I took a different way into the city today - go figure there was some demonstration so my tram was detoured and of course all the announcements were only in German. I followed my GPS dot on Google Maps and hoped for the best lol. Thankfully the detour ended two stops before my stop. I love taking trams, btw. It gives you a more intimate view of the city - little neighborhoods, people getting their groceries, kids dribbling ice cream everywhere, all that good stuff lol. Anyway, I ventured out on my boat cruise today - stifling hot in the sun, so it was gorgeous on the water and the breeze did absolute wonders. I made sure to sit in the shade - it's the first time I've been chilly all week! I was so content ... read more

You know what's a weird little travel thing I love? Sitting on the train platform when the high speed trains go by - I love the gust of wind, I love the sound (whistle mixed with a slight clickity-clack). Anyway, short one today. I didn't "plan" today I simply went into the city to wander around for a bit. I overheard some people talking about the "Festival" yesterday so I'm like k cool, day planned lol. I got off at the main station and just wandered down towards the waterfront and sure enough - Festival! Turns out it's a big deal - like it only happens once every 3 years for 2 days kind of big deal. Basically the entire core is shut down with rides, food stalls, music stages, and games. There were also dragon ... read more

Yesterday was a bit of a travel adventure. I'll explain at the bottom - but first today! Today I went full guns a blazin' - Rhine Falls and Uetliberg mountain. Rhine Falls are continental Europe's largest... I'll admit the pictures beforehand made them look dinky, but even though they are short they are POWERFUL. I will forever love the roar of a good waterfall - it's so soothing yet mighty. The mist didn't hurt either, with this heat. The viewing platform pretty much puts you inside the fall, you're that close. It's amazing. I listened and just soaked it all in for about an hour before a giant gaggle of tourists showed up and the vibe died lol. Back to the city I go. I've quickly learned the chocolate shops in the touristy areas often give ... read more

We get up and walk to the station. We’re going to visit Zurich, which is 10 miles to the north. I purchase 3 return tickets which are so expensive I wonder briefly if I’ve accidentally bought the train. The nice lady in the ticket office explains that she’s giving us tickets to Uetliberg because they’re the same price as Zurich and Uetliberg is a nice place to visit in the mountains. We spend the morning in Zurich, walking along the river to the Fraumünster and over the bridge to the Grossmünster churches then visit the Kunsthaus. It’s a really good art gallery with lots of works by artists the old man has heard of. The rest of my family are philistines; while I wander round enjoying the art, they sit on a bench checking their social ... read more

Renata and I left Thursday night on our way to South Africa. We had an 11 hour stopover in Zurich before we had to continue onto our flight to Durban, South Africa. So we thought why not explore Zurich in the meantime. Getting from the airport to Zurich was easy. We just had to take the train from the Airport station Zurich Flughafen to the main station Zurich Hauptbahnhof. Bahnhofstrasse Street After we arrived in downtown Zurich, we walked down the famous Bahnhofstrasse street. Bahnhofstrasse is Zurich's main downtown streets known for being one of the world's most expensive and exclusive shopping areas. At the end of the street you hit Burliplatz where there is a weekly market on Friday from 5-11am. It was interesting to check out the European market and see the flowers and ... read more

After a minimal breakfast, we headed towards the Tourist Information Office in the Hauptbahnhof railway station to see about a day pass for transport. When we told the lady there that we wanted to take the trian to the Uetliberg scenic overlook, take a short lake cruise, and ride the trams around town some, she was kind enough to explain the system and recommend a day transport pass for 17 CHFs that would cover all that at no additional cost. We bought the two passes and soon found the platform for the S10 train to Uetliberg and were on our way. The train passes underground a bit, then starts heading out of town and soon uphill. Half way there, when we stopped at a stop, about 10 or 12 little kids, like 5 or 6 years ... read more

We packed up, had our normal hostel breakfast, and hit the road again, this time heading to Zurich, Switzerland. This time not only did we not have many tunnels, and no long ones, but about half the trip we beside the beautiful Lake Zurich. My wife was trying to take photos every few minutes! As usual, the roads were good and there was little traffic, so we arrived in Zurich by a little after 10am. Unlike the last two times, we had no problems with the route the car's navigation system came up with, but this time the hostel was on a back street with no apparent parking nearby. We ended up going back across the bridge to a place we'd passed with metered parking and a few open spots. We pulled into one, put 3 ... read more

This morning i was up early to shower, pack and eat some breakfast as Tonz and I are going to pick up Vince & Alison at 9:15am. Before I left, Nina came upstairs with Evi to say goodbye and then I went downstairs to say goodbye to Muma & Pupa. Always sad to say goodbye but hopefully I will see them all agIan in the not too distant future. Our plan today is to pick up a hire car from Köln airport for a road trip to Switzerland! We picked Vince & Alison up pretty much on time and got to the airport around 10am. Tonz dropped us off and we all said farewell. We are all so grateful for everything he did for us. Truly a fabulous host. After a bit of confusion on where ... read more

Zurich our last stop on this adventure. We are back in the German speaking part of Switzerland so we now say hallo (hello) and danke (thank you). You feel like you have visited different countries with the multiple languages in Switzerland. We check into Hotel Alph then Christopher and I return our rental car at the airport. We don't need a car in Zurich. We take the train from the airport to Central Station, no stops and we walk about four blocks to our hotel. We walk around and we see hundreds of mostly young people swimming, playing volleybal, skate boardping, relaxing and dancping along the canal. Christopher and Brad decide to join them. They jump off a bridge then float and swim to a climb out spot. There are bars and DJ's playing music along ... read more
