Mark had checked the bus timetable for Lost Gardens of Heligan. We were going to catch the 10:45 bus from South Street. Several buses turned up around 10:45, but after a few minutes Mark had realised that we had misses the bus. That bus didn’t show the destination and the number. However, he didn’t want to change the plan; he decided to go to Lost Gardens of Heligan by taxi. The taxi took more direct routes towards the destination than the bus: we arrived there at 11:30. Mark showed printed combined tickets (with Eden Project) at the reception. We started exploring the Northern Gardens. We both remembered Flora’s Green, Northern Summerhouse, Kitchen Gardens, Italian Garden, Pineapple Pit, etc and a series of pictures to show how the Victorian gardens were discovered in 1990 and how the ... read more

We had lovely memories in Cornwall – visiting Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan, walking on the picturesque coastlines – and we decided to stay in St Austell between 21st and 28thMay. Mark was very well-organised – he had booked the train and the B&B hotel, and checked the bus timetables. Arrival at St Austell Upon arrival at St Austell, we found the tourist information in the station and picked up maps and information leaflets. It was raining, so we decided to take a taxi to our hotel, Penwinnick Hotel. The hotel owner, Tim, welcomed us and showed us our room, dining room and drawing room. Our room was facing to the garden and next to the dining room. While resting ourselves at our room, we were reading through the maps and the information leaflets. ... read more

What would become the normal 5:30 start of breakfast, changing, packing, dropping the bag off and being ready to start by 7:00 was unique on the first day. The ride started OK, the first climb of the day and the descent into Penzance and the view of St Michael’s Mount lifted the spirits. However this soon descended into a world of hurt. I weigh 92KG and the laws of physics dictate that the greater the mass and the steeper the gradient the more force is needed. One of the facts of cycling is that when you go into ‘the red’, that’s over your lactate threshold you will eventually stop with cramps. Throw in hot weather, dehydration, relentless climbs, technical descents and no flats to recover, the day was a complete lesson in suffering but I made ... read more

I find myself sat in front of the computer trying to write a blog about one of the most amazing experiences and challenges in my life, something I have spent 2 years thinking about and 12 months training for. That might sound easy but trying to describe the emotional drain and the mental strain that the Ride Across Britain causes the human soul is difficult to describe, but I will do my best: I hope you all enjoy the read. First for those of you that don’t know, the Ride Across Britain is a cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats, Britain’s most south western point to the most north eastern. The traditional route is 875 miles but the RAB as we call the event is 967, or as a friend described it the Hard ... read more

Cornwall . I often revisit my old blogs on travel destinations to relive my trips. Blog or no , Some trips remain etched in the memory for eons while some quietly fade away. Cornwall ,undoubtedly , belongs to the former category . Needless to say , this is not a routine travel blog , and hence does NOT cover all the ‘must-visit’ places in that region. I have jotted down my own viewings and experiences here Hope you find it purposive. Cornwall , is a breathtaking area near the coast line in the far west of England . If you are driving from London , then it’s a good 6 hours drive . It’s a peninsula like India and Italy . It is an interesting place to visit for a short holiday ( from a weekend ... read more

This last portion of our Scotland/England trip consisted of a five-day guided tour to Devon and Cornwall with Rabbie's Tours. There are twelve of us on the minibus, from the USA, Martinique, Hong Kong, and Italy. My interest in seeing this part of England was sparked by the novels of Rosamund Pilcher and by the beautiful scenery on the TV show Doc Martin, filmed in Port Isaac, Cornwall. It is a part of England known for very mild climate and charming seaside villages. First project: getting out of London. On a Saturday morning the streets of London itself were quite deserted, but once we hit the major artery heading southwest, it was clear that many other vacationers thought it was a good time to head for the beaches, so we sat in traffic quite a bit, ... read more

Got up pretty early, but some mishaps with our card made it impossible to get pounds from the ATM. Interject: PEOPLE MAKE SURE YOUR CARD HAS THE CHIP! JUST MAKE SURE IT HAS THE CHIP! life will be so much easier for you across the pond. So we wasted a good deal of our morning trying to get that fixed. The rest of the morning was spent in the charity shops (thrift shops), which were plentiful in Lewes, but there wasn't a lot of variety, getting some gear for Glastonbury. After getting everything squared away, we made our way to Brighton to get camping stuff (bed, sleeping bags, wellies) and to wash our clothes. This is also where we discovered Sainsbury's : There was no laundromat in Lewes and because we couldn't get any pounds we ... read more

This morning we drove around Mount's Bay through Penzance to the small fishing village of Mousehole. It was pretty cool again today so we needed to put our coats on before wandering around the village. I put my coat on and Bernie pointed out something grotty on the front of my coat. Hmmn, looks like bird poo which I think I must have picked up when I leant against the sea wall in Marazion last night? Fortunately we had some antiseptic wipes to clean my coat with. We walked around to Mousehole's harbour where we stood looking at the boats bobbing on the water ... and the intrepid English holidayers sitting on the beach in their wooly jumpers and swimming in wet suits. Before we could head down the steps to the beach, Stephen flew overhead ... read more

This morning we set off down to Cornwall, specifically to St Michael's Mount which is linked to the mainland at Marazion by a causeway at low tide. When the tide is in visitors are taken across to the island by boat. We visited St Michael's Mount on our first trip to the UK in 1993 although I should say - attempted to visit - because when we arrived the rain and fog was so bad that we could barely see the mount. In the end we thought that it was just too miserable to be bothered going across to St Michael's Mount and we decided that we would just have to come back another time to make the trip across to visit the castle and gardens. But, I'm getting ahead of myself - first we set ... read more

So my blog today starts in Bristol, North West of London and about an hour and a half train ride away from Wokingham, our last stopover. Drama after drama with The Wizz meant the purchase of our darling camper was delayed another 4 days. There really was no point in delaying the holiday though so off we went without her! Bristol city centre is nothing special to write home about, it's a little run down looking and not as much history as some other towns we have since visited. A little further out the suburb, Clifton, phooo! Much nice! The grass is definitely greener over there, it's beautiful and placed high on the cliff of the river that runs under their famous suspension bridge and through to the Bristol city centre. The suspension bridge didn't sound ... read more
