31st July Penzance to Helford River. Left Penzance at 0815 when the lock was open and had the tide with us for quite some time, good as we only had light winds. Then as we turned around the bottom of Lizard point...it all turned against us. We were in very choppy water where the two currents met I guess and sometimes we were only doing 1.5kts. The further round the point we got, the less the current was against us. Finally arrived in Helford River about 4pm. Anchored up, so no mooring fees. Very lovely river, didn't go ashore, but stayed on board to ensure anchor was set properly. A big old sailing boat came in – South Star and two guys from that came across in their dinghy to say hi. We had been watching ... read more

Over the week I have discovered that most Cornish bays share many similarities with their neighbouring brothers and sisters .Stone and white-washed cottages lead down to a little harbour or beach. However each bay has its own unique feel, which makes visiting these picturesque seaside towns quite addictive, even for a teenager! Similar but with an enchanting distinctness, each one holds a different character- Fowey was no exception. When we arrived in the car park at the top of the hill, a sign informed us Fowey was pronounced 'Foy' to rhyme with 'joy'- we had been saved from another humiliating pronunciation realisation! As we walked down the hill, into the town, it was obvious that the feeling of joy was embedded into this little gem! Delis selling more cheeses than I had even heard of, ice ... read more

16thJuly Departed Scilly Isles 0740. Phil had fun as he usually does pulling up the anchor, but this time it was more behaved. A nice sail across to Penzance, fairly light winds but we managed to sail all the way. Saw a couple of dolphins. We were too early for the lock opening, so we took up a mooring just outside. Boomerang boys were dropped off to our boat after they'd had an explore on land, so we had a video and dinner with them before the lock opened and we went into the 'inner harbour'. We are rafted up to other boats...four in fact and we're on the end. We have to climb across all four to then climb up a dodgy looking ladder to get ashore. However, we're only paying 15pound a night and ... read more

Had a great weekend staying with Ant and Tamsyn. Saturday Tam took us to Looe and we had fish and chips cooked by Grace herself and then went to Fowey to check out where we might moor the boat for a while. Sunday we Phoned up to see if we could make impromptu visits with other rellies and managed to catch up with Lizzy and ????? and their 10 day old baby boy Archie. Donna popped in too for a bit and then we were on our way to see Brian. While we were there Ann popped in, so we did end up catching up with quite a few. Dinner sunday night was with Lindsay, Non, Grace and Tamsyn. Ant had gone up to the Welsh Royal Show for his Stag weekend. A great weekend catching ... read more

On the second day of our holiday we were itching to get outside after our long car journey the day before. The sun with its omniscient power, must have know it was the first day of our holiday: It's warmth gradually increased, burning the clouds as it rose through the sky. We decided to take a circular walk we found in the very informative brochure in our villa. We set off: Through woodland and stream we walked, hoping to wear Elmo (our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) out - we had discovered this to be nearly impossible over the last two years. The stream sparkled, thanking the sun for its summer rays. As we walked our stiff post journey legs, mum stopping every second to take a picture, we came to a sign after about a mile ... read more

We arrived at eight at Natural Retreats, St Austell - a group of beach hut come Swedish lodge looking villas. Our vision may have been rose-tinted after our very long journey from York but when we went inside our admiring thoughts were confirmed by a beautifully decorated spacious modern villa. Although it had a contemporary feel, locally painted pictures of the surrounding area gave it a unique coastal feel. The bedrooms were huge with a wardrobe so big it could easily host the quite extensive amount of clothes I needlessly brought; each had an en-suite bathroom. My room had an enormous bath that could have fitted at least three people in - we were truly spoilt with space. Elmo, the dog, retreated at once to the decking, whilst we unpacked far too much stuff in which ... read more

Saying ´goodbye´to my family and friends was a whole lot more emotional than I thought it would be, and I cried so much more than I thought I would! Especially at the station when I first boarded my train that would take me out into the big wide world, I turned back to look at the station and saw my family lined up to wish me off and the reality of what I was doing hit me, so I set off on my adventure feeling more scared and nervous than I had ever felt in my whole life. I arrived at Heathrow and waltzed through security with only one small hiccup (sorry Cathy but I had to have my hand luggage emptied because of the liquid quantity and unfortunately the really nice perfume you brought me ... read more

I am absolutely exhausted, but today, our second consecutive annual trip to St. Michael's Mount was completely worth it! I'd recommend it to anyone, so have decided to post a bit about my adventures there, but any advice and information to those who want to visit! History Not only does the small tidal island off the coast of Cornwall have some beautiful panoramic views, but also boasts an interesting history. It's the perfect family day out and has something for everyone. As the http://www.cornwall-online.co.uk/heritage-trail/heritage-national-trust/stmichaelsmount/Welcome.asp states, the mount has been involved in major historical events in English history, from the War of the Roses to the English Civil War, primarily down to its useful geographic position. For a history student like myself, it's a really interesting place to visit, and the architecture alone ... read more

The hussle and bussle of city life is completely non-existent here in the fishing village of Cadgwith; no supermarkets, no streetlights, and barely any phone signal. This small and beautiful village is purely based upon local produce, and that's how the community like it. The Cadgwith Fish Seller makes the most of the natural resources in a part of Britain well known for its quality and quantity of fish. Seagulls dominate the wildlife and the leftover crabs legs and various lobster pots in the dock portray the typical stunning seaside village. According to the locals, some may be lucky enough to witness some Basking Sharks and dolphins! In the village shop The Crow's Nest Art Gallery, next to the fishmongers, I met a lovely lady who explained how the products are all locally made, ... read more
