being a paradise for surfers. And it is that, not so much for any geographical or natural advantages specifically, but more due to it’s size and location. With 20,000 people living in Newquay, it is the largest town that sits right on the Cornish north coast with it's abundance of amazing surf spots from Sennen Beach to Bude. Due to it’s size, Newquay has a larger community of surfers and a more varied water sports offering than most other Cornish towns and villages, making it a wonderful hub for surfing visitors and tourists. But because Newquay is such a surfer’s paradise, it is often overlooked by families.. not our little family, of course, because we went to Newquay in April 2015 and had the most couple ... read more

Over Easter my family and I spent four days in wonderful Cornwall. The whole family, which includes my husband, our two 6-year-old children and me, had a blast in Polperro. There's something for everyone, every age and every type of traveller. When you arrive in Polperro, it's almost like stepping back in time.. in the best possible way! Polperro is an old fishing village on the Cornish south coast and only a few miles from the larger town of Looe. The centre of the village feels unspoilt and authentic, full of beautiful cottages around a small harbor, a couple of loca... read more

This time next week we will be heading up to Heathrow before flying to Washington on Monday for our holiday of a lifetime. Wifi access permitting I shall try and use this to keep a record of our travels. As a first time blogger I'm not promising anything too exciting but was persuaded by a friend to give it a go so it's almost rude not to!! Just as an experiment in using this site I've started off with the playlist on my i pod which will be accompanying our travels. A mixture of obvious cheese alongside some of our personal favourites from across the past 27 years I'm hoping it will keep us entertained..... The last night prior to our travels is upon us. When I refer to us I'm mean the 3 of us. Caroline, myself and our van. We always name our motorhomes and our latest is no exception. Ella and Lola are particularly good in this regard and duly named him 'Monty'. Previous vans were girls, we had Daisy first than Wanda. We have been some time in the planning phase and now with just hours to go we are very ready and excited. What do you pack? Interesting as we have a European winter and summer to cater for. The short answer is "Loads"! Monty is relatively small at 6.1m but we have maximised our storage with a bike rack and a rear storage box. Over the duration of our travels I hope to surprise a ... read more

A cheeky week in Cornwall long after the summer holidays actually worked out well. Nice quiet holiday let with pool onsite and a short walk to the beach. No hordes of tourists, and inspite of the time of year we had great weather ! So good that we went swimming in the sea! Lots of fun had by all and a great reminder of how amazing Cornwall is, and also how close it is too!... read more

After meeting up with Dave and Merry Jo D MJ Binkley in D.C. earlier this year, they both inspired me to write blogs on my own homeland. So I have decided to write this blog on Cornwall as it's one of my favourite parts of the United Kingdom, and one of my closest friends lives down there, who I have known practically my whole life, so I try to visit Cornwall at least once a year. The reason I don't visit too often is because the drive to Cornwall from my home is about four hours. But the four hour drive is definitely worth it! Cornwall is a county that is mainly surrounded by sea as its the foot part of the United Kingdom. Cornwall was part of the territory of the tribe known as Dummonii. ... read more

A sudden drenching downpour of rain had me diving for cover in the lee of 2 large outcrops tucked in below a towering rock wall, grey and dripping wet from the low cloud scudding across the peak. From my relatively sheltered position, I looked back across the moor toward the shattered summit of Trewortha Tor – only just visible in the almost horizontal rain driving in off the Atlantic out to the north west. I was on the tallest of the 3 peaks that made up Twelve Men’s Moor on the eastern edge of Cornwall’s wild, Bodmin Moor. Not surprisingly, I had it all to myself but even on a good day, I very rarely encountered anyone on walks across the moor, the odd fellow hiker perhaps or a group of marines on exercises - dressed ... read more

11thAugust Falmouth to Fowey – 23nm. A cold but fast trip as we had the tide with us. Didn't leave Falmouth till after 1pm to have the tide. Spring tides, so strong currents and can't get it wrong or it will be against you the whole way!! So tide with us we were doing 6 -7kts most of the way! Were running wing and wing for most of the way until we turned up the coast to head into Fowey. Phil was out in the cockpit and I was at the nav station. Suddenly we heard a noise and Phil yelled out...The Dinghy’s gone!!. Quickly we started the motor, furled the heady and centred the main. Then turned to boat around to get the abandoned Zodi!! Took a few times to get it as the swell ... read more

4thAugust Helford river to Falmouth today – 7nm. No wind, and what there was came right on the nose, so didn't even bother tacking back and forth like some other yachts did, just pointed right for Falmouth and motored in. No mucking around...just get there!! Came to the Falmouth Yacht Haven and there was a spot right against the pontoon for us – Yay, no rafting up. Nice and secure. Went to the Chain-locker for dinner. Pub very close by and had 2 courses for 10pound each!! **Not much really happened in Falmouth, loved window shopping in all the little shops (so many of them) found a Caribbean food cafe and had the best Roti since Tobago. Really didn't hold much hope for it – a roti in the UK, but sure enough, it was fantastic. ... read more
