Had breakfast at the hostel, bread and jam, juice and coffee and were out the by 7.30am. The first 3.5 kms were a very steep climb out of the village, up towards Maneru. The path was refreshingly good and the scent of spruce forests pervaded the air and made the walk more pleasant. After Maneru, Cirauqui was next in our sights and after a nice undulating walk, the village appeared ahead. It is a lovely medieval town with narrow streets that had us weaving our way through until we hit the open country and the old roman road ahead. I would like to say strolling along the roman road and crossing the old roman bridge ( are there any new ones?) was a pleasant , almost romantic, step back in time, but that would be a ... read more

Left Zubiri 8:30 this morning after stopping at an incredible pastry /cafe leche' shop in town . We needed it as the day was long with many up hill climbs. One great thing is we have noticed our strength and stamina increasing . The hills are easier but still steep and our trekking lasts longer without a break. Still we are not ready yet for the Himalaya 's ..soon maybe.:) Besides the beautiful scenery we are meeting many very interesting and friendly people from all over the world . Truly encourging. We have arrived in Pamplona exhausted with spirits high. Staying in the old part of town at a comfortable hotel . Going to hold up for a couple days before heading out. ... read more

Have to admit it but I am beginning to realize that there is a tremendous gap between my expectations of what i want to achieve and the blunt reality of achieving them when it comes to reaching Santiago de Compostela by foot. At 9:30 this morning we still had 489.8 miles (790 km) to traverse and 30 days to get it done .At 12:00 noon we have reduced that number to 484.8 mi . Doing the math and now fully realizing my lack of quick Long distance walking capabilities with 25 lbs on my back I've decided to throttle down ( I have a choice?) and enjoy the stroll . Theres still roses to be smelt , sights to be seen and new people to be met . So starting tomorrow we continue on but end ... read more

Today is a bit of a rest and recovery day. I managed to get Wifi at last so I spent some time with emails and this Blog. The Wifi in most places has been poor but this could be due to demand being high. After lunch we walked into town where a festival was happening and it would be an understatement to say the Spanish know how to have fun. Walking through the dense crowded streets, the noise was unbelievable. Groups of musicians, singers, mobile DJ's with dancing crowds following them, all pumped up the atmosphere to 11 out of 10. A few pictures really can't transport you to the joy, the voices, music and aromas of food vendors poised on each corner. The parade consisted of oversized puppets dancing and swirling, again followed by hundreds ... read more

Today we start from Pamplona and walk to Puente La Reina, a total of about 24 kms. We left our accommodation at 7 am in a taxi and were dropped at the point to continue our walk. Not much point walking through an area of suburban Pamplona that we had already traipsed through numerous times, so a taxi was the order of the day. Starting in the dark, the town lights illuminated the path enough to continue walking and we made good progress despite Sue having numerous blisters and I had a developing problem with a toe that became worse during the day. It's a family blog so no photos are shown. More pain than anything from having your feet constantly compressed into the toe of the boots on steep rocky declines. Still, there's plenty of ... read more

Walked with Dana and Renee from Texas, USA, and Doug and Libby from Tasmania today. We started in the dark and walked along a path in a wooded area where tree roots protruded and crisscrossed our path. It soon became obvious headlamps were required to do this safely so we muddled in the dark to correct this problem. A lesson learnt for next time: prepare for every possibility. We walked the few kilometres to the village of Burguete before stopping for breakfast and a coffee. We went to a very nice little bar and were lucky to be some of the first to arrive as it soon filled up and had a pile of backpacks parked outside. Usually the level ground is relatively smooth to walk on, changing to loose rocks and rubble in rain washed ... read more

We rose today a little later and ate breakfast together at 7am. It is ideal outside; a little chilly but clear and sunny. We travelled the short distance to Akarreta, uphill of course but what else. It is a lovely hamlet set on the side of the hill on the way to Zuriain. Set on the River Arga, Zurian is a nice stop for a drink stop or whatever. There is very little there but it was abuzz with fellow travellers, happy and glad to have day one's confidence deep inside them. By the time you arrived there the aches of yesterday were gone, or deadened with painkillers, and everyone had a common bond if not a common language. We still seem to be able to communicate but how I can be confused for an Englishman ... read more

I think the late Chrissie A. was right, there's a fine line between pleasure and pain and I think I crossed into pain today. Nothing much can prepare you for the first stage of the Camino. We had breakfast at the albergue at 6.30am and headed out into the street to begin walking. The night before was an Aussie contingent with Libby and Doug from Tasmania, Connor and Beth from Canberra and Sue and me from Victoria . The walk to Orisson is 8 kms up a steep hill and we were informed it then becomes an easier crisscross sort of walk to the peak. Rubbish ! It was a grind the whole way, over tarred tracks, dirt tracks, and tracks that were covered in rocks. The latter were mainly downhill. We walked through shaded beech ... read more
