Hey everyone, Tonight is our third night in Barcelona, and we are really enjoying ourselves. It has been super hot here (28ºC) and 90% humidity everyday. We spent yesterday on the beach, enjoying the weather. We walked around the city last night (the Rolling Stones played last night so the city was busy all night). After being lost for a while we came home and just crashed. We are living in a college dorm near the University of Barcelona, where the people have been great, though we are definitely in close quarters. Today we went back down to the boardwalk area and found a fresh produce market. The fruit here is amazing, we had papaya, watermelon, strawberries, everything was fresh and tasted great. We saw lots of different kinds of street performers on the main street, ... read more

Mountain bound again, Same stuff for all the comp pilots. Got my first job in Spain, we started to pick up the pilots that had landed away from the main gaggle. to take them back to town, they promptly got in the van and took there shirts off Pay not good, but the perks seem to be great. Later that evening one of the cafes put on a party great fun, Spanish band in the open air, we were rocking until 11.30pm, a lot of locals came out to enjoy as well. ... read more

Another day another 30th. This weekend my brother's girlfriend turned 30 and we celebrated in Barcelona. We all had a lovely time, including a delicious dinner at a 'typico' Spanish restaurant in the Old Town. Adam also arranged for hundreds of balloons (possibly a slight exaggeration, but it sure felt like a lot to those of us co-opted to blow them up) and champagne in our apartment as a pre-dinner treat (awwww, he is a new age man after all!). Actually, we had great food the whole time we were in Barcelona - how can you go wrong with tapas and sangria? Barcelona is home to my favourite church in Europe - The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia. The church was started by Gaudi, who kept most of the plans in his head. Unfortunately ... read more

“What do you mean the rate isn’t available?” I fumed. The balding Spanish man standing behind the desk had just informed us that the reservation I placed on Hertz.com a month earlier couldn’t be processed. “I have a confirmed reservation for 2,464 Euro from June 21 to October 10!” I assured him. “Do you have a print of the reservation?” he inquired through unpracticed English. “No, but I can show you on Hertz.com. Do you have Internet access?” The accelerating pace of my counterattack must have confused him. “Internet?” “Yes, if you have an Internet connection I can login to my Hertz account and show you the confirmed reservation,” I reiterated, while clearly annunciating each word. “No Internet. You call and make a new reservation with an available rate,” the man countered with a grin. Ready ... read more

So getting to Barcelona was a problem. The French train union had been striking, and the morning we arrived at the Nice train station for a train to Barcelona, they told us the Nice train station was on strike. Fortunately, that means ALMOST all trains... but not all. So we found a train to Marseille, which took us to Montpellier, which took us to Barcelona. Needless to say, it was a long ride. Barcelona is craaazzzyyy. I swear the clubs don´t get busy until like 2 or 3, and throughout the night and into the morning you can hear people outside. It´s fun when you´re out, but if you´re trying to sleep it can be annoying. Fortunately, we were usually out late and when we weren´t apparantley me and kev can sleep through most things ... read more

Try finding a suitable dress for oneself when heavily (almost 8 months pregnant) for a black tie event!! Now factor in a 2 1/2 year old that has just woken from his daily nap (at 3pm) to be told that mamma has to go shopping for a dress and needs him to be patient while she looks......do you smell trouble?? 2 hours was the record time. Not bad considering when comparing times to other short noticed mums. The night kicked off at 930pm, red carpet entry (of course) very funny... read more

Day 3 in Tenerife. There's about 13 volunteers here now, so we work on a rotation, about 8 people out on the boats and 5 at the house/research room. Sadly, today is not a boat day for me, so I'm at the computer researching sea turtles. Yesterday was the first day that everyone was here, so we did an all day training and information day to find out about what we would be doing and what the foundation does. A lot of the work we do when we're not on the boats will be compiling information about endangered species and work that is being done to protect them, as well as coming up with educational material for tourists. Ed, our boss, is very dedicated to his work and is starting to send teams all over the ... read more

I decided that it would be great to see the frenzy of Take off this morning so we made our own way up the mountain. What a great site, the abundance of colour spread across the take off, all different shades and sizes of gliders being laid out ready for the starting gate to open (the time the pilots are officially are aloud off the hill and have a time frame of 1 hour to the starting gate which has already been programmed into their GPS somewhere in the heavens) . I looked at the results from yesterday and Matt had come 105th, up there for his first comp well done Nuts. I’ve taken hopefully some great photos to show you which are attached. I’m again taking it easy today, the usual breakfast the same ... read more
