Woke up around 7 a.m. to a grey day. The staff at Casa Magica, our alburgue, made sure we had a good breakfast of bread, boiled eggs, coffee and fruit. They are absolutely wonderful hosts and run a fantastic Alburgue - highly recommend it! Phil, Luzia and I travelled together again today - we seem to get on very well. As has been the case everyday so far, our hikes consist of many ups and downs - especially as one enters and leaves towns and villages. The hike into Estella was a wet one as the skies opened. One man we met who was out gathering snails along the road to eat commented that it hasn't rained in over a month! At first, the rain was a welcome relief from the endless sun; however it did ... read more

Sunday we left Seattle and rode the bolt bus to Vancouver BC. We needed a taxi to our hotel. A Prius pulled up and I thought no way are both our bikes are going to fit. I was wrong ( which doesn't happen very often). Our hotel, the Fairmount, was literally at the airport. The terminals were down stairs. Keithly electric, my husbands company paid for the room. When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised to be in the posh Gold club. We stayed one night and had time in the morning to walk around the waterfront in downtown Vancouver. Monday we left Vancouver and flew to Paris where we had a 4 hour lay over before we headed to Barcelona. Arriving in Barcelona we decided to rent a car but the company at the airport ... read more

This is the third ‘episode’ of another of 'our' travel experiences. * The collective ‘episodes’ (this being the third) describe our journey from our arrival in Paris, France (from the 2nd week of May) for a holiday. The third week witnesses our departure from Bayonne and arrival in Pamploma (northern Spain) where we encounter Basque from a Spanish perspective. As noted in previous missives, our journey is largely unplanned - except that we have now decided to focus on the 'Basque' regions of France and Spain. As also noted before - we'll sort of go where the scenery and experiences seem worthwhile. This 'blog' begins the Spanish part of the journey. Eventually, we'll find our way back to Paris to depart back to Oz. If you missed our earlier travelblog 'episodes' for this journey, here are ... read more

Blog for the 20thonwards Inexplicably the night had brought a moist start to the day, with my tent copping the brunt of the dew. Frustrating to say the least, ending up with a wet tent without having any rain. I certainly had a sense of nervous trepidation about the day. Hoping that I could get my bike fixed in good time, and get on the road to Pamplona. There was also the unknown that was the Pyrenees. I was unsure whether I would be able to ride on the only road leading there. I was definitely on edge. After having a quick, and reassuring word with Eb, I made the 5km walk with my broken bike over the border and into Irun. Stopping on the way I treated myself to a few last croissants on French ... read more

Pamplona in Spain 6 and 7 October 2014 Oh the adventures of travelling. From Bordeaux, we could only book the train to Irun (which is a town just south of the Span/France border) and not to San Sebastian, so after the 2 1/2 hour journey to Irun, we caught a local train to San Sebastian. On the train, we met an Australian girl in her 30s and a couple about our age so we stayed together to change trains. As soon as we got to San Sebastian station we said our goodbyes and Tom & I hopped into a taxi to the San Sebastian airport where we were going to pick up our hire-car. While we were driving along in the Taxi, I said to Tom, "we are heading back towards Irun". The taxi driver kept ... read more

Going steady and easy .Left Estella yesterday towards Villamayor de Monjardín where we stayed at the alburgue Nuovo . On the way we passed a monastery that offered up a free dual fountain ..water free on the right and free red wine on the left. Whoa! How cool is THAT! Google " Bodega Irache" if you would like to watch the "wine cam" We were lucky! Our room at alburgue Nuovo looked directly out to a centuries old Cathedral de Santa Andres .It was beautiful but really really loud , the bell rang once for the half hour and on the hour..so at 12 midnight it rang 12 times, sooo no sleep that night but hey beauty has its privileges and the view was absolutely beautiful. I'm writing this from alburgue de fluente in Los Arcos ... read more

Hola!! After a LONG commute from Spokane, WA to Madrid, Spain that was described as pleasant, uneventful, and hitch-less our journey took a quick turn... After arriving in the Madrid airport we made the decision to continue immediately to Pamplona. Hungry, sleep deprived and out-of-sorts we got our tickets for a 6+ hour bus ride after a slight swindling from the ticket sellers. Yes...we've been had more than once since arriving in Spain. The people of Madrid rushed us constantly to make decisions and commit to their "deals"...it wasn't until halfway through our bumpy bus ride when a woman tried to cut in the bathroom line that we, literally, stood our ground. My foot firmly planted in front of the door she tried to shut on us we adamantly refused giving up our bathroom, which we ... read more
