In an hour, we will be packing the taxi and heading off for the airport! Hopefully, all of our stuff will fit and none of us will need to walk to the airport! The cases have been packed and re-packed. All the weights have been checked and now we are filling the time! Some of us are doing the things we all do before a holiday! Have you got the passports? Who has the money? Did we pack ...? Is .. easy to get to! Suzy has disappeared to the allotment to pass some time and I have turned to the blog - after Rob pointed out that the original had a spelling mistake! Tim is juggling in the dining room with 18 suitcases and 6 rucksacks! Rob is pruning a bush after cutting the lawn! ... read more

The place is essentially a large greenhouse divided into two sections with a large café/gift shop area attached to it. When you enter you come in from the car park and into an entrance hallway which is the “Human Impact Area” which has a few signs and exhibits (though no animals) showing the impact of humans on the rainforest. You buy a ticket here and can then enter into the greenhouse bit. This is the “Lowland Forest area” and is the smaller part of the zoo. you can see this scale from the map and it is separate from “Amazonica” by a door with the type of plastic flaps often used to contain free-flying birds or butterflies. I really don’t see why they have separated this to be honest, the “Amazonica” section does not exclusively contain ... read more

Geo: 50.8993, -1.18827Although I had been planning and researching for this trip over the winter we took the plunge and booked a one-way ferry, insurance, euros, pre-ferry site and first two on the other side just last Thursday. A busy few days followed and we pulled off the drive after lunch on Tuesday with all the usual panics about things left undone or possibly not packed haunting me en-route but these things disappeared as we checked into the oasis that is the peaceful, wooded Caravan Club site - Rookesbury Park, near Wickham. We have stayed here before as not only is it near to Portsmouth for ferries (15 minutes on a good day) but our daughter and husband live nearby too. This has worked to their advantage since I have prepared meals for them as they came ... read more

So, with the car hire now booked, we are finally ready to go! All we need to do now is survive the next four months before getting a break from working! Got to love bookings.com. Made it sooo easy to sort out accomodation. We've found what look like some pretty decent places to stay (some apartments, some basic B&Bs and some more flash looking hotels). We've planned as follows, although God knows it will probably change again... 4th July - fly from Heathrow to Salzberg. Spend a few hours pootling round and eating lunch, before catching the train to Zagreb. The journey is about 7 hours long and is meant to have amazing scenery to take in along the way. Book into Zig Zag Apartments on arriving (we think about 9.30pm) 5th July - explore Zagreb. ... read more

Nick: So, after 18 months or so of planning, the day we finally packed up our things and left our beloved little home had finally arrived. We had already had a week off work to sort the of house out and stow away ours things before handing over the keys to our new tenant Andy, and all that was left today was to tie up some loose ends, finish the cleaning and pack our bags, but the adventure wasn't due to start in earnest just yet - our flights to Rio were not until the following day. Instead, we had the chance to have one more evening with our friends (and family) Simon and Hayley, who were kindly putting us up for the last night before we left. A very enjoyable evening was had by all, ... read more

My bags are just about packed, term has finished, I've had an amazing leaving do with wonderful people, the rest of my things are in storage (my poor Granddad probably has more of my belongings at his house than his own at the moment-thanks Granddad), I have a pile of paperwork stamped, signed and organised and am ready to set off tomorrow to spend the next year in Vietnam. Should probably be nervous but am just incredibly excited!... read more

Day 27 - Who needs a map? After breakfast and checking out of our hotel we headed west to Ruislip, a community that Tony found that is within easy travel to the offices in London. Unfortunately we found out that Anne's Phone stopped receiving Data some time in the last few days and the map didn't work anymore. We had to navigate the old fashioned way, using road signs. Tony's good memory and Anne's sharp eye got us in the right direction and we found Ruislip without too much difficulty. It's a nice town with some interesting areas, definitely a possibility. Next it was on to Reading for lunch very Kindly hosted by Ben and Katie. Tony had worked with Ben last time he was in Windsor. They have two children Michelle's age that are just ... read more

Day 3 - Exploring Windsor We did't make it through the night. We were all up for about 3 hours around 2 AM and then slept in until 9:30. After breakfast at the Chocolate Cafe we headed to Windsor Castle to watch the changing of the guard. A group of the Guard march through Windsor from their barracks to the castle where there is a guard changing ceremony. We watched from the street and then got tickets to tour the castle and grounds. The castle is huge and only a few parts are accessible on the tour. It still took us 3 hours to see everything we wanted to see. Two of the highlights are Queen Mary's dollhouse and the special papers collection. The dollhouse was designed as a showcase of the Queen's collection of miniatures ... read more

Day 1 and 2 - Don't Go to Sleep We set off for England Tuesday afternoon. The trip took over 14 hours between the flight from SLO to Los Angeles and Los Angeles to London and then from the airport to Windsor. Michelle enjoyed the variety of in-flight movies. By the time we reached the hotel, it was 2PM, local time on Wednesday. We are staying at the Christopher Wren Hotel in Windsor, right on the Thames. Our room even looks out over the river. We checked in and tried to avoid sleeping until a reasonable time. Looking for something to eat, we stopped at the cafe across the street. The Chocolate Theater Cafe has over 25 different types of hot chocolate, including the American hot chocolate (with marshmallows), the penultimate hot chocolate, the ultimate hot ... read more

All packed and ready to go. Me (TP) and Welshy just brushing our teeth before our last sleep in the UK for more than 3 months. Our flight is nice and early tomorrow morning so we shall be meeting the boys at the crack of dawn at Heathrow. I don't think it has quite set in yet that in 36 hours time we shall be taking our first steps in the South American continent however every now and then a rush of excitement hits me. Santiago, Chile is our first stop where according to the weather guide we should be expecting low temperatures - around 10oC - and rain. It appears that after travelling halfway round the world the better weather may for once be back home! Not much has been planned for Chile yet but ... read more
